Life Is Strange, because it's my favourite story-based game, and probably in my top 5 of all time. It's a bit slow to get going, but very much worth sticking with.
Stanley Parable is also quite entertaining if you're looking for something shorter.
The Witcher is also a really great game. I've considered replaying it multiple times, and I rarely replay games.

So games I enjoyed and can absolutely recommend:
Batman
Deus Ex
Hitman (in fact I started with Absolution and am in love ever since)
Dishonored
Life is Strange (!)
Middle-earth
Game I only played to know what's it about and so I can at some point played the third:
The Witcher
But compared with the others, I really wasn't happy with it. I never rly got warm with Geralt, the game is old and you can feel it. And even though I'm sure it is, it's apparently not about how many girls you can get in bed with as Geralt. o.O
Hope you find something good :)

i recommend saints row as you never played saints row before and saints row 3 is the best part of saints row (at least in my eyes). plenty much fun and from time to time something to laugh about. and btw since last year it has now workshop with mods. maybe i would recommend to play this game with a controller, but also works without.

Mirror's Edge - amazing game
Trine 2: Complete Story and Saints Row: The Third - nice choice for playing with friend
The Witcher: Enhanced Edition - atmospheric, unusual and magical game with interesting story, however the graphics are a bit outdated...

Started playing the Witcher recently and it's a great game. Recommend it, but be warned, it grips and won't let you go easy.
HL2 can seem a little disappointing as it's praised really high. Beaten it twice, it's a solid game, but nowhere near as good as people make it out to be.

While there are a lot of good choices in your list, I am picking Life is Strange.
This game hit me very hard emotionally, and I got invested in the characters and what they were going through. I don't want the story to end, so I have yet to complete the final episode! I really should, however. Even though I was spoiled a long time ago...
And this is a game you need to avoid spoilers for!!! Go in blind, and play it. If you choose this game, I'd be interested in hearing your thoughts about certain events in the game, and the game itself!:)
Not to mention, the soundtrack for the game is excellent!!

i would stay with short games to give a chance to more games
Stanley shouldn't take more than few hours
brothers and life is strange next, rich story and non FPS
then play borderlands
with a side of hollow knight

Play To The Moon (takes only 2-3 hours),
then Half-Life 2 (you have to played it once in your life),
then Stanley Parable (also a short game, that will lighten up your day).

In order I'd say To the moon first, then Rakuen and, finally, Firewatch :)

I just finished playing Borderlands 1 (just in time for the remaster ๐). Now Iโm looking to play something else before jumping into Borderlands 2, but I have so many games in my backlog I want to play that I canโt make a decision. Thatโs why Iโm looking for your recommendations.
Iโve pulled out some a mix of the highest rated and most rated games on Steam from my backlog. What should I play next? Why?
Feel free to recommend multiple games and even rank them if you want. Bonus points to games that have great gameplay, an engaging story, and controller support. Also, let me know if any of these games is overrated and I should skip it.
I was going to do a poll, but I had too many for a poll, so I just listed them below.
Update: Thanks to all your responses so far! I just played Refunct and Firewatch and started Hollow Knight based on your suggestions. I added a few more games to the list, so please do keep making recommendations for what to play next.
The Games
Apotheon
Batman: Arkham City
Brothers - A Tale of Two Sons
Call of Juarez Gunslinger
Deus Ex: Human Revolution - Director's Cut (never played a Deus Ex game)
Dishonored
Distraint
Firewatch(played)Guacamelee! Gold Edition
Half-Life 2 (I know, I know. I should've played this already, but I jump around a lot between types and series of games.)
Hitman: Absolution (never played a Hitman game)
Hollow Knight (playing now)
Hyper Light Drifter
Infinifactory
Lara Croft and the Guardian of Light
Life is Strange
The Messenger
Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor
Mirror's Edge
Out There Somewhere
Overlord
Portal Stories: Mel
Psychonauts
Rakuen
Refunct(played)Resident Evil 5
Saints Row: The Third (never played a Saints Row game)
Shadow Warrior (2013)
Sleeping Dogs: Definitive Edition
Slime Rancher
Spec Ops: The Line (never played a Spec Ops game)
The Stanley Parable
Subnautica
Superflight
The Swapper
To the Moon
Trine 2: Complete Story
Valley
The Witcher: Enhanced Edition
