Main reason is that people are selfish and want instant gratification. With "Mighty No. 9" they get a copy of the game (for all but the lowest tier). With the solar panel project, they get much less than you would normally get with a kickstarter/indiegogo project, not to mention the fact that it is a bit of startup money they want (even small-scale implementation will cost way more than the $1 million they're looking for), and the fact they are even looking for it indicates they either can't find someone with the capital who is willing to back them (which indicates either a problem with the product or poor management in many cases), or they are just looking to remove any personal risk, so if their company fails they won;t have lost any money they personally invested.
And even if they succeed, it'll be decades, at least, till it is widespread enough for a significant number of potential backers to even see it where they live (plus, backers won't get any advantage to its use non-backers wont, and, as mentioned earlier, people are selfish).
Personally, I hope they succeed in their vision, but crowd-funding is not really a viable solution to this kind of thing. At least they chose indiegogo and not kickstarter, so they'll be able to use the crowd-funding they do get to jump-start things a bit.
Edit: Also wondering if they they are planning on capturing the potential power in pressure.

I see. Also the instant gratification thing was exactly what I was thinking. Like, whatever. At least 50 years down the road as they suggest like. At least the next generation and all of the plants and animals living in this world will have a healthier world to live in.
Plus as someone else suggested. If this worked out, they'd get a lot of attacks from tons of companies.
Cuz obviously, money > environment

Oh definitely, they'll have some issues from established companies (especially oil companies, as the power could be used to make entire parking lots capable of charging electric cars, rather than just a handful of spaces, among many, many other things that'll cut into their bottom line). But hopefully enough people will become interested/informed in the possibilities to get politicians to realize that the immediate gain in "donations" they'd get would be outweighed by the potential. Of course, the other problem is getting a good source for the materials needed.

ten millllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllioooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooon bucks. :3
Yeah I know ten million isn't nearly enough. Sometimes I wish that money could just be irrelevant when it comes to improving the livelihood of our planet. It's kind of annoying. Like "hey we have the materials to save our planet and everything in it. But we're not going to cause we didn't have enough money." Like. Waht.

Thing humanity is too stubborn to make true.
The world would be better for everyone <-(mighty no.9 (videogame))
But I guess we don't consider it something worth putting our money into
Mighty no.9 has about 4 million
and this invention doesn't even have four-hundred thousand yet. And all it needs it 1 million. How stupid.
