Maybe I'm living under a rock, but... what hysteria?

Yeah, I vaguely heard about it. It seems there's a mod for Arma 2 where you have to survive a realistic zombie apocalypse or such. And it seems to be all the rage right now.

a week ago every game news site started talking about it. Now a few of them have repeating articles about the authors adventures. also the number of servers has like tripled or quadrupled during that week and by the looks of it is gonna keep going.
Whether this continues depends on how rocket handles it and how many new features he adds to stop people from getting bored. Though I know the PvP is killing it for a lot of people. The "larger audience" came in and just started shooting everyone as if the game was a deathmatch simulator, and this is annoying the shit out of the people who have been playing since it was nice and quiet and you only had to worry about the occasional bandit.

What makes you think the apocalypse won't be a deathmatch?

its ok it brings business to them to put into the new arma (Owned arma 2 since it came out) There is alot more room for improvement. Wish they would get their own engine and make a real game and not a mod.

I just need Arma II and the expansion.
Oh and a proper PC to run the damn thing. Heh. But it does look great. It might cool down later, but it will probably keep followers

I'm glad that Bohemia Interactive gets some attention thank to it (playing their games since 2001, at least these which my hardware can run, haha), however I heard that DayZ pretty much wiped all players from other multiplayer game modes atm.

Can barely run ARMA II on my laptop, if I can get a new one, or upgrade the graphics card I will more than likely buy it. Looks like it may get hyped up like Minecraft, but hopefully it will last.

Try looking for some tweaks online. The game itself is not very well optimzed but the engine is old, by changing some values here and there and doing some things like defrags you'll have it running fairly smoothly on the right settings.

It looks amazing but alas, I do not own ARMA 2 :(

Depends on your definition of zombies. Zombies don't necessarily mean that the victim is dead per se. When you talk about the undead/walking dead, then THESE zombies are supposed to the slow, decaying, shambling monsters you speak of. Necrosis and rigor mortis are what disables them to merely shambling.
Fast zombies are technically still "alive" in the sense that their brains never shut down, they just turned crazy and violent. These can starve to death given enough time.

You need Operation Arrowhead to play it. I'm passing on it until it's discounted and the mod itself has fewer bugs and such.

Quick question: can I make my own server to play alone or with friends, or do I need to go on their own servers?

I love it. Always was a hardcore realism gamer. I like playing games since I can feel immersed, and DayZ is by far the most immersive game experience I've had.
The constant updates will probably be good for the lifetime of the game. It's only in Alpha and already picked up quite a bit of popularity, which Rocket said in an interview himself that he didn't expect. Also, ARMA is now on the top sellers of steam quite consistently, so I can safely say that a lot of players are getting invested into it, which means there will be a large playerbase which to shrink from. Every game's playerbase shrinks, and the larger playerbase you have the longer the game will probably last for.

There is a WIP called The Dead Linger which is a zombie sandbox project.

Lot of my friends have been playing it together and are giving great reviews. I really want to give it a go but I haven't got the funds to justify buying ARMA itself and the expansion pack just yet. :( Hopefully it'll come down in summer sales.
