Not a good development ... from what I'm gathering its a "safety measure"² that is internationally catching on.
² primarily: most useful to silence/scare/suppress any kind of opposition under the pretext of "protection"

The tracks for that have been set over the last decades ... taking a turn for the worst with InsideBush and following
down the line with WarBama - it takes more than just the "authority" of a president to change that course.
Although i doubt it makes a drastic difference, i agree - Hillary would've certainly been the better pawn.

Breitbart. When Even Fox News would say: "Guys, nobody in their right mind would fall for this!"
Although there is something hilariously funny in the fact that America's most rabid extreme ultra right-wing news outlet is also the most pro-Israel medium of the country. How allegiances can change…

So, this means that in a few years, every kid with a smartphone could miraculously hack stuff with one push of a button, which button can act as stealing money, bypassing security, stopping traffic, diverting the attention of the authorities, tapping into camera feeds, and in altogether do more than the one button on the iPhone ever managed to do… and also in real time?

with one push of a button
I guarantee the whole place starts jumpin'.
That's assuming, of course, the targeting doesn't have the same quirks as the targeting in Watch Dogs was purported to have..

There has already been widespread abuses of surveillance powers by certain authorities - from laughable examples of local councils using anti-terror laws to crack down on people using the wrong bin for their recycling through to to more sinister cases of police intimidating and discrediting victims of miscarriages of justice and organised abuse. Given her support for snooping as home secretary most people assumed things would only get worse with Theresa May in charge and that certainly seems to be the case.

Yeah, the measure itself is ugly and excessive - no doubt that some of those "controversial" cases which
make it to the news in the first place, are the reminder for people - "we can get you too" ...

Dude, a massive population that is armed is no joke. As Caligu1a says the VC, or worse Japan during WW2 if we had actually invaded. Hell even modern war in the Middle East is made up of lightly prepared militia groups holding 70 year old guns that do extraordinary against half a million dollar war toys, minus ISIS they are armed and trained to the teeth.

UK is about to become one of the world’s foremost surveillance states, allowing its police and intelligence agencies to spy on its own people to a degree that is unprecedented for a democracy. The UN’s privacy chief has called the situation "worse than scary." Edward Snowden says it’s simply "the most extreme surveillance in the history of western democracy."
The legislation in question is called the Investigatory Powers Bill. It’s been cleared by politicians and awaits only the formality of royal assent before it becomes law. The bill will legalize the UK’s global surveillance program, which scoops up communications data from around the world, but it will also introduce new domestic powers, including a government database that stores the web history of every citizen in the country. UK spies will be empowered to hack individuals, internet infrastructure, and even whole towns — if the government deems it necessary.
