To quote the FAQ above (which I suggest that you read):

We're trying our best to pick a good mix of some of our favorite classic games, and hot new games! Each month's Humble Monthly release will include a mix of games never before released in a Humble Bundle, and some of our favorite classics from previous bundles.

They said "Discover games that haven't been featured in other bundles".

Too bad they didn't said straight "that weren't bundled by our competition", because I read this one as never bundled before.

Edit: Ok, I guess you can say "well, they never said all will be new, even 1 new game means they didn't lie". But then, it's hardly a feature to advertise...

If only one game is new, I'd consider it a lie. If over half the games in the bundle haven't been bundled before, then I'd consider it okay that the others have been bundled.

lol this looks like more and more an effort to 'scam' (not a proper wording) people, based on what has been released so far.

It's extremely easy for being vague yet retaining their honesty. Suppose they say all haven't been bundled, they could argue they have never bundled it before, despite it's bundled by other sources e.g Indie gala or Groupees.

Permalink

There's no point in scamming. The bundle must be attractive to some people or everyone will cancel their subscriptions and there will be no new ones. One would have to be incredibly stupid to scam this way, and Humble aren't stupid.

Hopefully they won't go that route. It's been known that big companies make stupid decisions everytime, and Humble is no different.

Humble is around 50 people. I won't call that a big company (although not small either). And I've yet to see Humble make a serious mistake. Sure, they try some things (like pricing schemes) which not everyone likes, but I don't think they've lied about anything or did things which are anti-consumer.

The bundle is looking really underwhelming so far, especially with logic dictating that it should be awesome to hook people in for another couple of months. I also love the lie about paypal not being able to accommodate their payment system when there's plenty of MMOs and services that handle monthly subs via paypal. It's probably to keep people from doing easy chargebacks when disappointment hits, since i doubt they'll be doing any refunds.

I think you might be on to something...

Permalink

Sad but true, the Paypal thing really stinks. Like you said, there's plenty of evidence for monthly subscription payments via Paypal.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

I guess there's a difference between MMOs subscription and this subscription.

In MMOs subscription, you know exactly what you buy.
Here, you know nothing about bought product, there's not even guarantee it will actually have 2nd Edition...

For comparison, you can't use paypal on Kickstarter, companies allow paypal payments ONLY after they receive their minimal goal on Kickstarter.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

I don't really see any of those as being issues, there's plenty of blind buy systems that use paypal as an option, it's not like paypal has any rules against it or anything. Not having a 2nd bundle wouldn't be an issue either, it's not like they're charging people in advance for multiple bundles, tho i can see that as maybe being an excuse if you're saying it's too much trouble to set up before they know this monthly stuff will become a thing. Tho, with all the advertisement and such that they've done, it would make them look ridiculous if they quit after 1 month.

And yeah companies on KS allow paypal as an option after the minimum is hit(some never do) but that's to protect against getting trolled with fake pledges and not meeting their goal, i don't really see what that has to do with a monthly game bundle :)

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Another reason is because Paypal allows you to cancel recurring payments without going through the seller, and that would cause problems if they had subscription info in their system but couldn't put the payments through. The followup would be a logistical nightmare. With credit cards, you have to contact Humble to cancel, unless you want to cancel your credit card, which people are unlikely to do for one seller.

Now of course, people might be able to use prepaid cards if they're uncomfortable giving out actual credit card info, or maybe even one-time use numbers, but I think Paypal makes it far too easy and that's one reason why they're not allowing it yet.

And the Paypal user agreement and fee structure may not be as advantageous as the terms Humble has through Stripe doing it's payment processing. It's not just about chargebacks, although that is a legit concern for a blind bundle, but how much it costs in fees compared to credit cards.

If this person is right, the games will be:

  • Saints Row 4 (roughly $17)
  • Besieged (roughly $9)

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

The Reddit user saw four out of six games. Transistor may still be included. "Transistor radio" is a common phrase, so unless you can come up with a game that might better match with the radio picture in the hints posted from their Twitter account, I think Transistor would probably be a good bet. But it's not a sure thing, obviously.

Edit: I suppose the radio could be the Dub-step gun from Saints Row IV, but thought the fleur-de-lis was already hinting at a game in the Saints Row series. Would they really double up on games from the same series in their first bundle?

That's why I don't like the guessing game. 12$ is a lot to me especially after I've already bought 2 bundles this month XD. If I knew what titles would be in it, I could maybe tell myself I can spare them, but for a bundle we are only guessing and probably have at least one of the games ( Rogue Legacy ). I just can't bring myself to spend so much (broke ass Bulgarian University Student XD) .

What's the justification for thinking that Transistor might be in the bundle? On what is the guess based?

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

People were guessing Transistor would be included weeks ago based on the sword in the promotional video. The blade is the right color, but the hilt looks very different. Then again, one of the hint pictures is a radio, and "transistor radio" is a very common phrase. At least, I can't imagine what other game the picture of the radio is hinting towards.

Exactly six. If Legend of Grimrock 2 counts as one of those six (not entirely clear on that point, but I think that it does), then there are five more games to be revealed on the Friday after next.

Permalink

If it means anything there are 7 'hint reveal' doors if you count the small one in the middle.

That might mean something indeed. So it could be six more games, with Legend of Grimrock 2 being an extra incentive bonus game. But I wouldn't want to make any assumptions about that, either. Better to expect five more games and become pleasantly surprised than expect six more games and become slightly disappointed.

Here's a question I think some people might have that I don't think has been answered yet: Will the games in the Humble Monthly count towards CV as bundle games, or will they be treated like most Humble Bundle tier 3 games, and remain unbundled? Legend of Grimrock 2 is still listed as unbundled, of course, but that doesn't mean that it might not become added to the list of bundled games at a later date, retroactive to the point that the Humble Monthly was first announced.

Permalink

that question is already in the OP listed as:

Some lingering questions...(If you have a burning question or answer to add, please let me know!)
Q: Will these games be added to the bundled list?

Comment has been collapsed.

Yes, I just wanted to bring it up again, since it hasn't been answered yet. I thought that a message post might spur the discussion a bit more. I know that the parent post is quite thorough, and I didn't mean for my question to seem even the slightest bit critical of the information there.

And thank you for keeping us up-to-date on all the great bundles.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

It's not really feasible to answer that without knowing what the games are first. However, assuming the 95% discount rule is still being used, then the combined value of all the games in the bundle would have to be $240 or more in order for them to make the bundle game list. Assuming there were 7 games they would have to average almost $35 each. If you do the math it seems unlikely.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

That's a really good answer, actually. We can make some guesses about what might be in the bundle, but hitting $240 in retail value seems unlikely with what we know so far. I hope you're right, and the 95% rule is applied to the Monthly Bundle.

Thanks for the awesomely logical and thought-out answer!
