Opened origin earlier had a small update for the client and now it says "Beta" in top right corner. Does anyone know what they might be doing. Wonder if they might have there own "big picture" to compete a little with Steam. Hmmmmmm?

The obvious assumption is they are testing out some new stuff for their client.

Steam has an ongoing BETA as well but you need to opt into that.

I'm sure the fact they have half the userbase and 1/16th of the game catalog, probably contributes to the "better servers"... FWIW.

I doubt they even have half the userbase. And fewer people also means fewer requests for Support, so its not surprising that their Support is also better.

Actually their politics are vastly inferior. Steam has never been part of any big controversial issues, and whenever one had the potential to crop up, Valve addressed it quickly. However EA is known for blundering into bad/irksome decisions and only altering them after a lot of sustained pressure from their customers.

Their support is solid though. I can't really compare the servers given I've never had an issue downloading anything from either of them, however Origin STILL has a bug it's had from YEARS ago, where it will randomly wipe a large chunk of a download for no reason, repeatedly. Eight gigs to download? Just got to six gigs? Whoops! Now you're back down to two gigs again for the fifth time! The 'solution' they give you is to opt into the beta participation. Strangest thing? It works. Yet the bug still persists, years later. That's not even getting onto things like Spore (an EA game on an EA platform), where patching it up to date and installing the expansion packs goes wrong frequently, requiring you to uninstall and re-install until it goes correctly... assuming you enabled the option to keep installers after their first run.

Origin will never compete with Steam until it becomes more than just a launcher, and for that it needs the draw of community, which can only reliably be seeded if they have a large selection of reasonably priced games to draw people in, or exclusives that heavily promote befriending strangers.

Origin isn't very good, but then again it's not absolutely horrible either.

This is a terrible attitude to hold. Not sure why so many people want to hate on any sort of platform that would compete with steam. To be fair, nothing exists that's even close to what steam provides but that is a problem. No one should monopolize anything. As unlikely as it is, if Valve were to go under or just stop giving a fuck the state of computer gaming would be crippled because of what a stranglehold they have on the platform. Also no competition generally breeds mediocrity. Look at Blizzard, there was a time and day when I would of thought they could do no wrong and were the kings of PC gaming. These days they are basically Zynga, with a bigger bank roll.

What a childish, useless reply to a comment that makes some fair and important points. Why not just piss off and get off the forums if you're not even interested in any form of reasonable discussion or interaction, instead of posting "oh look I'm too cool for this, I'm so cool I can mindlessly repeat references to old, tired internet memes" comments?

Your pointless insults and tone conveyed a distinct sense of anger, especially considering the comment was more a reference to "The responses to this will be entertaining", as in, "expect drama".

Yes it's a meme, no, it's point held up very well, albeit I don't think they expected the hollow anger to come from you.

Isn't most of EA's software 'beta'?

It says "BETA", because you opted in to the beta client in Origin settings. No different than Steam.
