This is quickly becoming one of the worst events in the history of Steam. If boost capacity doesn't reset daily there is no salvaging it.
But hey, at least we get a 1:20,000,000 chance to win a free game.

I think EGS h4x0r3d Steam.
I don't understand this game.
Worst event/sale ever.
Why do I have negative tokens?
Is this an out of season April Fool's joke?
It's okay, I like it.

Considering I leveled up from 48 (technically 41 if you count in the fuckup they had with the Chinese new year sale) to 81 for basically free I can't complain at all. But I also don't care about the rest of the event and winning those free games.

Like everyone else; using boosters to get tokens. But some start off with like a hundred and some (like me) with 1. It seems pretty messed up.

  1. join a team
  2. make sure you have points on your odometer (you might have to wait a day or buy more games to get some, admittedly I spent 130€ on this sale and my balance was bugged due to Chinese New Year sale, that is why I had so many points to use up)
  3. scroll down to "Play Any Game With Steam Achievements" and select any that has any points and redeem them
  4. Spam the "Boost team" button till you use up all the points you got
  5. click "Make a pit stop" button and spent all the tokens you got on the badge

I hope that makes it a bit clearer, if you have any more questions just ask :) I am level 87 already now \o/

From my understanding if the red number is 0 you either have to wait for day 2 of the event or spend more money, if the white one is 0 you have to play more games with achievements and redeem those points under "Play Any Game With Steam Achievements".

Oh now I understand. THX a lot Mouse <3

Btw I don't know if you remember but you talked about how I should visit Bohin when I go to Slovenia well we were going to but the snow around May caught us on the way to Bohin and it was snowed in you couldn't see a finger 10 meters in front of you so we only saw Bled XD

P.S. I hope I am not mixing up people here :D

P.S.S And the red number from the pic is going up if I spend money only?
But I just used the boost and both red and the white number went down, so confusing O.o

No problem ^^

I told that same exact thing to many people before so I have no idea if you were one of them because in addition to that I also have goldfish memory D: sorry. We had absolutely awful weather the whole April and May :/ Hope you enjoyed your time over here anyways!

From what I understood reading their FAQ that red number should go up at 7PM (UTC +2) again, but don't quote me on it. It does 100% go up if you spend money. Yup, which is really dumb, but otherwise it would be open to a whole bunch of other exploits.

I did enjoy it, and got lucky that the bad weather only caught me on the last day of my stay and maybe a few hours on the day before :)

Yeah I got the same feeling that the red number goes up at 7PM it just confused me why my went down with the white number when I used the boost XD

I am glad ^^

The red number is kinda the max boost you can use in total and the while one is kinda like the boost you have redeemed for the "activities" if that makes more sense :)

It makes sense but why does the red go down with white one that is the confusing part at least for me XD

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Because it is not the max number of points you can have at any given time (like 400 is on SG), but it is the max amount of points you can still use in the future (like you get paid 5000€ each month and that is all you can use till the next month comes and you get another 5000€ you can use up again). It would have been a lot less confusing if they did it the other way indeed.

I've read the damn thing 3 times and I'm still not understanding how any of this works. Besides, team corgi is at 4000 points/boosts/whatevers compared to other teams at 130, is there even a point in choosing a different team?

Oh, so we all see the same team scores then? I thought there were 1000s of groups of smaller teams, and that Corgi was only winning like that in my group. Definitely not a fully tested model :D

I joined Pig, there seems to be no way to win though. Without some balancing mechanic it looks like team Corgi was a bit ahead at start and then everyone coming after piled on it in avalanche mode. So there are probably like 5 million players in team Corgi and a few thousand in the others? :V

Buy games during the sale (something like 100 points per dollar). You'll also get +100 capacity every day.

Shouldn't it let you to fill the capacity and forfeit the excess though?

VERY convoluted (the original text managed to get terms muddled up which should tell you everything) but an interesting way to encourage early purchases. Do early purchases to have high max capacity to do more boosts which gives you more tokens to buy vouchers (or powerlevel your steam account; more on that later). It is a shame the implementation is imbalanced and a buggy mess (I've seen people with negative capacity and having less capacity than Steam said they would have).
Edit: I made the assumption capacity resets daily which is spreading misinformation about this mess. It just occurred to me that it may not in which case I'll refund the games I bought for capacity and completely ignore this sale.
Edit2: Since I only have 100 capacity today it looks like once capacity is used it's gone for good so refunds requested and I'll wait for the last race.

