Why do all the cartoons today have such an "isolated" episodic format? I remember Avatar: The Last Airbender, a show that had a clear plot, evolving characters, and constant forward progression.
Naruto did too, but that was anime. I'm talking about western shows.
Edit: To be fair, I guess Avatar was kind of exceptional. Adventure Time would still be so much better if it was structured like that. It is a little bit, but seasons are mostly random with only a few meaningful plot-related episodes.

I think TV shows, especially those aimed at a younger audience, perform better with an isolated format. That way, if an episode is missed, the next one isn't confusing. I think it is perfect with Adventure Time. I enjoy progressive stories as well, but each have their place.

If you like Adventure Time, I highly recommend Bravest Warriors

I thought it was pretty neat show. It was the first new cartoon on Cartoon Network that made me smile in years. While I enjoy Adventure Time I do like Pen's show Bravest Warriors more. I'm also really excited for Bee and PuppyCat as it reached its kickstarter goal. I think it has the potential to become a wonderful series.

The first time I saw it, I absolutely hated it, but only because I thought it was going to be similar to MLP and one of these new kid shows which I believe are terrible in comparison to the quality of kids cartoons from the 90s and early 2000s.
I was wrong. So wrong.
My friend showed me the error of my ways and even showed just how close my life is to that of Finn's...since then, absolutely addicted to it. Only problem is that Cartoon Network in Australia doesn't broadcast them in any kind of order. One day it'll show episode 10 from season 3, then the next day it'll show the second episode of season two. So, I've had to rely on DVDs on such thus far.
Don't spoil!

Adventure time is such a good show. I reckon it's more for teenagers as some of the stuff implied is more relateable to a late teen audience also.

For those that find the show shallow and childish:
Making your way in the world today
Takes everything you've got.
Taking a break from all your worries
Sure would help a lot.
Wouldn't it be nice to get away?
Where everybody knows your name.
Where everybody...

Adventure Time
The Regular Show
Teen Titans Go
Fairly Oddparents
Johnny Test
Avatar: The Last Airbender
Power Puff Girls
When there are young kids in the house, you find yourself introduced to a lot of TV shows. My initial reaction to all of these has pretty much been this.

LOL!
Actually, all of the shows I listed above were entertaining once I got past the first fifteen seconds of watching them. About Avatar, I bought the entire boxed set and am waiting for them to release "Legend of Korah" as a set so I can buy that one. As for TTG, that one is especially weird, but in a good way.

Most of the new animations I have been introduced to lately seem to geared towards pot smokers... at least someone not in their "right " mind. At least that is from my perspective, although I never used it myself, but know many who have. And am a fan of Cheech & Chong / That 70's Show... so I can only assume.

That's pretty short sided, guess all children are pot smokers....

Well, I can understand how children would like many of the cartoons, but I am hearing about them from (excited) adults. Like the Regular Show, Adventure Time... and I do not understand the whole "Brony" concept. Unless under some kind of influence.
Oh, and these adults do not have children / younger siblings.

Well just because you grow up does not mean you can't appreciate or enjoy cartoons, I mean most of the people I know in the 20's enjoy them and most don't smoke pot actually, also the people making these cartoons put in two different elements now(Adult subliminal touches almost), if you notice many times the adult is laughing at different times then the child, this started around the time Ren and Stimpy was out and rolled off onto shows like Spongebob and now shows like Adventure Time and Regular Show.
Just putting that there....
