What's most important for you in an indie game?
I love indies - for every AAA game that is compelling for me, I found 10 or more indies to play. I just love how original (good) indies are, or at least were - I hope they won't turn into schematics and copied over and over.
The most important for me is their originality, to do something new, or do the usual stuff in some unusual way. Sadly this is the pitfall of many, because games need at least an " acceptable" gameplay and usable presentation/controls to not to utterly suck.
For example Enter the Gungeon has incredible, stunning design and creativity to it, but if it would have sticky, laggy controls and badly balanced, it would only be on the promising, but disappointing games' list.
Overall, I think a good indie has to do something new, or do something outstandingly well while being consistently good on other fronts to be really good in general. Personal taste and a bit of forgiveness can soften this even more (The Last Door is a really cool, creepy story, but even friends who like pixel art a lot said that it is the example of being "too simple", while I'm more forgiving about it)

I have to agree, I quite like innovative ideas, but more often than not, indies only get as far as an idea, and then don't put enough work into executing that idea properly. I played so many games on Steam, that had amazing potential, but fell just short in the gameplay or graphics department.
Superhot would a great example for the exception. That game had a unique mechanic and the devs executed amazingly.

I really love indie games. Not just because they're indie but because devs usually try different things in this kind of games. Different stories, different mechanics... They're usually short games and that's perfect for me because I don't have so much time to play. The first thing I do is look for a video. If the game makes me feel fine, I try to play it

Originality, and that quality of something interesting that stands out, done well in an overall good game, is what I look for. However, shortcomings in terms of graphics or polish can be overlooked if a game is unique and original, which is what indie games have the potential to be that AAA games don't seem to do as well. Atmosphere and narrative play into this heavily, but it's probably the core idea of the game that is most important; I chose innovation in the poll. Gameplay has a baseline kind of importance in general, so I never know what to make of that word, but walking simulators and narrative-driven games are fine by me. It's just a different kind of gameplay...
Indies often are ambitious in the design of the game, combining genres and/or producing something you haven't come across before.
Another thing that indies do well is exploration.

Well, most of the indie games are gameplay related stuff like "Forager" which I supported via Patreon. Beside that in some cases art is more important to me than the story itself. I can't enjoy a good story if art and gameplay are almost so bad it hurts.
Just look at Hyper Light Drifter, Moon Hunters, Rivals of Aether or Ori and the Blind Forest. There are so many awesome indie titles out there, you just need to keep your eyes wide open. :3

File size. non-indie games take up way too much space on my SSD :p

First it needs to be a genre I'm interested in
Then, innovation, gameplay, atmosphere, graphics. Probably in that order.
Its always better to have pixel graphics than some ugly 3d models.

Innovation is most important for me. But without decent execution ideas are worth nothing. I like building/simulation games, like Factorio, Rimworld, Banished, Prison Architect. In that genre innovations are very important, although not necessary. I don't like platformers and stuff like that, if I did I would probably vote something else, like athmosphere or narrative.

I enjoy more indie titles of late over AAA games. Looking through my Steam library and games played recently, it also agrees.
What I like most about them is their story telling, and often times unique gameplay and visuals.
I've backed a few kickstarter games as well, although they take also take 2+ years to materialise, they're often worth the wait.

Congratulations for your milestone and thanks for the GAs.
To answer your question, sometimes it's for their narrative, sometimes their gameplay, often for price\entertainment ratio. But it's always about being innovative, creative, with all the risks involved. And I'm referring to indie developers in general, including those that reach bigger producers while still maintaining their creative independence (for example DONTNOD with LiS, or even Valve with the first HL).
I really like how games like Braid, Amnesia, Limbo or Super Meat Boy among others, along with platforms like Steam and Humble Bundle (and YouTubers with their playthroughs), literally opened the gate to a whole new world of possibilities in gaming, as I remember back in the day how damn hard was to find weird indie games to try...

Well, here we go again, another milestone reached, 10 000 games (and DLCs) filtered.
It's funny considering Steam just reached its 30k milestone just a few days ago.
The last time we did this, I asked about what you look at first on the Steam store page of a game, now it's time for something a bit more controversial:
Indie games
I quite like smaller titles, but I'm interested what you think of the genre.
What do you find most appealing in an indie game?
What do you consider before purchasing an indie game?
I tried to list a few things in the poll, if you have something different in mind the comment section is waiting!
And of course, some GAs! Look twice:)
Level 0
Level 1
Level 2
Level 3
Level 4
Level 5
...finally some public GAs:
Sith Lords
No Sith Lords