The play game parts are poorly balanced. I can get 1000s of points from games with steam achievements but I might have to idle for 30 minutes to get the option (or to even see how much I can cash in) or I try and get 170 points from play say, Wargroove and hoping I win an online match (otherwise, it is 100 points) which in the end might not even register and could take 15-20 minutes of active play. Why do the latter?

Correct me if I'm wrong but in the summer camp weren't you assigned to random teams to avoid a situation of everybody joining the same team like seems to have occurred here with Corgi (non-corgi picks have a much higher chance of winning anything by being a second or third place team but the non-corgi teams are too close for comfort here).

When the news of no trading cards came live I remember somebody who was happy because they spent a lot of money to get to level 200 in 2015 (or something like that) and they saw these previous sales as making it too cheap and easy to reach such levels (i.e. powercreep; they were being overtaken by people who spent a fraction of what they did). Wonder what they think of this where I can spend $10 and at the end of the sale have enough tokens to gain over 30 levels (provided I fill/use my boost meter every day). But given the bottleneck here is boost capacity which can only be increased via Steam purchases in Valves mind that gets the bots and the black market out of the equation (which I think is what Valve really disliked about the Winter sale).

I also speculate about how the vouchers are being handled. It is suspicious that a number of games have missed this sale despite never missing sales before (e.g. NieR:Automata, DG2).

Yeah, you are correct, the Summer Camp event did put people in random teams (I know that because I ended up in Team Pink, I would never choose pink haha). Seems like Valve had a somewhat decent formula, but decided to scrap it and create something inferior.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Pretty sure you could actually pick, and when it became too onesided they added a powerup to allow people to shift teams, making Valve a bit of money of people mass swapping to the winning team of the day.

Also 30 levels? People have gained 20000 levels (past highest level being 5000). Things are a major mess now.

Seems like it's totally buggy on all ends to me.

  • I started off having -4400 Token (yup, negative... just like for many others)
  • Completing tasks for Stardew Valley doesn't count toward the event although I finished several ingame days, harvested hundreds of crops, fished like 200 fish and killed loads of monsters by playing it for several hours
  • I can't claim achievement points although my box stop tells me I had a capacity of 5000 and the steam help center tells me I spent way more than 1500$ total directly on Steam (not gonna say the real number, but yeah, it's much more)
  • today's purchases also didn't upgrade the capacity but provided an additional Nitro boost instead
  • you could basically claim points for a game that you completed already by letting it run idle for 30 minutes. I own Rocket League with 71/88 achievements done. After "idling" it for 30 minutes it would grant me 28866 points without actually doing something. (which I can't redeem due to previously mentioned bug tho)

In total quite a bummer. But hey, atleast I joined Team Corgi at the start of the event which seems to be the winning one by now. Actually I just joined it at that time 'cause I was like "Okay, there's no cat. Guess it's the corgi then." <.<

I think there's some interesting ideas in the event, but they obviously totally screwed the implementation because people managed to exploit it so insanely, and that aside - I have never seen such a profoundly incoherent "explanation" for any such event on any website in the past... Really, staggeringly poor.

On the bright side, lots of very reasonable prices for indies I was keeping an eye on 👍

Permalink

They are not obliged to give games for free, it's just bonus.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

The market value of ten thousand of those Kinguin keys is probably around the market value of 100 keys Valve will send out in one day, considering Kinguin peddles away mostly one-dollar asset flip "games", Steam users now will get the top wishlist one, regardless of what that is.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

The list of the game offered by Kinguin is available on the topic dedicated to their Crazy Weekend giveaways, those may not be top games released this year, but they aren't one-dollar asset flip "games" either.
I am surprised that Valve only gives so few keys over such short span of time, that without forgetting that most of people don't organize their wishlist as stated someone else previously. Considering how big Valve is next to Kinguin and how many customers they brace compared to that shop, they would have the possibility to give at least as much as Kinguin every day.
Now as said my partner, "it doesn't matter how much games they give away, people will buy from them anyway."

