What is the most overrated game of all time in your opinion and why?

Maybe not of all time, but... NIER AUTOMATA. What a piece of shit.

From indie games... Journey - another garbage.

I tried it (Nier Automata), wanted to like it, kept pushing on, telling myself: it will get better soon... but the moment never came and I abandoned the fight.
then again, I never got into MGS either.
Two games with overwhelming reviews.
Maybe it's me. I'm not that young anymore :D

Empty open world and massive amount of backtracking (Nier)

MGS u mean Metal Gear Solid games? I loved those (and started playing them in 2018 (MGS1) - fresh breeze of gaming for me (the same thing with Resident Evil Series which started in 2021 (RE0HD))).

Nier had to be the most overhyped game I played.

Just boring it keeps on dragging and never gets better.

Wow, 26 comments and nobody mentioned Call of Duty series? o.O
By that I mean probably all the games starting from CoD 4: Modern Warfare.

Differently from some users here, I actually like the game that I think is overrated. There are just couple problems. Same formula making things stale, focus on the spectacle instead of on gameplay (though I enjoyed my time in multiplayer for a long while, which is just pure gameplay), very linear and scripted levels all compund to - in my opinion - bring these games down.
Are they good action games? Hell yeah, those that I played are great Hollywood movies you can play in 1st person. But they definitely aren't greatest shooters, or even games for that matter.

Because nobody think CoD games are piece of art or something... those games are just ultra popular - this is a different thing ;)

Never got into the online multiplayer but loved the black ops and modern warfare campaigns and zombie modes as a kid. Haven't played anything after black ops 2 though.

I actually enjoyed COD Modern Warfare 1, 2 and 3 (the Soap Arc) series. The story is pretty engaging and there are quite a few memorable and well voiced characters. Complete freedom of movement and backtracking is usually possible.
The Black Ops series by Treyarch I do not like at all. Black Ops 1 is ok but Mason is so annoying. Woods and Reznov practically held the game together.
I can also recommend World at War and the original COD 1 and 2. Everything else is forgettable.

I don't hate souls games but ! Most ppl and some friends who played it way before than me sold me the game as "the most difficult game/experience of all times, with realistic combat and not holding hands for you"

I went back to play those games with that idea in mind and i remember thinking "why on earth do I have to roll over and over? How is that realistic?"

The difficulty its ok, I grow up playing arcade games so if you didn't learn how to play eventually you'll end up losing some money for every time you try.

Other game I can think of is Skyrim, again its not a bad game but I just can't play it w/o lots of mods to improve the game.

I'm not fan of the word overrated, it has "everybody is wrong, I'm the one right" energy, which is very weird in a topic about preferences and taste.
But to answer - there are games I certainly expected to like a lot more based on discussions, review score, and its gameplay / premise. Games where I generally envy "the fans" for getting so much more out of the game than I could.

Hollow Knight: it plays wonderfully, the art direction is superb, but even when I was playing it daily, it felt like a (light) chore instead of something I WANT to play. It's interesting and fine, but not anything more for me, sadly.

Everhood: I wrote a very confused review about it, I just don't know what the game wants to be, the story is interesting but I hated its delivery. Not many shares my point of view about the story's interpretation, but it's fine. It was a thoroughly confusing experience, including the rhythm game-like parts where the stuff didn't happen to the beats of the music.

TT's The Walking Dead S1: It's a great game, it was very interesting! But I just can't feel the story as much as people do who praise the game to the heavens and back. Maybe because I don't have kids, maybe because I can't turn the little voice off in my head that tells me: I shouldn't get too invested as because I my choices only from a small list (and they only matter every now and then). I think it's a good 8/10 game, and I'm really curious what people feel, who genuinely rate it 10/10 as their favourite game ever.

Baldur's Gate: Dark Alliance.

I don't know why it's so fondly remembered. Hunter: The Reckoning, made by the same people around the same time, was much better.

Fondly remembered? I never played it, but I was always under the impression that it was seen as a weak side project that should never have gotten the Baldur's Gate name. Or maybe that's just showing the bias of PC gamers who saw that a developer took a game that couldn't have possibly worked on its era's consoles, and made a console game under the series' name (which necessarily bore little resemblance to the "real" Baldur's Gate games).

i.e. I thought it was the "Fallout Tactics" of the Baldur's Gate series. 🤣 (FOT was terrible, but everyone knew it was terrible from the beginning, so I can't call it "overrated." It's properly rated)

Skyrim, Fallout 3 + 4 - Bethesda "story" and open world games. (Fallout New Vegas is something else and better)

And to understand that nomination better:

Elder Scrolls Morrowind was way greater and i still follow the OpenMW open source reimplentation.

