Hello,

My biggest pet peeve on this site is users mass joining pretty much any giveaway they see, regardless of if they're interested in the game or not. I dislike this for the reason that someone who might really want the game now has less change of winning because someone is just joining things or worse using something like Autojoin to enter all giveaways.

My request is to somehow filter out these people and when I make a giveaway, make sure it goes to someone who really does want it.

Any and all tips to make that happen would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks.

Make a steam group, invite whoever you want - make a group-only GA for that group.

Add interested people to your whitelist - make a whitelist only GA.

make a whitelist giveaway, invite only people interested in the game you offer.

recruit them with a filter, like, have "this" game wishlisted before X date.

"recruit them with a filter, like, have "this" game wishlisted before X date."

This sounds pretty great, how do I apply this said filter?

I've seen this kind of threads here and you just send invites/whitelist people you choose yourself. My wishlist is small comparing to games I'd like to have (I really enjoy HOGs but I don't put them on my wishlist for example). Others have large wishlist, putting anything midly interesting into it. But the decision how to choose people for YOUR giveaways and groups and whitelist is entirely up to you :)

you just create a thread and mention it there. then you check each person's wishlist and see if they had it wishlisted before the date you specified.

you can also ask for more things, like steamgifts level, ratio, no unactivated/multiple wins, etc.

  • Blacklist people you dont want to join your giveaways
    or
  • Private giveaway, give link just to people you want.
    or
  • Whitelist giveaway
    or all 3.

You can micromanage who can join by using group or private giveaways and have people apply through a Discussions thread for instance.
If your rule can be phrased in a general measure, you can use the SGTools software to automatically apply it to your private giveaways.

Would this recruitment thread take place in the Forum Category we are in now? (General)

i d suggest an approach that will be a little bit different but still you dont have to check everyone that enters by hand.
make a riddle/puzzle with http://www.itstoohard.com/create and just type a few questions about said game and whatever you come up with :)
if someone is interested they will solve it and join. bots are pretty much excluded that way. yes.. anyone who solves it can too.. but cmon... who goes through the trouble to solve a puzzle... and if... didnt they earn a chance?
oh and users who prefer private profiles can also join ;)

I like this idea! How would the system know the person has finished puzzle and is OK to enter though? Do I have to manually whitelist everyone who finished puzzle?

when they solve the puzzle they get the link to the giveaway as a reward for solving it, that's how they'll enter :)

But won't the giveaway eventually show up in the front page near the ending time? I don't see an option for "unlisted" on create new giveaway screen.

you make your giveaway private (you can make a private giveaway by selecting "Invite Only" at step "6. Who Can Enter") so only people who have the link to it can enter
the puzzle system takes care of showing the link of your private giveaway to puzzle solvers

Perfect. This is all coming along.

FINAL question: Do I get contributor points for Private giveaways?

I think if more than 5 people enter you get CV. I'm sure it's somewhere in the FAQ.

EDIT: Yes, in the FAQ it says:

If a giveaway is invite only, or for a whitelist or Steam group, it will only add value towards your level if it receives 5 or more entries. This is in place to prevent small groups of friends from attempting to cheat the contributor system, and to encourage users to expand the reach of their giveaways. The whitelist feature offers an easy way to target a larger audience, and you can combine it with small Steam groups to receive a greater number of giveaway entries if needed.

Yes, sorry, should have checked, my apologies. It indeed says:

"If a giveaway is invite only, or for a whitelist or Steam group, it will only add value towards your level if it receives 5 or more entries."

EDIT: Ah, replied before seeing your edit :)

Under "Who Can Enter", you have 3 options:

  • Everyone
  • Invite Only
  • Whitelist / Steam Groups

You'll want the 2nd one.
