I just finished playing Borderlands 1 (just in time for the remaster ๐Ÿ™„). Now Iโ€™m looking to play something else before jumping into Borderlands 2, but I have so many games in my backlog I want to play that I canโ€™t make a decision. Thatโ€™s why Iโ€™m looking for your recommendations.

Iโ€™ve pulled out some a mix of the highest rated and most rated games on Steam from my backlog. What should I play next? Why?

Feel free to recommend multiple games and even rank them if you want. Bonus points to games that have great gameplay, an engaging story, and controller support. Also, let me know if any of these games is overrated and I should skip it.

I was going to do a poll, but I had too many for a poll, so I just listed them below.

Update: Thanks to all your responses so far! I just played Refunct and Firewatch and started Hollow Knight based on your suggestions. I added a few more games to the list, so please do keep making recommendations for what to play next.

The Games

Apotheon
Batman: Arkham City
Brothers - A Tale of Two Sons
Call of Juarez Gunslinger
Deus Ex: Human Revolution - Director's Cut (never played a Deus Ex game)
Dishonored
Distraint
Firewatch (played)
Guacamelee! Gold Edition
Half-Life 2 (I know, I know. I should've played this already, but I jump around a lot between types and series of games.)

Hollow Knight (playing now)
Hyper Light Drifter
Infinifactory
Lara Croft and the Guardian of Light
Life is Strange
The Messenger
Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor
Mirror's Edge

I'd say Batman Arkham City (assuming you already played Arkham Asylum)

I'd go for Firewatch or Life Is Strange; always nice to play something different after an FPS.

Thanks for the train.

Life Is Strange, because it's my favourite story-based game, and probably in my top 5 of all time. It's a bit slow to get going, but very much worth sticking with.
Stanley Parable is also quite entertaining if you're looking for something shorter.
The Witcher is also a really great game. I've considered replaying it multiple times, and I rarely replay games.

If you liked Half-Life, Half-Life 2 is a no-brainer. I played also Mirror's Edge, The Swapper and To the Moon and I can recommend all of them, but Half-Life 2 is the best of them.

So games I enjoyed and can absolutely recommend:

Batman
Deus Ex
Hitman (in fact I started with Absolution and am in love ever since)
Dishonored
Life is Strange (!)
Middle-earth

Game I only played to know what's it about and so I can at some point played the third:
The Witcher
But compared with the others, I really wasn't happy with it. I never rly got warm with Geralt, the game is old and you can feel it. And even though I'm sure it is, it's apparently not about how many girls you can get in bed with as Geralt. o.O

Hope you find something good :)

I'd recommend playing Mirror's Edge.

But maybe that's cause I really loved it...

I would recommend (top 3):

Batman: Arkham City
Spec Ops: The Line
Sleeping Dogs: Definitive Edition

These are great games, with engaging story and good gameplay.
Subnautica and Life is Strange are also good games, but not my type of games

I'd say mirror's edge. it's different enough to stand out from all the rest, and short enough you can finish it before Borderlands' remaster comes out.

It's a good game with innovative gameplay that hasn't really aged all that much.

To the Moon - absolutely must play. Awesome music, good jokes, nice story.
But this isn't about gameplay, so for gameplay I would recommend Momodora Hollow Knight.

i recommend saints row as you never played saints row before and saints row 3 is the best part of saints row (at least in my eyes). plenty much fun and from time to time something to laugh about. and btw since last year it has now workshop with mods. maybe i would recommend to play this game with a controller, but also works without.

Bump, I usually play whatever I feel like in that exact moment, and therefore have 1000 installed unfinished games

Started playing the Witcher recently and it's a great game. Recommend it, but be warned, it grips and won't let you go easy.
HL2 can seem a little disappointing as it's praised really high. Beaten it twice, it's a solid game, but nowhere near as good as people make it out to be.

Firewatch is a relaxing game. It could be nice between two Borderlands. The Swaper is no so relaxing, because you use your brain a bit. It could be nice also.

While there are a lot of good choices in your list, I am picking Life is Strange.

This game hit me very hard emotionally, and I got invested in the characters and what they were going through. I don't want the story to end, so I have yet to complete the final episode! I really should, however. Even though I was spoiled a long time ago...

And this is a game you need to avoid spoilers for!!! Go in blind, and play it. If you choose this game, I'd be interested in hearing your thoughts about certain events in the game, and the game itself!:)

Not to mention, the soundtrack for the game is excellent!!

i would stay with short games to give a chance to more games
Stanley shouldn't take more than few hours
brothers and life is strange next, rich story and non FPS
then play borderlands
with a side of hollow knight

Play To The Moon (takes only 2-3 hours),
then Half-Life 2 (you have to played it once in your life),
then Stanley Parable (also a short game, that will lighten up your day).
