The reason is, the most of them are on Index. (Or uncut versions of these games.) and Steam sell this.
But some games are not removed from Steam (index too)

I hope Steam removed the Digital Homicide Bullshit from Steam, that's a real horror and brutal not these "hard" games!

However, this applies only for Online-Store.
most games that are not available here on Steam
can be bought here without any problems as a retail - maybe with a age proof if the seller works as the law requires
therefore i do not understand why there is still no age verification on Steam

Even in Movies, we have our own versions Cut for Cinema,Television ( a movie with violence
aired before 22:00 is mostly a different cut as the same Movie aired after that time) also for DVD Releases
a bunch are banned in their original version this concerns but mostly only older films <2004/5
To your question about From Dusk till Dawn is in the original version indexed here in GER

Not sure about books im not reading much in my life, but we have for everything our own translations
which do not have many countries perhaps we have books that are written in different versions
But there you have to ask a bookworm I have no idea about books ;O

Sorry to hear that for the germans.
I never really got the censorship either. I am from the netherlands and I think our morals and values are sorta the same as our neighbours. So why do they do this stupid stuff there and here everything is fine.

For fuck's sake -_- god, I hate this fucking country when it comes to video games. Why the fuck do they have to make such a fuss out of this bullshit if (almost) all other countries can get their shit straight?! Fucking bullshit.

Glad I redeemed Rise Of the Triad before this xD" Man, so nice to live in germany for us gamers...
Something that pisses me off, is that they also don't allow to activate some ROW keys. I mean for some games it is forbidden to sell them in germany, but not to own them! But yeah, what else to say. It's just ridiculous...

I wondered why Prototype even suddenly was available in the store. So I bought I although I had retail version. Smart move xD

And: the developers AND valve are to blame as they sadly misinterpret German law in most cases!
