lol, so easy to work around MSE for malicious people.
Comment has been collapsed.
I've had MSE for 4 years and not a single virus or malicious file of any kind. I guess most viruses are caught by unaware or careless people. Don't visit bad webpages and don't download from shady sites, etc etc.

Half-true nowadays. See my reply to erik19borgnia.

i hope you dont have a SSD cause MSE can cause major issues after a while of use. i went thru that twice and now use AVG
Comment has been collapsed.
That's what you get for using Anti-virus software, which are viruses themselves.
Comment has been collapsed.
Haha seriously? You don't use any security software? That's asinine.
Comment has been collapsed.
No. Regular sites (like Yahoo) have been compromised to download viruses. Many ads (even without clicking on them) can also download packages via your cache.
Comment has been collapsed.
All you need is Microsoft Security Essentials. Other anti-virus software does nothing but cause problems and hog resources, slowing down your computer (and games).
Comment has been collapsed.
MSE is the easiest software to work around. 90% of viruses aren't affected by it.
Comment has been collapsed.
Just because you haven't had one doesn't mean you won't ever. And MSE? Think about it. You're designing a virus for Windows. You want to hit as many people as possible. What anti-virus solution is the one you can guarantee nearly everyone has? So which one do you build a workaround for? Exactly.
Especially since free solutions like Avast use pretty much no resources to keep running. And it has a gaming mode to keep things quiet while you're busy kicking ass.

Portal 2 would open backdoors in your operating system :P
Comment has been collapsed.
How is that possible? Maybe you have Norton set up all wrong. I've been using Norton for YEARS and never had such problem. But I always configure it manually with close attention to detail so ;P
Comment has been collapsed.
Oh and I love all those experts speaking shit about Norton and I bet most of them haven't even used it to begin with. SMH.
Comment has been collapsed.
.. Norton has been shit since Norton 360. Some would argue before that. Far too many false positives, bad detection rates for actual malware compared to other programs, and most versions seem impossible to uninstall. Removing Norton and reverting all things it changes during its' install / operation is like fighting off deeply rooted malware. Norton Ghost, that's a good program when you're managing a network, but AV? Hell no. Never again.
Comment has been collapsed.
I'm using 360 but every year I buy a new version. Like I said, I can't complain. I used various anti-virus software in the past and Norton is the best so far. Doesn't slow down anything, detects all viruses and trojans whenever they try to get in (I even tested that for myself) and false positives? You mean through SONAR? It does it based on "user usage" so when an .exe file hasn't been used by many people yet it will flag it as suspicious. But you can decide to leave the file on the hard drive anyway with just one click, yeah, that's tons of work indeed. At top of that SONAR can be deactivated anyway. Like I said, it's all in the settings, you can make it very efficient if you want but you actually need to spend time on it.

"Norton (...) Doesn't slow down anything"
Are you a wizzard?
Comment has been collapsed.
Oh I have, why do you assume such? Been using PC's for 15+ years, I have used it all, Norton is shit.

Free AV software is better than Norton, like Panda AV or Ad-Aware.
Comment has been collapsed.
Last time I used Panda a few years back it sucked and was very CPU consuming. Not to mention it would scan .exe files for hours. When I entered a DVD I would have to wait like an hour before it ended scanning everything. And Ad-Aware is not even an AV lol. It's good as an addition to an AV program but good luck using only Ad-Aware and nothing else.
And free AV software sucks. Especially Avast which so many people use.

"Especially Avast which so many people use."
Lol no, gotta link this to my friends that work in the tech field, they will laugh.

Uninstall Norton, install Malwarebytes Anti-Malware.
It's a win-win.
Comment has been collapsed.
Malwarebytes has issues with w8 like freezing etc. (x64 one)

MBAM isn't primarily meant to protect against viruses / trojans, but more against spyware. Also, the free version has no real-time protection. Using only MBAM isn't secure.

I got AVG from here, AVG is good but one annoying thing when Windows 8 updates it doesn't detect your update, it continue asking to restart computer to update even if you did it, but is still good, others are more annoying, I got it from here sharewareonsale 1 year version for free, I'm subscribed to their emails, they post free promotions for software, sometimes is useful.
Bitdefender 2015 was on free promo until yesterday.

Even if you are using AVG or any other antivirus, make sure the game folders are in av's exception list.

Uninstall Norton. Don't install any antivirus software. Why would you need them anyway? What kind of places are you going to on the internet? Virus won't enter your PC from the air... Nor even from a pen drive if you have a bit of caution before opening it...

Anybody clicks on the ads??? o.o
Edit: Now in a month my computer will have 2 years old. I NEVER used an antivirus, and I have no regrets. And I haven't got a virus.
Comment has been collapsed.
How do you know you haven't got a virus if you have never used an anti-virus to check, it's like saying that despite having loads of unprotected sex with a stack of prostitutes you have never caught an sti and you know this because you have never been tested.

Its funny, I had a friend who said the same as thins guy, ran a couple scans on his computer, he had a couple pages worth of spyware and a couple viruses, he also thought his PC got slower over time because he used it more and just needed to replace parts.
-_-.
Comment has been collapsed.
Well, they do get slower if you don't clear your cache, and normal wear-and-tear can make an HD or CPU slower. But then again he had a lot of viruses, so that probably wasn't a problem.

Also don't wear a condom, because if you know your partner there is totally no chance of getting them pregnant or catching an std, also share needles because sharing is caring.
This has been an announcement by your center committee.
No but really I know people who are extremely safe and still get viruses from sites like CNN and Facebook. Also if you have one you can actually browse the net and not go nuts worrying if the next site you click on has a virus.

Google the following terms, please. "Drive-by download", "hidden i-frame / deadly pixel", "XSS attack", "SQL injection", "session hijack". "Being smart" about your computer use hasn't been an effective way to protect yourself online since the mid-90's.

LOL! Change one bad AV for another just as bad. Nice advice.

Virus Bulletin and AVTest would disagree with you.

Considering they also give high praises to McAfee and Norton... I can't really take them that seriously.
From personal experience, Bitdefender has been the worst piece of software I ever had the displeasure of installing on my home network. Crashing at random on all the computers, deleting important email messages from our inboxes even with the email scanner turned off. It also blanked IE start page at every false positive (and God there were many) and not allowing me to set it back until I rebooted my PC. (Forum post dating years back about this issue and how it would be fixed shortly.) I'm only glad I got it for pennies on their promo because even for free that POS would still be overpriced.
