GOG offering DRM free games is nice and such, but do people really buy and play games on GOG?

Personally I only use Steam. I won the division with my new GPU long ago but it was on uplay so I didn't even bother.

Do you use, play and buy on a different platform than Steam on a regular basis?

Currently converting to almost entirely use GOG.

As I see it today, it offers a much better service and has some of the games that just drown me in nostalgia

I have a lot of games on Uplay, and it's not a bad client so I don't have issues with it. I do wish that it was all just on Steam but I'm not pissed about it like a lot of people are. If Uplay or Origin were bad clients I'd understand but they're overall pretty good, though they are a slight inconvenience.

What I do is just put all of my games on Steam manually so it's as if I'm exclusively using Steam anyway. If you look at my Steam activity it seems like I haven't been doing much when in reality I've just been playing a bunch of games on Uplay.

Steam is convenient, but their support is pretty bad and I don't care for all of their policies. I like GOG, and it would be an even better alternative if they had achievements, a marketplace, and of course the user base that Steam does.

i have u play, origin and battlenet. rarely play them tho. and only for the exclusive games they have. fortunately, ubisoft games that i want to play are also available on steam. origin only for DAI, DA2, DS3, ME, and PvZGW. i was tempted to buy battlefield hardline, cause origin has sale for battlefield series atm. but changed my mind.

Besides GOG the publishers platforms lost their fight against steam pretty much from the beginning. And that's not only due to Steam's popularity but also because they are just plain bad. I had to use Origin on a almost daily basis since I was playing FIFA pretty much. Some might say classic EA.. others may say it lacks in functionality, design (ok, the newer update makes it look better) and has certain issues (friendlist not available, chat messages disappearing etc.). For me clients like Origin and Uplay are just annoying and look like quite desperate tries from other publishers they won't give up on.

I use Steam the most, but I really don't care whether a game is on Uplay, Origin, Gog or Steam. I play games to enjoy them and if there is a good game on another platform, I'll just buy it.

I mainly use Steam for games because of the library of enjoyable games. I only use Origin when I want to play Battlefield 3 & 4 or when there's a good "On the house" game. If I want old school games I go for GOG because they have it and it's DRM-Free. I used to use Uplay for watch_dogs but after The Division I stopped using it and uninstalled it altogether.

I have all my games on steam and out of convenience i can't use other platform.Exclusives and games that you can't get on steam i find some other ways to play them. However if someone asks me to suggest a platform ill send them to GOG.Steam needs to follow in their steps.

I don't mind any other platform if I need to play their exclusive game (Origin and Windows Store), but I prefer to buy and played on Steam as I can show off (a bit), and as of now, only Steam have regional price that isn't 1:1 USD (most game in Steam it's about 0.5:1 USD, though, some Japan are expensive as 1.2:1 USD but I can just buy from 3rd party website for that)

Edit: Also, thanks to cards and stuff I can even a get free game from selling them.

It's Windows 10 Store, which allows you to buy some XBoxOne games that have XBoxPlayAnyWhere program (buy one, playable both Windows 10 and XBoxOne). For example, a released, Killer Instinct, Gears of War Ultimate Edition, and upcoming Gears of War 4, Halo Wars 2, Scalebound, Sea of Thieves, Forza 4, and some.

Edit: Oops, I think I misunderstand the question, but yes, I don't mind them (well except a lack of regional pricing) because I wanted to play some XBoxOne games, that's said, I'm super excited when I heard the announcement in E3.

PS: A lot of editing, perhaps I should rest, lol.

Well, GOG Connect is dead now. they had 2 batches of games and now they just gave up it seems.
GOG Connect could've gotten people to use GOG finally, but seeing as I have 831 games and 5 movies on my account, I have no reason to start spreading my funds around different clients (I only really play a few games on Origin and some games through Steam on UPlay).
Also, I'm one of the sheep that likes achievements and the trackers that calculate how many achievements I have and my avg. game completion rate.

Keep in mind that GOG Connect needs publishers who are willing to give up free DRM-free licenses for those who bought the game once. Connect is only good for them if the people who migrate their things also buy more stuff at GOG. It and their summer sale was a good enough incentive for me to more or less switch to GOG as the main platform for purchases, but I think I am in minority here.

I'd say two things about this:
1) It's hard to imagine that they managed to get 10 or so devs in a few weeks, but none in the last 3 months.
2) GOG is never going to be competition to Steam, since they have different markets. GOG's for old games, Steam's for newer games. If you want the other type from the other seller then you're doing it wrong.

Well, Sony released No Man's Sky on GOG at the same time as it went on Steam… And several indie studios and smaller publishers do now Day 1 releases there. So it is evolving and growing. Slowly, sure, but looks like partly because the team doesn't want to offer more they could handle, which I think was one of the big reasons Valve started slipping and losing control over its own platform.

I mean, yeah, you're right. It's growing, but I doubt that it'll be a competitor to Steam for a few years still.