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

True, in a sense, but don't forget that Kinguin as a grey market site operates at nearly 100% profit margins. As much as Valve has (and tended to brag about), even their profit margin rates are nowhere near to that. Just like with the old G2A sponsorships, it is easy to look generous when you have next to zero costs and your service is based on taxing the business deals of others with as many immorally hidden fees as possible.
To put it simply, as much money Valve will get in this sale, I wouldn't be surprised if they will spend a higher percentage of that on giveaways as Kinguin spent money on those giveaway keys.

And on a related note, Valve can still go and fuck itself for their greediness.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

I agree with you at 100% I do have the same feeling as you have, that Valve is really greedy.
Nothing is perfect, of course, but I often have the feeling that often opinions are really biased towards Valve. I avoided speaking of another shop and their sale which lasted over a month without needing to engage in a game to have a bigger discount because it would certainly go to flames. Kinguin felt less dangerous while relevant as well.
Thanks for answering nicely by the way, it's always nice to have a civil conversation even if opinions aren't the same :) !

I don't see the need to criticize the event too much, it's not like you're losing anything by participating or are required to participate.

What I don't like is the fact that the Pit Stop page says "Your account received 2,000 Boost Meter capacity based on your previous spend on Steam", but I only got 387, and keep hearing about people starting off with like 50000.

Negative feedback is just as important as the positive one, though. Nothing would ever improve if people didn't voice their complaints :) You are right that at least we aren't missing out on anything if we don't participate, though.

I joined team, clicked boost since why not, got 157 tokens and seemingly incapable to spend more till tomorrow as achievement refuse to fill. 4000 initial tokens? Nope. Pit stop claims I can get 57 more tokens racing but I don't see how.

This has got to be the most confusing buggy thing Valve released yet.

Big wall of text. Went through it twice. I still don't get what I'm supposed to do. I don't want to play their "F2P" wargames so I opted for the "play any game you have and earn points for your achievements" option.... and I got zero points for my achievements.
I applaud their effort to try and make the "event" a more involving and social game event but they fumbled it.

No idea, but basically started the event with 80+ boosts available. Could be because I did not spend any Lunar points, and it's mentioned that those carried over. East boost gives 1000 points, and 15000 points gives $5 voucher.

unfortunately I started out in die minus 7k but had like 11 boosts and could only earn coins once i got out of the negative. This whole event is so complicated and random lol. But at least some people are bargaining out of it (I am not one of those people hahah)

This event rewards people who use Steam Achievement Manager to hack in-game statistics. Then it makes all those 100+ steam level holders look stupid because Steam XP is basically free now. Then we have this bug that allowed people to get level 25000+ (and then Valve bans them MANUALLY, what a joke). *Not to mention how overly complicated this event is, could be MUCH simplier.

I've had -1000 tokens at the start, now just -63 after the boost. This event is just a buggy mess.
People with large boost capacity can just hack achievements and get boost points for that, then use boost to get tokens, then use tokens to level up. They wont get punished and it's basically free Steam XP for them. Only 5000+ levels will be punished because they use different abuse.

Actually, it will reward only those who spent large sum of money buying games in Steam store and microtransactions via Steam. For example, my screen in Grand Prix for CS:GO achievments.

https://ibb.co/Z2bnHy9
To get them all I have to spend more than 200€ in Steam store which I am not able to nor I want to.
Not sure why it don't show other games with achievments I've played recently (in last two months).

To be honest, I've spent 10€ in this sale and I've bought NWN:EE, BG:EE and BG2:EE in April for arount 15€. Maybe thanks to that I was able to be able to accumulate boost and get rewarded with tokens enough for level 19. I hope I will be able to level up badge more without having to spent 200€ but I will know for sure tonight.

Too bad they didn't add some rewards for crafting game badges.

Oh, it's actually even more broken. Boost meters supposed to be up to 5000 based on previous spendings. But for some reason people received 15000+ odometer on first day. Maybe it's currency issue or something else. I have no idea know how Valve is planning to sort that out because it opens many possibilities.
