Hi all

I'm not sure if it's only me (in fact I'm 120% sure it's not) but Steam download speed is incredibly low.

I tried posting on Steam forum without luck. The thing is It barely reaches 500 KB/s. Usually it goes somewhere around 250-300 KB/s and sometimes, by magic, it goes to 1MB/s.

It took me 3 days of non stop downloading to get Batman Arkham City and (brace yourselves) 3 WEEKS to get Shogun 2.
Right now I am tying to download Portal 2 and it goes with 200 KB/s so I'll have to wait all night to get it.

I tried changing the settings, the servers without luck.
The lowest speed I got on Origin was 8 MB/s and something similar for UPlay.

As for my Internet speed: speedtest.net & pingtest.net
And this is not one of the good days.

Any ideas & tips? I'm tired of waiting days to get a game on Steam.

Sorry about the links. It seams I can't make 'em Clicky.

Did you try changing the download location to your nearest?

Yup. I tried almost every single location in that list. On Steam forum some said Germany & Japan work the best for users in Europe but it didn't work for me.

I even disabled my firewall and antivirus software to see if it helps but again, it didn't work.

I deliberately set mine to Los Angeles even though I live in Australia, the reason being that its out of use whenever I need it cause the people of Los Angeles are asleep then... I tend to get 10-11MB/s average but it peaks at 13MB/s which is my maximum download speed anyway.

My default download speed is 500-700 KB/s. So good luck with your problem. ^This

Where do you people get your fast internet connections? :(

I can't really help you with your problem (I get most times my full 1 - 1.5 MBytes/s), but like Hanneman said, have you set the download server to somewhere near you?

Try using TCP view to kill the steam dl connection. It should restart with a faster speed.

Better than me last night. Got only ~20KB/s trying to download Dwarfs. I usually download from steam at 2-3 MB/s

50kbps for me, and sometimes it goes 0bytes/s during download so it take forever just to download 4 gigs. I downloaded Max Payne 3 for 2 fucking months _

@tags23: I would be happy with that. But it's still low, compared to what Steam's forum/support says it should be.

@Brotbaum:
I set the location to the city I'm in right now.
As for that Internet connection, that would be Bucharest, RO. It's 10E/month.

@ND1Razor:
I did that. It only gave it a 100 KB/s boost for about 5-10 minutes.
I also tried deleting ClientRegistry.blob to make Steam update and reset location and connection but it didn't work out.

@iBeatz: 5mb/s or 5MB/s? 5mb/s means 640 KB/s

@jatan11t: Yeah, I've been there too :(

It's weird, I get 48 mbps when downloading from steam, while my girlfriend gets only about 8 mbps. So its not as much about their servers as it is about their client. It seems not to work well with some computers.

I've had up to 11MB/sec and regularly about 7MB/sec. I think it depends on how busy the servers are and maybe the game being DL'ed as I had low speeds on the THQ bundle things (which I assume a zillion people were DL at the same time).

That's what I first thought. But it happens with old games. How many people are downloading lets say, Jericho? Pr HL source?
I can understand this with new releases of times when Steam has major sales but this is happening always.
The weird part I forgot to mention is that this is not happening with updates. I get 1-2 MB/s when updating :|

what ISP do u use? 100 dl, 60 uload thats crazy.

i have about 30 dl and 1 uload lol! and thats a good rate in canada, unless u wanna shovel about $100+ for just internet then u can get the 120-150 downloading

p.s: im with Rogers. They throttle customers non stop and its obvious they do when ur speed drops 70-85% lol.

Well, it's a local ISP. In fact it only covers 2/6 districts in the city I live.
Not that it really matters, this being the case, but it's called Home Net.

Try changing the Steam server you're using?

That's actually really fast when compared with what I usually get with my apartments internet speed. I normally clock 10 to 90 kbps. I would sometimes get lucky or something and get 1 mbps at random times.
