I just finished playing Borderlands 1 (just in time for the remaster πŸ™„). Now I’m looking to play something else before jumping into Borderlands 2, but I have so many games in my backlog I want to play that I can’t make a decision. That’s why I’m looking for your recommendations.

I’ve pulled out some a mix of the highest rated and most rated games on Steam from my backlog. What should I play next? Why?

Feel free to recommend multiple games and even rank them if you want. Bonus points to games that have great gameplay, an engaging story, and controller support. Also, let me know if any of these games is overrated and I should skip it.

I was going to do a poll, but I had too many for a poll, so I just listed them below.

Update: Thanks to all your responses so far! I just played Refunct and Firewatch and started Hollow Knight based on your suggestions. I added a few more games to the list, so please do keep making recommendations for what to play next.

The Games

Apotheon
Batman: Arkham City
Brothers - A Tale of Two Sons
Call of Juarez Gunslinger
Deus Ex: Human Revolution - Director's Cut (never played a Deus Ex game)
Dishonored
Distraint
Firewatch (played)
Guacamelee! Gold Edition
Half-Life 2 (I know, I know. I should've played this already, but I jump around a lot between types and series of games.)
Hitman: Absolution (never played a Hitman game)
Hollow Knight (playing now)
Hyper Light Drifter
Infinifactory
Lara Croft and the Guardian of Light
Life is Strange
The Messenger
Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor
Mirror's Edge
Out There Somewhere
Overlord
Portal Stories: Mel
Psychonauts
Rakuen
Refunct (played)
Resident Evil 5
Saints Row: The Third (never played a Saints Row game)
Shadow Warrior (2013)
Sleeping Dogs: Definitive Edition
Slime Rancher
Spec Ops: The Line (never played a Spec Ops game)
The Stanley Parable
Subnautica
Superflight
The Swapper
To the Moon
Trine 2: Complete Story
Valley
The Witcher: Enhanced Edition

Oh, and here’s a choo choo for your two cents.

If you're just interested in the story, then Arkham City is very good and an excellent follow-up to Asylum. However, if you're a 100% kind of player, then there's a huge achievement grind of 40+ hours to do all the challenges FOUR times over (once as Batman, again as Catwoman, yet again as Robin, and guess what - do it again as Nightwing).

Well... Saints Row: The Third is on of my favorite games.
I always go back to it every now and then. So yeah that one :)

My suggestion would be Dishonored. It's one of the best stealth games I've played, really enjoyable gameplay and good replayability with all the different ways there is to play the game. I would also highly recommend Dishonored 2 as well.

i suggest sleeping dogs...played it myself and enjoyed it. my only problem was, that i had such a long break in between, that i totally got out of the story. finished it anyway. it was worth it. you got a kind of gta mixed with nice ma-fighting. the dlc's are meh though. you can have a look into them and see, if you'll enjoy playing them, but i wasn't.

There are some good games in there and I wouldn't argue with any of the previous suggestions, but if you liked the action of Borderlands rather than the looting or co-op play, I'd recommend Shadow Warrior. It is chock full of combat and doesn't take itself at all seriously - it's very self-aware, with a strong 80's feel and a cocky protagonist that makes lame, politically incorrect jokes. It feels a bit like a love letter to the early first-person shooter games like Duke Nukem 3D, transporting you back to a time when heroes openly smoked and scantily clad women could be used to advertise absolutely anything. The trailer gives you a good feel for it:

The Stanley Parable is more of a experience and commentary about gaming as whole than "game". Funny or irritating - I loved it at the beginning but then I hated it xD
It's really short (like 10 minutes) but you have to finish it couple of times to see what's going on ;) Game for one evening.

If you want to kill some time without using too much brain - Saints Row is great. It's like GTA with stupid sense of humor.

Half-Life 2 with no doubts. It's a "must-play" classic.
Shadow Warrior is kind of interesting experience if you like shooters and hack'n'slash games because it's a mix of them. Also it has absurd\ironic humor that I personally really adore.
I can also recommend Hollow Knight. My shame that haven't still finished it, but it's a really superb metroidvania with good progression system, exciting fights and attracting exploration system.
And thanks for the ride!)

The Swapper
The Stanley Parable (after 5 years for the achivement:)
Dishonored- at least 2 times (there is the brutal way to play, and after some time you can try to get achivement "clean hands" finish the game without killing anyone)

I had immense fun with Sleeping Dogs. Spec Ops: The line is decent with some great sequences. Nothing special though.
Many of the other titles are in my backlog and want to get my fingers on them asap

Hitman: Absolution
Since you haven't played a Hitman game, you might actually like it. (It has a few changes that make it a "less of a Hitman game" than the predecessors, so fans of the previous games might not like it.)

Lara Croft and the Guardian of Light
I have played this through with a friend and it was a fun ride. It has a few annoying moments (it can be difficult to jump in the direction you want to jump, or sometimes you burn in a fire trap when there was clearly no fire when you tried to pass) but other than that it's good to pass time. You can also play it solo (although there is a multi player only achievement IIRC) but if you have a friend who also has this game I recommond playing it in multi.
