I'd go with 'Wealthy Orphan Simulator'. It's a niche genre, I know.

The modern Batman games I call character action games.

I feel the combat is too shallow to be character action

If you wanted to be precise, Adventure-Brawler would be the appropriate label (with Adventure covering the exploration and puzzling elements, and Brawler covering the combat style).

There's actually been a few RPG-Brawlers, Action-Brawlers, and Adventure-Brawlers in the past, but never enough to really push for firmly distinct category labels. (In fact, Iirc, Super Smash Bros-style games are currently considered "Platform-Brawler Battle Royale," and I doubt you'd find many that'd know that off-hand, even for that popular genre. :P)

I personally have it under Action-Adventure (but at this point that genre label is as much a catch-all as "Alternative Rock" :P).

Mainly, I have it there because it's not really all too different from, say, Tomb Raider (which is an Action-Adventure game). Sure, the combat style is different, but overall the gameplay is still similar enough to appeal in much the same way.
Ergo, sticking it in the same category just makes sense to me, since I'm not labeling it to be precise to its genre, but rather, to categorize by [games that fit a certain play mood].

Thanks for the answer but just out of curiosity, how do you organise your library?

I'm sorry, could you clarify the question a bit more?
Are you asking what tags I use?

Yes, the tags you use to categorise them.

  • Action-Adventure
  • Adventure
  • Adventure - Hidden Object
  • Arcade
  • Board Games
  • Card Games
You probably won't need either of the above if you're not as hardcore into the genres as I am :P
  • Completed Games I'm done playing, either because I've finished them to my satisfaction, or decided they're not worth ever picking up again. Basically a discard category in place of outright hiding games. I find it easier to manage this way,
  • Fighting Includes single player brawlers, unless they're better fit for Action-Adventure
  • FPS
  • Horror
  • Multiplayer - Local - Co-op
  • Multiplayer - Local - Versus
  • Multiplayer - Online - Co-op
  • Multiplayer - Online - Versus
  • Multiplayer - Team PvP / MMO
The multiplayer categories are the only ones I sort games into multiple categories on, since it's useful to know if a game is both local and online, or has both primary co-op and versus modes. If the modes are just side modes (ie, a small versus mode in a primarily co-op game, or vice-versa) I only sort by primary mode.
  • Platforming
  • Puzzles
  • Racing
  • RPG - Action
  • RPG - Roguelike
  • RPG - Tactical
  • RPGs ie, All Non-Action, Non-Tactical, Non-Roguelike RPGs.
  • RTWP Real Time With Pause
  • Sidebar Games that I've completed, but may want to come back to one day
  • Sim
  • Strategy All strategy games not in following genres. Mostly Grand Strategy and Miniatures-style Tactics and the like. Technically I could split it up further, but haven't found the need to yet.
  • Strategy - 4x
  • Strategy - RTS
  • Strategy - TD Tower Defense. :)
  • Trashed For Games that simply don't work. Basically serves a similar function to the Sidebar category- it's for coming back to later [to see if they work then]
  • Trashware A recent category, ever since I started bothering to farm games for cards (for funds for giveaways :'P). Again, like Completed, one you can just use 'Hide Game' for, instead, if you don't feel the need to be as organized with it as I do.
  • Games The default unsorted category, but I use it for (games I'm actively playing, or intend to play very soon). Basically all my SG wins are in this category :D

Of course, you ought split your own categories based off of what tags are important distinctions for yourself. (For example, you'll note a lack of an 'Action' category, simply because RPG, Adventure, Multiplayer, etc would always take priority- if it didn't fit into any of them, I'd just lump it into Arcade.
Likewise, I sort by how a game plays out- for example, a RTS 4x game would go into RTS if it was fast-paced/micromanagey/etc, while it'd go into 4x if it was more of a slow-paced Europa Universalis type of real time.

Despite being my most stocked Genres, RPG, Adventure, Action-Adventure, and Strategy aren't split any further, simply because the nuances of the games sorted into them don't matter to me- for example, whether it's a Point and Click Adventure game or a Cinematic Adventure game isn't really an important distinction for me when picking a game by mood.
Likewise, whether it's a diablo-clone or an action JRPG, my preferences will be based more on the individual game than the nuance of genre- my overall mood'd simply be for an action-RPG.

In other words, all my categories are sorted down to the point where I can pick games solely off their individual merits, knowing they'll match the certain mood their genre label indicates to me.
And that's why I've got Batman under Action-Adventure, rather than Adventure-Brawler- in the end, the nuance just isn't important: I'll be playing it because I'm more in a Batman mood than a Tomb Raider mood, not because I'm more in a Brawler mood. :)

Actually Arkham Asylum is the only one from the Franchise I've played for more than 1 or 2 hours yet (on my way to Killer Croc) but although you are strongly guided by the story and always know where to go next, if I remember correctly you can still roam around and revisit different areas for collectables, right ?

Batman Arkham City was open-world.
Batman Arkham Asylum was sort of Open-World, but very very small and with nothing to do but collect Riddler Trophies. (Semi Open World?)

Action adventure. Brawler + stealth, if you like to put games into more than one category. Asylum also had standard action TPS platforming, Origins and Knight had open-world elements, so the series isn't even completely consistent to go into one category besides that really general one.
