I really doubt that'd be the reason why the community would die out, look at the Company of Heroes community, there hasn't been a patch since ages and it's still a pretty damn popular game, although that might change soon with Company of Heroes 2 releasing soon

50lvl-jerk-soldiers with assault rifles are killing this game.

More realism than most other games, that is. Real life weapons, dying very easily, no healing, no rocket jumping, no jetpacks, no super powers... You know.
On the other side of the spectrum you have games like Quake and Unreal Tournament which have much more arcade feel.

More realism than other games?
Real life weapons? I'm sorry but that's the case in most FPS with the exception of the Sci-FI ones and L4D. Talking about realism but not naming Arma or Battlefield in this thread is just silly. If you haven't tried them before then don't even waste time creating a thread about FPS.
Dying very easily? - In NS2 you die fast. In Quake you die fast. In UT you die fast. In any FPS besides TF2 you die fast. Because almost all FPS with the exception of Quake and UT have similar damage patterns for their weapons. The only thing that matters is the player. If your killer is skilled enough you'll die as fast as lightspeed lol. I guarantee you people in Battlefield die pretty fast with all the healing and stuff. It's all about a player's skill. The damage patterns are pretty similar.
I agree with the rest but saying CS has more realism than other games is a bit far-fetched. You forgot about the essentials. Goofy controls. What else? Oh yeah, the incredible unrealistic recoil. Yeah add that to the list. The recoil in CS is one of the worst in most FPS games. People say it's good because it has a solid PATTERN that's easy to learn. A game being competitive doesn't make it more or less better than the others. It just makes it easier to learn but harder to master. That's CS. It's no magic in that game, everything is straightforward. And that's why it succeeds on both competitive scene and on casual/public scene.

The newly obtained retarded community from DayZ makes ArmA much less like a military simulation, so yeah, I'd say ArmA is now a kart racing game

Lolol... You know how big the term Military Simulation is?? You can make a game to play as the controll tower of a US base and still call it a fucking military simulation...
Seriously, stop here. You dont know what military simulation is and trying to argue about it. Also you don't know what FPS mean, I've palyed soo many shooters I could brag about it and create a book called: 'How to brag about your shooter experiences, for dummies'. So kid, do some research.

I said sandbox, not simulation.
Dude, you are damn blind...
Btw: I played OFP when you was in you daddy's balls, so now I am disappointed who is kid.
Seriously, I hope you will stop playing arma series games, we dont want guys like you in our awesome community. Howg

Try Planetside 2 as well, its a good game, despite how little I've played it just doesn't run great on my shitty internet connection.

CS:S ruined CS in general, it's so god damn easy to aim in CS:S it's ridiculous

Wolfenstein Enemy Territory - this game taught me everything I ever needed to know in an online shooter. It has dodging, diving, taking cover, sniping, rambomedics, covertops, objectives, a black guy, artillery - in short everything. It's the best multiplayer experience I have every had in any game ever. Was hot when it came out, still has servers. It's free. You'll die a lot if you're used to CoD. In ET you need to be able to headshot(2 or more shots/helmet) sometimes 4 guys in a row while dodging shitloads of bullets. Ahh I miss games like this. Luckily it's still popular.

I played mohaa, back in the days, because it was "free", but stop playing it because of all the cheaters... then I played cs 1.5, didn't like it very much, yet, I played it, then I changed to cod (the first), and to the date, it's my favourite multiplayer FPS. When my friends bought cod 2, I went back to cs (already 1.6), and got addicted. Never stopped playing CS since. I would like to try COD again nowadays, but I can't afford to buy a game that is released almost every year, and its community isn't that strong as CS. Now I shifted to CS GO, I guess its life spawn will be another 10 years, maybe, so that's good for me. Oh, and I used to play some quake2 too, but only with friends, didn't like the jumpy jumpy arcade style.

You should really give another chance to Tribes: Ascend. Once you get a hold of surfing it gets incredibly fun. Chasing the flag guy at top speed while shooting is something you can't find in any other game so, even if it's just for the shake of being unique, it's worth playing.

Blacklight: Retribution and Killing Floor - THE BEST!!!

Killing Floor is one I would definitely recommend.

Quake Live, Quake 3 CPMA, Tribes: Ascend, CS:GO, Red Orchestra 2 and Shootmania Storm are my favorites atm, especially Shootmania's 3v3 Elite mode is great.
BTW co-op games like KF, Payday and L4D2 bore me way too much, even if I play with them IRL friends. I'll always be a competitive-junkie I guess :D

DOD:S is my only FPS these days. TF2 is great, but it takes forever for the game and maps to load.
I used to play CS 1.6 years ago, especially in school, but probably won't be returning to it. I prefer DOD:S.
I've played both L4D2 and KF. Neither appealed to me, not in the slightest.
I played NS2 during the free weekend and loved it! Even managed to guide my team to a win as a human commander. I have to run it at absolute minimum settings though, my PC is old. And I didn't really enjoy playing alien, that side could use more work from the devs. I'll still be buying it at some point in the future though.

