I would say get the XBOX 360 Controller for Steam Play. There are a couple of reasons:

Have to search for someone who's from Microsoft then...xD also do they get even bigger discounts during Black Fridays?heh

360 controller is the best as it has the most all around support and it has much better quality than a lot of 3rd party gamepads.
2nd would probably be a logitech dualshock controller. Good quality, good compatibility.
3rd would be a PS3 controller. Best quality controller, but fails for not being natively PC compatible and requiring 3rd party workarounds to make it work with a lot of games.
The wired 360 controller will work plug and play on a PC. But if you have a wireless 360 controller from your xbox and no wireless receiver for the PC, you can't get it to work, as they no longer sell the wireless receiver by itself and the 3rd party receivers are trash. If you want wireless, you have to buy the wireless 360 controller that comes with the wireless receiver.

Amazon doesn't agree:

I am sure they are fine. The user comments attesting t the fact that the driver automatically installs is the main clue imo.
There seems to be a lot of misinformation regarding these units online. The most common one I see everywhere on the net is that "Units labeled "Xbox 360" are fakes! - only Ones that say "Microsoft" are Real!"
I've seen many, many comments regarding that one. In that case however, apparently Microsoft doesn't agree:
http://www.microsoft.com/games/en-US/Hardware/Controllers/Pages/XboxWirelessGamingReceiverforWindows.aspx
I purchased a controller/receiver pack myself here in China (actually I might have ordered from HK) just like you are mentioning, the package is labeled in english/chinese/korean for this region (if that matters), and the receiver inside I received is labeled "Xbox 360". It does not find the driver automatically when plugged in (when the driver is already installed on the system), but I had to add and search manually in the control panel for it, like supposedly fake devices. Regardless, it works perfectly and I have been happy with it. /shrug

I didn't say those specific receivers weren't fine. I said that they are either fake OR they are left over from when they used sell them separately. So those could very well be legitimate receivers. It's just that MS themselves are no longer putting them out by themselves any more, so all the ones that are out there on the market are going to eventually be bought up and the only option left is going to be to buy one with the controller.
I guess there is the possibility that someone could be buying the controller/receiver bundles and splitting them up and selling them separately for a bit of profit, but that just kinda seems like it would be more trouble than it's worth.

360 wireless is great all around except that you can't be a little too rough with the controller or it will disconnect because the battery casing has moved. Soon you'll need to improvise by adding duct tape to it or putting a little piece of paper behind the metal contact point to fix things.

Just normal use for one year before the problem starts to appear. Perhaps it was because the frequent changing of batteries. And rough like that sudden movement that people make when an opponent scored a goal in FIFA match but you just can't believe what happened and blame it on the lag.

I have a launch one that is beaten to hell and the battery pack never comes loose, hell I open and close it multiple times a day on top of that to turn it off.

Ughh I have the wireless one, rather have a wired one...that battery pack is annoying and its more heavy.
Comment has been collapsed.
Ugh... Just get a Xbox 360 Controller and plug it into your PC.
I got a Logitech F320 or something like that, it's great for kinda top-down and SOME sidescrolling things, however it's a little difficult to set up for most things and I guess it works alright for FPS, but I'm not a fan of controllers for those anyway.

The Logitech F310, if set for Xinput, is exactly the same as a 360 controller. (Except for the D-pad/Left stick placement) You don't need to set it up any more than the X360 one.
Comment has been collapsed.
The F310 is meant to be a 1:1 replacement for the Xbox360 controller. As long as the switch underneath is set to X (for Xinput) it should react like the Xbox360 controller in every game. You can also put the switch on D (Directinput) for compatibility with older games that don't work well with the 360 controller.

Well then, I was unaware of this. I think I've had it on DirectInput since I've had it... Mighta switched it back and forth a few times without noticing much difference.

Playstation 1/2/3 + converter (for 1/2) + MotionJoy

I have a wired PS3 (custom) controller, using DS3 tool to make it work perfectly with steam games (for you who don't know, it's just a program that makes the PS3 controller input become XBOX360, or rather, the game thinks it is, all you need to do is start the program and press a button, voila). Works perfectly, and it was cheaper than the xbox 360 controllers.

Depends on what you're playing. For most things I'd use a 360 controller (and do), but if you need a dpad, the 360's is awful and I'd go for a PS3 controller, despite the extra effort it takes to set it up.
EDIT: Also, the wired 360 controller has no battery pack and is therefore lighter. It's really not super noticeable though. However you need a special part to connect your wireless 360 controller to your PC, so you're best and cheapest solution is to get the wired one anyway.

I wish I had a wired one, the wireless pack is annoying.

I really like the xbox 360 controller nowadays (the old xbox controller pretty much scared me off for a good amount of time), but I must agree with others, the D-pad is shit. If you can get a 3rd party x360 controller which has the D-pad PS style (4 separate buttons preferably) I'd go with that one.

gamecube controller or N64 controler with the right convertor from the respectivly one to usb i have one and i play my backups and steam games{Well i am a little Nintendo boy but think about it}

I think the gamecube controller might be my most hated controller....the button placement and sizing is awful if you don't have 5 year old hands...this is coming from someone who loves Nintendo.
Comment has been collapsed.
Yep I'm 5 years old. Just because I loved controller doesn't mean I love everything Nintendo does, your logic seems younger than me. But hey go check on Monica she likes a Wiimote.
Loved the the the L & R pressure triggers and the "click" feature, got the best grip on any controller I used to date. D-Pad was small but at least was firm and precise, X360 is by far one of the worst D-Pad on existence.
Liking the abxy position (and the controller for what matters) is a matter of taste not a matter of love for a company, your argument is by itself a fallacy.

Wow way to misinterpret what I said, personally it feels odd on my hands like it was developed for a younger crowd, I have average sized hands for a 24 year old guy. Besides the actual controller shape, I hated the analog sticks, the 2nd ones the worst offender imo, the button placement is annoying, I pretty much hate everything about it, thats my opinion, don't get your panties in a bunch.
Not everyone is gonna feel the way you do...Also no one called you 5, you automatically thought that which is pretty much your own fault. I also never said you loved everything Nintendo made, I said I pretty much did besides this controller and couple other things hence the "this is coming from someone who loves Nintendo.", it made the Gamecube for me an undesirable system even thought I liked a couple games on it.
N64 controller was better for my hands, not to much a fan of it also but its alright...360 D pad is awful, not that the GC one was much better...so it doesn't matter to me.
Btw that was a terrible pun, those got old before the Wii was released and no one here mentioned the Wiimote.

Its fine, I get it, some people can be terrible on forums, its alright to disagree, didn't know you weren't an English speaker, makes sense that you might misread what I said.
All is well :-).

Eh.. I personally do not like the N64 controller, and liked the gamecube one more than it. That said though I do not care too much for the gamecube controllers either lol. At least the D-pad on it is better than the 360 one.
I just do not get how they screwed that up soo bad considering... no idea why they thought going with what they went with was good. Part of me wants to see if I can "fix" the D-Pad on mine so it wont be soo crappy.

Using the Logitech F510. Never a fan of the wireless kind, so didnt get the F710 sister model. Plus as already mentioned, Logitech Warranty is superb. On everything that i've owned from them so far they have been giving full money back or replacement even 6 years after the original buy. Superb service if you ask me.

The extra buttons are no 'extra buttons', you can only remap others buttons to it as far as I know (I have a Onza myself, same there, just remappig).
Maybe this article is nice for you.
