When I registered to Steamgifts, I tried to choose the username Flicker, but it was taken. When I turned 1 year here, I tried to change it again, to no avail... I've always used flicker as a nickname on the internet, but I use coezo when it's taken as an alternative, as explained here (kind of a long text). As you can see, this user has registered 3 years ago, and has been last seen 3 years ago as well, have never done any GA, or won any GA, and has 11 GA entries. So we can safely assume this user is totally inactive.

I've opened a ticket to ask if SG handle inactive users in any way, or if it's possible to claim an inactive user name. At this time, there's no policy to handle that, so I'm making a suggestion.

If a user has been inactive for a period of time (1 year?), and their name is claimed by another user, they would have their name changed to their Steam user ID. In the case of numbers only, letter "u" (user) + their ID (e.g. u123456789). That is so the records (GAs, wins, entries, posts etc) wouldn't be screwed up.

Maybe it's extra work for support, and it can open up the possibility of abuse attempt... Maybe it can be a hidden thing (with no "button" to request it), and it'll be granted based on a case-to-case analysis (like my case here). :P

Anyway, people, feel free to improve the suggestion if you want. :)

PS: On a side note, while searching the forums, I found this topic, and decided to start the process myself, adding the user as well, but not sure if he'll accept me or be willing to help me with this. :P

I'll be adding other solid contributions to the suggestion here:

I can completely understand wanting this and I can only see this being something that can be applied to people that have not given, traded, or won any games on steam gifts at all. In addition, these people would also have to have been non-active on both steam gifts and steam for an extended period of time; maybe one year to two years.

P.S. Given his steam name is also Flicker I find it unlikely he will give it up even if asked.

I think an empty account on steamgifts for more than 6 months would be enough to allow name "stealing".

Pretty much guarantees the user forgot about it.

I don't know. You already can change your name here once a year, regardless of those things.

And why do you think being inactive on Steam is important for this? Not every Steam user uses or cares about SG.

I'm not talking about you just wanting to change your own name I am talking about forcing another steam gifts user to change or delete their steam gifts account. Not being active on both steam and steam gifts with little to no use of their account assures that any change to their account after a set time to be justified.

Yes, I know. But I don't see the need to consider Steam activity if the steamgifts account has not at all been used for half a year.

Ok, I got the first part. But the second part, I understand what tou mean, but I don't understand what inactivity on Steam has anything to do with this issue. I can stop using SG completely and never come back without stop using Steam. Why do you think Steam activity is important regarding that matter?

Because steam gifts and steam go hand in hand if someone is not using both for an extended time then the account should be able to get changed without needing approval of the actual user. However, if the user is still active on steam then they should have the right to come back to steam gifts and have their account with the exception of maybe a three to four year time frame of it being unused.

oh, I don't propose their account is terminated. Just that their username is changed to release what they're not using. If and when they come back, their account would be still up with all the information. Just their name would be different. But, as I said, you can create your account here and never ever come back and still use Steam daily. In this sense, one thing is not related to the other.

Would really appreciate a feature like that aswell. My nick has been taken by someone who was last seen 1 minute after he registered on this site 2.5 years ago. I plan on adding him on Steam and asking politely if he would let go of the nick on my cakeday

I agree. But I have two other ideas to add.

  1. If user gets a permanent ban
  2. Apostrophe support

Indeed... But I don't think there's much hope: I have a ticket in cg's queue about that since more than 2 years.