These Bethesda games are shallow, story / writings isn't that great, word building / atmosphere / immersion isn't that great, combat isn't good and there are many bugs. And all these games get high praise, which i don't think they deserve.

Still understand why people like them personally and why they are they are satisfied.

Btw. would love to read more than one liners about game nomination, so one could understand the nomination better. No arguing ofc., but it's more interesting to read a nomination with reasons than just namedropping.

Happy Cake Day!!
Have only played Skyrim amongst the games u shared about. My experience was a bit different, probably cz Im no connoisseur of RPGs and have only played a handful. Maybe that's why I enjoyed Skyrim, also modding elevated the experience even further ^^

But I see your point about it being shallow story wise. With something like a WItcher, there are elements of storytelling which make you contemplate ethically, in dialogue choice as well as hunt monsters etc. That feeling was quite low when playing skyrim, the diversity and variety made up for that, atleast for me.

Thanks, i was surprised to see that it's my cake day haha. Really low chance to post here then. (not much active in the community)

I know a lot of people who enjoy unmodded/modded Skyrim. (yeah modding should make many more possible)

It's not a bad game at all. Just a little overhyped IMHO. But thats just my opinion^^

My best friend enjoys it just because of the big open world, walking and the landscapes / atmosphere. She likes walking simulators haha :D

Happy cake day :)

I personally really enjoyed the FO4 and even 76 (yeah yeah I know). Skyrim as well, but I don't think I ever finished it.
I am not that "hardcore" of a gamer. So for me the story in FO4 and Skyrim for example where top notch. I just liked them. I mean I am not going to praise them for originality or being something spectacular obviously - but I have replayed both numerous times. Skyrim just hits the nail for me with the atmosphere of the game. FO is simply a weak spot for me since I love post apocalyptical theme. So even 76 despite everything I still liked..

I of course liked New Vegas as well, but even though it is considered better RPG, it never really stayed with me. I would guess the praise for these games come from the more generic gamers. Even other games Bathesda has released - Ghostwire, deathloop, prey for example I have enjoyed but I wouldn't call any of those brilliant. But they do have some chemistry with the world building and lore they put in, that is not just too much or intrusive for the casual gamer. I mean I value if a developer puts a thought to very detailed and deep lore within game, but at some point it gets a bit too much. And that's why I think these a bit simplified RPGs have amassed such a liking.

As a Fallout fan: Hear, hear!

Fallout 3 and 4 were fun games. I really liked them. But they were crappy Fallout games. When Fallout 4 game out, the joke was that it should have been called "Fallout 3 2," because "Fallout 3" was its own kind of game, not a legitimate sequel to Fallout 2, so Fallout 4 was the second game in the "Fallout 3" series. :)

FONV was much better, and Obsidian did what they could to make an actual Fallout game within the confines of Bethesda's open world first person action engine. It was a much better sequel to Fallout 2 than anything Bethesda made.

Fortunately, Wasteland 2 and 3 came out in recent years, which does a better of job satisfying real Fallout fans than even FONV did. :)

I love Skyrim because it has everything I ever wanted in Oblivion (Dual wielding, Better horse maneuverability, more immersive etc.) However coming from Oblivion it does feel a little watered down and more mainstream. (Even more obvious if you played Morrowind)
I'm yet to actually play fallout since the terrible Fallout 3 bug on Windows 10 when it came out. Its fixed now so I should finally leave the vault.

Carefully designed levels > Mundane open world

I guess every AAA studio is trying do that in order to keep players as long as possible, and thanks to them I no longer enjoy side quests. They don't test the whole map how could they when it's humongous before the release and everywhere is a bugfest nowadays. In Witcher 3 even side quests were unique, when you look at any Assassin's Creed game, they're filled with useless bunch of quests, you cannot even see what's important on the map because of so many markers on the map.

There are also carefully designed open world games but they are rare, even legendary. :)

I can count a couple but there should be more.

Deus Ex: Human Revolution: Not exactly as open world as others but definitely well designed in that regard.
Horizon Zero Dawn: This game is a great example to that, it's like carefully designed linear levels and huge map smooshed together.
The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt: This is one of the best, if not THE best. There is no loading between indoors and outdoors, whole world is well put and connection between places via secret ways are admiring.

Between those I played, Baba is you
I cannot call it a puzzle game as in puzzle games you need to use your own creativity while in that game, there is only 1 solution to the answer which makes it very hard to solve specially with the mechanics it introduces
Also the community is toxic af and workshop is broken

Comment has been collapsed.

