I just finished playing Borderlands 1 (just in time for the remaster ๐Ÿ™„). Now Iโ€™m looking to play something else before jumping into Borderlands 2, but I have so many games in my backlog I want to play that I canโ€™t make a decision. Thatโ€™s why Iโ€™m looking for your recommendations.

Iโ€™ve pulled out some a mix of the highest rated and most rated games on Steam from my backlog. What should I play next? Why?

Feel free to recommend multiple games and even rank them if you want. Bonus points to games that have great gameplay, an engaging story, and controller support. Also, let me know if any of these games is overrated and I should skip it.

I was going to do a poll, but I had too many for a poll, so I just listed them below.

Update: Thanks to all your responses so far! I just played Refunct and Firewatch and started Hollow Knight based on your suggestions. I added a few more games to the list, so please do keep making recommendations for what to play next.

Dishonored and Deus Ex HR are two of my favourite games, I must have completed both of them about 3 or 4 times.
But I'd play Stanley Parable next, it's unique and really short and I thought it was hilarious, not many games have literally made me laugh out loud.

You should really try Spec Ops: The Line, i played it some years after its realease and it really gave me a strange but amazing impression. But don't check too much about it, you could be spoiled ;). If you play in normal mode, you could finish the game in a session of play or 2.

Note that you should try Dishonored then Shadow of mordor too but these takes more time ^^'.

If you're looking to another short but rich game in story, you should try "The Darkness II", takes only a few hours to finish but my mind was all the time "wtf is happening", i had strange feelings while playing this game but definitively one of my favourite :)

Deus ex for weekend (when you have a lot of time to spend on game and explore and go around the map doing stuff)
Spec ops when you don't have a lot of time or will to explore and just want to go straight for the action (it has good action and hardcore music while in it)
Life is strange for calm and relaxing evenings (At least that's how I played it)
Sadly can not give you any thoughts on other games, as I never played or don't have strong opinion on them. :)

Personally, I'd recommend playing Hollow Knight (one of the best indie games of the last few years), Psychonauts (and grab A Hat in Time while you are at it :D ) and To The Moon (be prepared to cry though) :D

The Stanley Parable - definitely. Something to contrast with the mayhem of Borderlands.

There's a nice list of games there. I only played a few of them. I definitely suggest Deus Ex Human Revolution (great story, good gameplay and very good soundtrack), Life is Strange (nice original gameplay mechanics, strong and touching story, and excellent soundtrack) and Trine 2 (nice soundtrack, good gameplay, probably better when played with friends). Then there's Half-Life 2, solid shooter, which is a must-play, a piece of history.
Have fun and thanks for the giveaways!

Honestly, just go from the top of the list looking at steam gameplay trailers (or simply trailers) and pick the one you like the most right now.

If I hadnt played these before I would choose Firewatch for something short and fast but beautiful
Or Life is Strange. I wanted to play it for a while and loved in when finally got it.

Next on my list would be shadow of mordor or dishonored.. If I hadnt finished them before :D

I've only played Psychonauts and To the Moon, and I'd recommend either, but can't really weigh them against anything else.

You should know that Hitman: Absolution is different from pretty much all the rest of the series. It's more of an action game than the other ones; there's parts where you have to evade cops as part of the larger story and do other stuff as in an action-adventure game, whereas classically Hitman games are a string of missions in which you kill the target in various ways open to you, no other fluff.

My top 3 of these but most of your list are certainly worth playing! I wont mention Firewatch as you just played it :)

Hollow Knight. Superb metroidvenia with original design and (semi) difficult gameplay (The most difficult fights and bosses are mostly optional and are there mostly for the enthousiasts and completionists).

Psychonauts. Old but one of those must have played games. Original with a fun story and good 3d platforming

Dishonored. great game overall with multiple possible approaches, stealth or action, you chose they all go. Great setting and smooth gameplay.

That is quite the list you have there. I've played and enjoyed like half of these games. I'm going to suggest Rakuen for these reasons.
-It's not a very long game so you can still keep your Borderlands experience fresh in your head before going onto Borderlands 2. It took me like 17 hours to beat Rakuen and that is probably on the long side because I like taking my time.
-Rakuen probably has more "feels" than any other game I've ever played. It's charming and cute but at the same time hits hard with some real life issues. This game will definitely make you tear up or outright cry.
-Rakuen has some inspiration from Chrono Trigger and Suikoden which are two of my favorite games ever. Even though there is no combat in this game, some of the artwork and soundtrack definitely has some vibes from those games.
Anyway, I hope you enjoy whatever game you play next and thank you for the train.