Frankly, I am okay with that. It has the advantage of Steam soaking up many of "4chan material" of gaming, so many other sites are free from the most toxic crowd as they decided to set up their lairs on Steam.

Yeah, just noticed that they've actually removed games from it, like Door Kickers... Well, GOG Connect barely has any value now, since they can just take the stuff that they've given us away.

They haven't removed anything. The chance to connect every game was always supposed to be time limited.

GOG implementations are far from bug-free. It's one of the reasons I've backed up every game I own there.
But they're good to their word and the connect FAQ says:

3 . Do I get to keep my game on GOG.com forever?
Yes. Once you have imported a game and own it on Steam, it's yours to keep for good. If a game is removed from your Steam account for any reason, such as through manual deletion or a refund – we reserve the right to remove the games from your GOG.com library. Setting your Steam account to Private after connecting will not cause your games to be removed.

I pretty much stopped buying games on Steam though I still buy steam games from Humble Bundle but my main focus to buy from GOG even with its shortcoming thanks to the devs who see GOG users as 2nd class players.

HB is also a good alternative, when they don't just give a Steam key but either a DRM-free version or maybe a key to another service (like the TellTale keys, which made me reach the decision to remove many of my TellTale games from Steam and just play them through the native service).

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Well, GOG prices for me are around 10% lower than Steam and then while HB got same prices as Steam, 10% goes to charity of my choice so pricewise, Steam is the worse from those. . Dunno what is the TellTale service but a friend gifted me his steam key of Tales from the Borderlands since he bough the game from telltale site.

TellTale distributes its own games through its site as well. I have a nice collection of their games on my TellTale account, so I kinda prefer to download and install from them, not through a 3rd party like Steam.

To be fair, Valve doesn't have a competitor right now.
Yahoo is still there.
Nokia died because of the technology redefining and made everything they had obsolete with a snap of a finger.
Steam's a marketplace that just earns money at a constant rate and doesn't have to create anything. Also, video games are still increasing their earnings :)

Yep, but after all, to some degree, Steam is the biggest because quite a few games are exclusive on it, while many games are exclusive on it only because it is the biggest and easiest to lock one into. If anyone can figure out how to break this deadlock, or just create a game that replaces CS:GO as the online FPS of the plebs—just how it replaced Quake—Valve may find out that maybe they have to start to actually work in order to maintain market lead. Heck, if not for regional pricing, they already lost the pricing game years ago for the products sold on their store.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

It's almost impossible to replace CS:GO just like Quake has still not been replaced.
People play Quake and the old Counter-Strike games quite frequently. CS:GO has the E-Sports scene in their pockets, since it's grown into it.
Also, I don't know what you mean by them losing the pricing game. Every key that's sold on G2A has been purchased from Steam in some sort of way. It might be a cheaper region, but they still earn money from those sales. Steam profits from all 3rd party sellers that sell Steam keys. I don't know of any developer that just sell download links. Could be just me not knowing of them though.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

I mean that if you look at the best price ever for a game, then in many if not most cases, if the Steam keys of said game were sold outside Steam, then some site or another had a better deal on said game than the Steam store itself. Or, in other words, Steam is now usually not the cheapest source of Steam games, unless you live in a region where they have low prices.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

That is absolutely true.
Steam no longer has good sales. People like TotalBiscuit have complained about the "game" that was involved in the sales. The idea of daily and flash sales. The fallacy in his argument is that the game had the normal discount that you'd have right now, or even lower and then the flash sales made it even cheaper.
But now they're asking for a higher cut and no one wants to reduce their prices. The last sale was abysmal. Just awful.

Actually nope, if for whatever reason steam would shut down its servers, you wont be able to play your games even if you made a backup, since even then you need to log in to your account at least once. (especially with games that use CEG.)

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Not that many games use CEG, afaik. Even if, that can be cracked if necessary, sooner or later. And all other games (without any other DRM crap) can be played without internet connection and without the Steam client, just run them directly from your steamapps directory.

I use both Origin and Uplay (in addition to Steam, obviously), but not regularly. I wish they would ditch these services, to be honest. It's not that much of a hassle to use, but I like to keep track of game stats and achievements and so on, but on Origin and Uplay this is completely useless for me.

Gog is a very good services also because it optimizes older games to work fine on modern systems and it do it really good, much better than steam where mostly games are completely not optimized and requires searching special patches on google etc. and I think everything should be available to download in one place.
Another great gog feature is possiblity to choose on what version of game you want to play (using gog galaxy), very important in many games as not always patch which is the newest at the moment is the one working the best.
They are drm-free as everyone know and you are right owner to the game.
Other thing, some games have much better promotions on gog than on steam.
And if anyone want to buy any game from The Witcher collection only buying it on gog makes all their money go directly to the developers CD Project as it is an owner of this service.

ps - There is starting to work a new service gog connect which gonna add some of your steam games to gog library.

All that said I think gog should add more features steam platform have (instead they added some unique) and thats for what gog galaxy (early beta) was created probably.
And steam should treat with much bigger respect older titles also why not adding achievements to them?