I think i saw more then 1 solution in like 2 parts of some demo i played, also recall seeing some video showing an alternative solution. Havent got it yet so i cant tell, but if i were to guess theyre probably more likely on the begining since growing complexity and challenge is probably what leads to 1 solution only

Thats a shame to hear, its on my wishlist - my real one (i fill my steam wl with 'games to check') - i was also under the impression of more freedom and that game have a toxic community? I dont get people, such a cozy game... wasted oportunity given the whole programming basis

i will still get it someday, even with the only 1 solution- i just renewed my expectations, lowered to what i will get.

Off Topic and possibly unpopular: I've noticed several people using modding as a positive point as to why they like a game. I feel that's kind of cheating? Mods weren't part of the original game the designers created - if anything it's where players saw something lacking and decided to fix it. It's a bit like saying you like an original story after having read so much fanfic/fanvids/fanon you no longer remember what the canon actually was.

I'm not saying that modding doesn't add huge amounts of variety and fun to a game and isn't a positive thing (it is and can add lots of replayability) but it feels like the game developers then get to take credit for way more than their original contribution.

I guess I' m interested in how peoples' thoughts on any transformative works (i.e. mods) should be considered when discussing opinions about a game.

Oh definetly. Ive played most bethesda games to death and was obsessed with some...
At the same time theyre some of my worst rated games with horrible design choices in my opnion

I loved the games 'i made'/adapted via then, wich is a very different thing. But even then they were only aproximations of the games i wished existed/could be.

Fallout 3 (and i bet 4, only one ive jumped) for example was even offensive to me - i was an obsessive fallout 1-2 fan, even helped fan-translate it and its design docs into my native language, and Bethesda bascially pissed on the ip. But end of the day it was a cosplayed 3d falllout we could walk in first person- the years ive played it were always testing new mods and editing mods myself, all trying to recreate what a fallout game shouldve been.

there are many but what comes first into mind and are more popular is fortnite and minecraft.
1) fortnite: wtf is this shit building wooden planks and stairs around you during combat? not to mention the battle royale isn't the base game but some zombie crap, they just took the battle royale idea from others. can't stand this game, it is too childish for me.
2) minecraft: too boring and pointless for me. unattractive visuals and extremely repetitive

generally speaking most famous farming/building games and other simulation games (Stardew Valley, Animal Crossing, Euro Truck Simulator etc) are boring to me. i don't want to do real life chores i want interesting story and gameplay

I don't know, this may sound overly "politically correct", but my slightly skewed tastes (where cheap casual games and exquisitely crafted RPGs coexist and where "linear" and "choices matter" are both words I look for in reviews) lead me to honestly believe that there are no overrated games. Rating is subjective, just because it doesn't appeal to me doesn't mean other people wouldn't rate it highly. The mere fact that many people play and enjoy a game is evidence that it has something that makes people like it.

If I had to choose, it would be every single Souls and Souls-like game out there. That's my answer to the question, "Which games do many people like, but you don't?" Are they overrated? Probably not. Many people seem to enjoy them and rate them highly.

Not the most high-profile example, but it was pretty highly lauded upon its release, and successful enough to get a sequel made: Mirror's Edge. I wanted to like it, but the controls were just atrocious, and I found it unplayable. I couldn't for the life of me figure out why it was so well-received. It was way overrated.

I don't claim this is the most overrated "of all time." It's just one that came to mind quickly as overrated. "of all time" is a really high bar, and I don't think I've played nearly enough games to reach it!

Zeldas. I bet theyre all very good, the polish and care is palpable, but its been raised to a mythical level that far surpasses reality.
And this comes from someone that have every reason to be a fan- im almost obsessed with rpgs, i love fantasy (even more so when it doesnt look generic) and i grew up suffering for not playing then- magazines and friends talked about but i never had consoles. Save for 30min-1hour hands on with ocarina of time at a friends house i couldnt touch then until adulthood

Then i finally had a pc, and emulators became a thing...
I enjoyed then. They would have a nice place in my library(if they were on pc) - right alongside games nowhere near the level of praise Zelda gets.
Perhaps i wouldve enjoyed then a bit more if they werent so hyped up- every time i started one i was expecting to be blown away, to find a new top 10 favorite (even the ones more dated, i love retro games, i am not imune to nostalgia either).

But i definetly put then above most if not all jrpgs, a genre full of overrating itself. I loved playing final fantasy 8 back in its day (it was released on pc!), fond memories, but i can recognize the padding and how the ip is half flashiness

I feel that Zelda games are in a category with Half-Life - they are great fun, but you had to be there and then to really know how they were revolutionary / miraculous. We don't get the feeling people got at the first cutscene-less shooter, first 3D Zelda, or the feeling on pushing a system to the absolute max in an era when tech and the developer's craft was progressing at a breakneck speed.
