I got God Mode today and played for a while. After closing the game, I checked my hardware monitor and it showed the GPU (Nvidia GTX 460) had reached 83 degrees celcius. Would you suggest increasing the fan(s) speed, or turning down some graphics options?

Edit: Turning on a fan in my room aimed at the computer area kept everything down to 75 last playthrough, though I will still be working on the auto adjustment portion and confirming HW Monitor's assessment of the GPU temp...Thanks for the ideas and advice!

I don't believe in lesser graphics, unless you have no choice. I would always go with increased cooling until you get to a point where cooling no longer works, then you can start turning stuff down.

83c is nowhere near "frying" territory.

Do you have a sofware that adjusts the cooler automatically? Usually this type of software is on the driver CD.

I use EVGA Precision X software, but I think I might need to redo some settings as I reformatted recently...

  1. Check with several monitors. Some aren't really accurate (HW monitor says my current CPU temp is 127°c. It isn't, it's 33°c)

  2. Try increasing fan speed, but not too much. They usually run at slower speed (depends but check it!)

  3. Change paste.

You know that's within specifications, right? And your card is older anyway.

I'm using 9800gt PE (lite) edition and temps do not go over 60°c under heavy load so... besides 460 isn't THAT old. It's like 3 years old...

My 6870 gets into the 80's regularly on load at auto fan speed. It's not a problem. The higher it gets, the more the auto adjustment will deal with it.

Ramp up the fan speed to max and make sure that your graphics card isn't clogged with dust.

Never go full max on anything (with the exception of case fans) since you're risking of damaging your components. And no, I'm not shitting you.

Never seen this game, so as people mentioned that might be normal for this situation. But if this temperature is a lot higher than you see for similar games, perhaps vsync is off and your 460 is running (needlessly) as fast as it possibly can. Any idea what fps you're getting in the game, or what sort of gpu utilisation?

I'd say if you are getting 200 fps (for example) turn on vsync and let your card relax. But if it's struggling even to reach 60 turn down some things. Good luck. :)

edit: Aha, you're using evga precision thing, you can use that to display the fps and the gpu utilisation. That will help you decide if this is normal or not.

Check your heat sink(replace it if needed) and cable management. It could be something is loose or what not. If everything is top notch then turn down the graphic settings would be better than turning the fan speed. Plus you also save your graphic card's life span.

I suggest upgrading your card to one that comes with a good cyclone your card could be at the end of its lifespan. MSI makes cards that come with a extremely good heatsink called the cylcone. At 650ti runs about 150$, might come with a game and runs quiet & cool.

650TI would be a downgrade or at the very least a sidegrade.

Try taking the heat sink and GPU apart and clean up the dust (If there is any) and replace the thermal paste . that would be the first thing I'll do and pretty much the cheapest. if the problem continues get a water cooling system no point to settle for lower performances.... at least in my opinio
