Well, with the end of the Steam Summer sale, and with everyone fresh out of money, there's nothing much to do but play those games.

... Or so I thought.

GamersGate, which is an incredible website owned by a great company (Okay, they're owned by Paradox Interactive and I love them for their outstanding Grand Strategy games that, honestly, nobody else has tried making. Probably has to do with simulating 800 years of world history), is still having their sales.

If you're impatient, go right over here for some great titles (new titles every day!)

If you wanna know a little more about it, here's what I gathered:

  • basically every 24 hours there's four games that get a heavy discount
  • every week for 4 weeks, there's a new genre of games being discounted. This week it's RPG games and my thought is there's gonna be strategy, action, and possibly sports (that or adventure games).
  • apparently they give you hints about what the next games will be. However as of right now the message hasn't been updated yet and it's still hinting the games from yesterday (the Stealth-action RPG is Alpha Protocol, and I don't remember the rest). I plan on getting more games there, and I thought it would be nice if we could discuss the hints so that those of us who plan on buying know what to expect.
  • not all games are redeemable on Steam. Most of them are DRM-free though, which means you could hypothetically get them with a friend and split the costs. However I don't know if Gamersgate permits this. Some are Steam redeemable, such as The Last Remnant, discounted today.
  • By buying from Gamersgate, you also make Blue Coins, which in turn can be reinvested on the website to buy games for free.
  • On the main page, there's a banner under that currently says "2K games summer sales". A few hours ago, it said "Dragon Age complete pack" or something like that. I suppose they're also part of the sale but since they're not listed, it's harder to find them. If anybody has more info on how to find these great packs without having to scroll through the whole website, I'm taking. You can also look at the offers

This bit here is also about Gamersgate, but mainly it's about 1C and the new IndieGala. What's happening is IndieGala is featuring a great bundle with games from 1C only, and while 1C has a lot of shitty games, they also have a pack at 100€ (discounted at 20€ from 1100€ a few months ago) containing almost every one of their game. That's a total of 82 games, and about 40 of them are good to great.

For the price, it's a great deal and I recommend it to everybody mainly because, seriously, which other publisher would do such a thing? A current comparison would be the Quakecon bundle going on Steam. The normal price is 500$, it's going for a 100$ too (so it's 50% the discount of the 1C pack) and you mostly get games from the past decade. They might be classics, but they're certainly not worth 10€ each anymore.

For the trivia, 1C is actually quite big in Russia and their main trade is business software, so I guess they can afford a huge sale on their games. But still, the great series like AIM, Men of War, Death to Spies, King's Bounty and Space Rangers make the pack worth it even for 100€. The 40 other games are icing on the cake. Who knows, it might even be discounted again.

The pack is available here

They're not owned by Paradox for a while now.

Hmm, Wikipedia tells me it became its own company in 2008, but I don't think they completely separated Paradox from Gamersgate, that would be like giving your house to a complete stranger, if you see where I'm going.

I'm actually interested in getting more info on this.

Some. If a game can be activated on Steam that is noted at DRM.

Thanks for taking care of this. I just don't have the patience anymore... I explained in my post that some of the games were redeemable too :(

Thaks for heads up, they should just be more clear about what is steam redeemable and what is not

They couldn't be more cleared. Click game - if it says "can be activated on Steam" under DRM, then it's Steam redeemable.

Well they are competition to Steam ;)

But otherwise the game's page (if you're looking at a pack, you'll have to open up every single game) has the info, right below the pictures, on the right side of the screen. If the DRM is Steamworks, then you get a Steam key.

They changed the hint! It now reads:

"For the deals of tomorrow, grab your friends, put on your robes and take them on a magick adventure! After that it\'s time to stalk the deadly shadows, pick a couple of locks and ingeniously secured residences."

This can only mean two things:

  • Magicka (possibly the complete pack? Playing this game with friends is pure bliss)
  • Thief: Deadly Shadows (and the two other games would be the first and second instalments). The Thief series is great too, and even though the graphics are outdated the engine was and still is great. Enemies react like humans do and honestly I haven't seen a stealth game that comes even close.

I just wish they'd make the Magicka sale apply for the whole pack. Currently, it's only for the base game and some of the DLCs.

Yeah, I'd like to get The Other Side of the Coin but 5 euros is too much considering I didn't finish the base game nor the Cthulhu-based one yet.

Do GamersGate sales work like Steam? Like, if a game is 50% off right now should I wait and see if it gets a bigger reduction?

Seems to be that way except that the deals change weekly based on its genre.

Today's hint:

"Tomorrow we´ll learn why we fall down (To learn to pick ourselves up and beat the crap out of Gotham badguys. But you knew that, right?) and when we´re done with that, it´s time for some serious zombie slaying! I\'ve covered wars you know."

This one's trickier, but I think it's gonna be Arkham City. Isn't the falling down bit a quote from the movie?

The zombie games, well, there's tons of games but perhaps we'll see a pack?

Finally the "I've fought wars you know?" bit is hinting at another game I think.

Anyway, the Thief collection is going for 6.74€ and it can be activated on Steam. They're GREAT games, they're First-Person stealth games where your goal is mostly to steal stuff, not kill. They're old (the last one came out in 2006) but they feature the best mechanics I've ever seen in a stealth game and they're worth playing (also, I advise not pirating them, for some reason they glitch incessantly when pirated. I know, I tried it) - if not for the mechanics, then for the background which is sort of a alchemist steampunk (not quite steampunk mind you, kinda industrial medieval age with fantasy elements... it's extremely hard to explain).

Verdict. The THIEF series is near perfection, and I dare say you'd be a fool not to play it.

The "falling down" quote is from Batman Begins, but referenced in The Dark Knight Rises. The fact that they say Gotham kind of gives it away, too. Could be either of the Batman games, though I suppose Arkham City is more likely.

"I've covered wars you know?" means it's gonna be Dead Rising 2 or Dead Rising 2: Off The Record.

We have the new hint:

"Brace yourself for the deals of tomorrow! We\'ll be getting our share of dystopic metro action, World War II gun battles and I´ve even heard there´s gonna be a super sweet deal on the most realistic sniping experience ever!"

Apparently that means Metro 2033, a WW2 game, and Sniper Elite - which, incidentally, is pretty crappy as far as sniping simulator go.

Considering they only give two games per hint, I'm sure the WW2 gun battle game is going to be Sniper Elite.

Oh, and week 2 of the deals has started, and it's Action games. I'm 100% sure next weeks are strategy and adventure (they only have so many genres in their search filters).

Looks like Saints Row The Third, Just Cause 2 and Duke Nukem Forever tomorrow.

Hope the rest of the SR3 DLCs take a price drop too.

I like how GG overprices stuff to compensate for IGN promo or Blue Coins. I still haven't bought anything from them.