I've found myself with a complete lack of good Multiplayer FPS games.
Blacklight Retribution: Good game, nice graphics and decently balanced, but the menus are way too complicated.
TF2: Great for trading, but it's vanilla gameplay never caught on for me that much.
Battlefield 3: A great game, although extremely annoying when teams become too unbalanced, good game but not enough friends have it and also I don't currently have a mic.
CS:GO: Someone gifted this to me, I never got the chance to play it more, because I had just bought BF3 and was playing that.
Co-op games:
L4D2: All time favorite, just amazing amounts of fun when playing with friends, especially when one is new to the game and stupidly runs into a witch xD
Payday: The Heist: Still haven't tried co-op, bought it super cheap so I don't mind so much that I didn't get much out of it, but there's a lot of seemingly hidden controls and things to do to make the heist go smoothly, I wish there was a tutorial or something.
BF3: Still haven't tried BF3 Co-op, but I really, really want to.
Far Cry 3: Same as above, looks like a good bit of fun, haven't had the time and also no mic =/

BLR has complicated menus indeed, it's very overwhelming for a beginner, but you get used to it pretty fast. I'm almost 10 hours in and already got the hang of it.
TF2 trading is absolutely horrible. The community sucks and traders are among the worst kind of people you can encounter online. Just look at what they did to key values. Ugh. Playing is where it's at, brilliant gameplay if you stay off spam friendly maps like dustbowl.

For some recent (kind of) PC games:
TF2: played this game extensively. Classes are all unique and keeps things fresh. Teamwork is not always needed but can make a huge difference. It's free now so there's no reason not to give it a try!
Played day of defeat source as a sit back and relax game for maannnyyy many years until bad company 2. Heavy emphasis on positioning.
CS franchise: im sure everyone here is familiar with CS
L4D: great series. Even better after watching Zombieland.
Battlefield 2142: not sure if the multiplayer is still alive at this point but this game was amazing. Cloaking, commander mode, and MECHS?!
Bad company 2: Loads of fun. Choice of classes were actually dependent on the situation. Nothing more satisfying than hearing someone behind a wall, blasting the wall down and popping his head. My favourite battlefield game. It hits all the right notes.
Crysis 2: powers and verticality added some new elements. Somehow didnt really feel it.
Gotham city imposters: surprisingly fun. Maps and the tight&twitchy controls were really similar to COD games. Their main selling point was the different methods of traversal and gadgets.
COD: Multiplayer has been pretty much the same with minimal updates simce COD 4. I have to admit, black ops 2 had a couple cool new additions.
Battlefield 3: controls are not as tight as it should be. Destructibility is vastly reduced. Player base has been fragmented by dlc packs. Only a couple servers cater to those who only have the base game. Wouldnt recommend unless you plan to get all dlc's.
Natural Selection 2: Just started playing this a week ago so i dont have a fair opinion on it yet. A mix of FPS and strategy genres. Like the OP said, steep learning curve and the community is generally not very welcoming to newbies. but the fact that good teamwork actually pays off as your commander sends your small army to pillage bases is really exciting. Digging it!

My experience with NS2 was very positive. I have encountered less than 5 assholes in nearly 150 hours of playing. When I was a newbie, people were friendly.
And you're very correct about positioning in DOD:S, it makes a world of difference.

In this thread, we talk about multiplayer FPS games and our opinions and experiences with them. Maybe even compare them. I'll start off.
Blacklight: Retribution - I started playing this few days ago and I like it very much so far. Doesn't seem like pay to win and getting everything you want takes a bit of grinding, but nothing too severe. If you just play not thinking about it, it will come sooner than you'd expect (or so I hear).
Borderlands - Gets boring really fast when playing solo, but I can play it literally 8-10 hours a day with friends on Skype. It has decent replay value if you're into leveling all 4 classes. I'm personally interested only in hunter and siren so that's easily 100-150 hours of gameplay.
Borderlands 2 - I own it, but I haven't played it yet. I hear it fixed most things that were bad about the first game.
Call Of Duty franchise - The last COD games I player were COD1 and COD2. From what I hear, last good installment was COD4 and from there everything went downhill. Community is absolutely horrible and the games are very dumbed down. I have to admit, though, Black Ops 2 looks fun if you play with proper people.
Counter-Strike 1.6 - I used to play CS back in elementary school when 1.5 was new. I played it with classmates in LAN. The game is so old it seems like everyone had enough time to become godlike at it so it's not very friendly towards new players.
Counter-Strike: Global Offensive - Much more friendly towards new players when compared to 1.6. I bought it on release, but haven't given it much attention because I was focused on other games. Looks promising.
Day Of Defeat: Source - Most people seem to have forgotten about this game, but it's very good. I see it as cross between CS (realism) and TF2 (teams and classes).
Killing Floor - Excellent team game with ridiculous replay value if you don't mind dated graphics.
Left 4 Dead 2 - Most people compare it to KF, but their only similarities are being team based and shooting things. It's also excellent, but requires friends to be fun because community is pretty bad.
Natural Selection 2 - The most team oriented game I've played to this date. If your CPU can handle it, you'll have tons of fun. My current main game, along with BLR. It has a steep learning curve, but if you can handle rough beginning, you're in for quite a ride. Winning feels very rewarding, more than in other games, and especially if you were the commander or top scoring player.
Payday: The Heist - I expected much more from this game, but for some reason it doesn't really float my boat. Essentially L4D2 with robbing banks instead of shooting zombies. It doesn't seem very intuitive, especially the HUD. That's one of main reasons why I got put off, along with lack of communication. Maybe I have to give it another chance.
Team Fortress 2 - Everyone knows TF2. It has the best microtransaction system I know of and as far as I'm concerned, money gives you next to no advantage when it comes to combat. People still throw money at Valve like there's no tomorrow, though, so I guess they deserve props for achieving that. It's the game I've played the most (over 1300 hours when you count in idling and rendering videos) so naturally I'm the most comfortable with its mechanics. With 9 classes there is something to suit everyone's playing style.
Tribes: Ascend - I have very limited experience with this one, I disliked the mechanics of the game (the whole surfing and jetpacking deal) so I promptly gave up and uninstalled it.
Out of the whole bunch, it's really hard to say which one is the best. I would recommend all of them except for COD (for obvious reasons, but I'm not objective here), Payday and Tribes (probably good games, but not fitting my personal taste).
