That's what happens when stupid people pay $15 for 3 maps in Call of Shit and buy other usless DLC. The developers see this and get the idea to see how far they can push the limit. So far, it is limitless.

Because customers are good little sheep and when they see the "free stuff" tag they will pre-order it now with out knowing anything about it for the full price instead of waiting for those pesky sales... also prevents them from not buying it at all if it turns out to be shit. Bonus points if the system is being cleverly manipulated so the level needed for the free game is never reached(cough XCOM cough). Ok, ok, that last one might not be true, but hey, pessimism! :D
Um, if you meant about the XP boosting stuff in particular, simple words can't describe how lame that is so I'll just call it ridiculous and leave it at that.

Not sure what exactly you mean by XCOM here. As far as I can notice, every day it raises a bit (5% today, more or less). Unfortunately, most people already preordered, so it will be quite slow, but there's a chance anyway.
Or, if you can't wait to get that Civ5, you can go to gmg and get it for $6 - it's on sale there, and you can use additional -20% code. And if preorders will get to 100%, you'll have game for friend. Or to giveaway.

Uhm... there's a typo in your post. As much as I'd love to believe it, a $6 pre-order for XCOM: Enemy Unknown is impossible.
(Zlia was referring to this copy of XCOM; which is supposed to give out a free copy of Civ V once the pre-order count reaches 100%)
[EDIT: ok, that makes more sense now :) ]

Yeah I noticed this too just today. The "in-game currency" bit in the Features section sounds like they added microtransactions for the multiplayer part. Could anyone confirm? I hope we're not there yet, this isn't even a MMO, things are really getting out of hands...

They want people to pay that overblown $60 or more price. So they add crap to make it happen. I'm not affected but such games however. Most I ever paid for a game was $30 for Warcraft 3 Collectors Edition about six months after the game came out.

I completely see your point some of the pre order stuff is stupid, in my opinion the best for the customer and developers would be to give the first game if its a sequel, as if you have not played it you get to see the story for the first or give it to a friend who might then end up picking up the second. by the way I already pre ordered CoH 2 because if you played the first and like RTS its an absolutely amazing game

and if you know anything about Relic, you should know CoH2 is not guaranteed to be like the first one, because Dawn of War 2 was a drastic change to the first one.

Personally I think the series would benefit from this rebirth as an FPS with microtransactions.
Bring it on :)

I doubt they'd change how CoH works seeing as it is one of their best franchise and the reactions from players about the system change for DoW. With a friend we've played easily more than 400 hours on CoH and if the system were to change drastically it would be a no play for us.
I'm not certain what XP is about but I believe it is about persistent Commander evolution. Which in that case would have no impact on balance if match-making is properly done.
Also the game you're speaking of wouldn't be X-COM ? have to try it one of these days.

What I remember from gamescom is that all games will have some micropayment feature or atleast booster packs (e.g. battlefield 3) with addition to some "social" integrity.
Luckily it will not touch indie developers, atleast now.
I think that company of heroes will have stronger rpg features than before.
About pre-purchase rewards … I dont know, for me sounds third reward from XCOM better – Civilization 5

I don't mind pre-order bonuses. It is a cheap and effect way for developers to give back to their loyal fans, and some bonues are get pretty damn cool(aka playing as Stan Lee in the Amazing Spiderman game). Also there are a few developers and a few publishers(ok there WAS a single publisher) I will always support with pre-orders. I want these companies to get the full value of the games they are making so I can keep enjoying new games as they come out. Working Designs was a company back in the day(and was the only publisher I would pre-order all their titles) that always had a niffty pre-order bonus. Granted their pre-order swag was actual watches, clocks, and other goodies, but the fact remains that they never disappointed me with the quality of the games they brought over and since they were a small company they actually needed the upfront support to keep them going.

I finally actually preordered my second game, xcom and it better be be xcom, I swear if it's xcom enforcer again I will be pissed. And the only reason I own enforcer it came with the bundle.

Placing money on random process is called gambling. Sometimes it pays off, sometimes it does not.

He means pre-ordering and hoping that it reaches a high tier, the random process being how many people actually pre-ordering to reach the next rewards

I would also argue that pre-ordering a game based on vague idea of its content and hoping that it is good is gambling. Usually information before launch is limited and skewed. The concept of the game in your mind is formed based on mostly some screenshots, few videos and paid reviews.
Then we also got the possibility of straight lies from developer/publisher, launch bugs and problems, possible hardware problems and other goodies.

Having pay-to-win stuff as a pre-order bonus is idiotic at best.
Yes, there is going to be people who want pay-to-win because they prefer to spend more money to get through a game faster, but most of those people are certainly not going to pre-order the game...

It's lame and its sounds like a gamble ,you're pre-ordering to get a specific reward but if there aren't enough pre-orders you wont get it and then you're disappointed and frustrated.

Game can turn out to be bullshit. Why waithing for bad reviews and ranking at Metacritic? You buy a full game without konwing if it's actually good just to get some cool stuff. Greedy ones.

You saw it here first and I still think this new system is bullshit.

I remember some time ago I saw a game that did a pre-purchase reward where if x amount of people pre-purchase the game, the pre-purchasers get certain rewards that tilt the scales in their favor, which is completely retarded
I brought this up because I saw it on Company of Heroes 2, the first one was a great game and all, but exp and unit boosts for pre-purchasing Company of Heroes 2 just sounds ridiculous for a competitive RTS game
What do you guys think?
