I just finished playing Borderlands 1 (just in time for the remaster ๐Ÿ™„). Now Iโ€™m looking to play something else before jumping into Borderlands 2, but I have so many games in my backlog I want to play that I canโ€™t make a decision. Thatโ€™s why Iโ€™m looking for your recommendations.

Iโ€™ve pulled out some a mix of the highest rated and most rated games on Steam from my backlog. What should I play next? Why?

Feel free to recommend multiple games and even rank them if you want. Bonus points to games that have great gameplay, an engaging story, and controller support. Also, let me know if any of these games is overrated and I should skip it.

I was going to do a poll, but I had too many for a poll, so I just listed them below.

Update: Thanks to all your responses so far! I just played Refunct and Firewatch and started Hollow Knight based on your suggestions. I added a few more games to the list, so please do keep making recommendations for what to play next.

The Games

Apotheon
Batman: Arkham City
Brothers - A Tale of Two Sons
Call of Juarez Gunslinger
Deus Ex: Human Revolution - Director's Cut (never played a Deus Ex game)
Dishonored
Distraint
Firewatch (played)
Guacamelee! Gold Edition
Half-Life 2 (I know, I know. I should've played this already, but I jump around a lot between types and series of games.)
Hitman: Absolution (never played a Hitman game)
Hollow Knight (playing now)
Hyper Light Drifter
Infinifactory
Lara Croft and the Guardian of Light
Life is Strange
The Messenger
Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor
Mirror's Edge
Out There Somewhere

Portal Stories: Mel
Psychonauts
Rakuen
Refunct (played)
Resident Evil 5
Saints Row: The Third (never played a Saints Row game)
Shadow Warrior (2013)
Sleeping Dogs: Definitive Edition
Slime Rancher
Spec Ops: The Line (never played a Spec Ops game)
The Stanley Parable

Oh, and hereโ€™s a choo choo for your two cents.

I like to mix my genres and game types (FPS, Strategy, platformer, etc) up between games, so I'd rule out the FPSes. Something more like Life is Strange perhaps?

Sleeping Dogs would prob be my #1 choice out of that list, tho I haven't played a lot of those.

I'd say Life is Strange. It's probably the best game I played storywise. I don't remember when was the last time (if ever) I was invested so much into the story and cared about the characters (and I'm a 30yo man, not a tumblr girl).

As for other games on the list I played:

To the Moon is kinda meh. I'd say it's way overrated. Storywise it's fine (not great), gameplay-wise it's tedious. The puzzles felt extra and repetitive, as if they were added just so that the game had any gameplay. Just like David Cage's "games" and QTEs. Except his games suck both gameplay and storywise.

Sleeping Dogs - I don't really like GTA-style ames, but this one was fun. (Were it not open world, more focused on the story, I'd like it even more.) It's solid storywise (for the genre) and the gameplay is fun.

Psychonauts - the story is goofy and fun. And the gameplay is great.

Witcher - I played like 2 or 3 chapters, but then got bored. (Nothing to do really with the game itself, but more with the way I play open world games - usually it takes me 2-3 times longer to beat them than most people.) Can't say anything about the story, but the fighting system is... Well, you either like it or not (more probably not :D)

Deus Ex: HR - played only the first chapter, so can't say anything about the story either. But the world design is beautiful.

Trine 2 - haven't played this one, but the first one was great.

Dishonored is fantastic, and taught me to love stealth. Great setting, story, and stealth gameplay (even for those who think they hate stealth).

But if you want something to play with a controller:

Life is Strange - one of my favorite games, great story, great characters, great emotional impact.

Sleeping Dogs - like GTA 4, but fun! Beautiful setting, pretty good story, and great gameplay that combines the best parts of Assassin's Creed parkour, Batman Arkham combat, Max Payne slow-mo jump shooting, and fun Just Cause style driving, all with great checkpoints and systems that don't waste your time.

Saints Row 3 - like GTA 4, but silly and over the top. Genuinely funny, often ridiculous, and a great setup for the stellar SR4. The only downside is that the optional side-content is kind of boring and grindy, but you can skip most of it.

Brothers - pretty good story without any dialog, interesting mechanics, short.

There are many a great game in this list, and you'll probably have fun with any of them, but only a grand total of two people said Psychonauts and I consider it a must play, so I'll say Psychonauts too to drive the point home.

Personally, I'd just fire the RNG and pick whichever it said, though. :D

>>>

The Witcher it is. :^)

Firewatch would be my go to game on this list, Short and sweet!
Half Life 2 as mentioned before is a bit overated but all good, I think Episode 2 was the best part of it.
Spec Ops the line is a game i never really get the love for, Average console shooter with "provoking content"
Deus Ex could be great even if i would go for the first game before myself but i don't think it is a must.

Great games. I would have similar problems all the time, but for the moment I'm stuck in an Elder Scrolls Online rut. I'm right at the point where I'm starting to jones for other games.

A lot of these are on my "I can't believe I haven't played this yet" list as well. I'd probably go for Dishonored or Subnautica, with To The Moon as an option for a shorter play run. I am in the middle of The Witcher and I enjoy it a lot but I haven't played for about a year, a consistent problem I have with big roomy RPGs. Which is a shame, especially because big roomy RPGs are my favorite kind of game. But I've got a scattered and pretty intense schedule, and it is what it is.

Whatever you choose, have fun with it!

Edit: I still play Half-Life 2 from time to time, and keep it loaded in case I want to try some of the mods. The achievements are really good, and they give me a thin excuse to play when I'm in the mood. "Just having another try with that damn no-stepping-on-the-beach achievement."

Dishonored is one of my favorites. Nice Stealth game.
Shadow Warrior was also pretty fun to play through, if you like the humor.
If you never played Half Life 2, i also recommend playing Black Mesa - a recreation of Half Life 1, it's on Steam right now. It's 85% complete just missing the last chapter that is being worked on. Still fun to play through though.

Anyway, you can't go wrong with most of the titles on your list. Just depends on your personal taste.

The Stanley Parable is a short game, you probably need 3 hours. It's awesome and simple.

To the Moon

One of the few games I pirated, finished, then bought the game on Steam. It's a short narrative story, and amazing.

Portal stories, if you played the other portals, Stanley Parable is only 2-3 hours, you can play that.

Out of the games on your list that I've played I'd say either:

Firewatch - Nice visuals, decent story, nice and short if you're just wanting something quick in between games.

or

Sleeping Dogs: Definitive Edition - I was suprised by how good this game was. Combat is similar to the Batman games and the world and story are really enjoyable!

Spec Ops: the Line (no need to know rest of series), To the Moon (short, but emotionally deep) or Witcher - Enhanced Edition (for start, then go for another 2 parts).

I'll throw a vote in for Trine 2. The fourth games was announced recently and Trine 2 is probably the best in the series so far.
