Wait, a Groupees ShinyLoot bundle would have it's DRM-free downloads and/or Steam keys distributed via Groupees, so nothing should be affected.

Not true. I bought ShinyLoot Bundle #6 and all Groupees did was give SL keys, so everything was provided by SL.

Oh, then that is a problem.

There were 10 of those over a year ago that only gave ShinyLoot keys, from there you could then get Steam/Desura keys and/or DRM-free DLs

Any clue which exactly those were?
I've no idea what to even begin looking for :P

Edit: Oh, it's specifically the https://groupees.com/shinyloot line of bundles, gotcha.
Totally forgot about them, they haven't made one since December 2014, and I never bought any of them to begin with. :'P

Bump for visibility.

I kind of had a feeling they were headed this direction... things had been pretty quiet from them. I do wish them luck in their future endeavors and respect them highly for running their business with integrity through till the very end. ShinyLoot was definitely one of the good guys.

bump and remember some games like the two creeper world ones require in game keys, so be sure to write those down. also make sure you redeemed all your steam keys, I noticed I hadn't redeemed a "way to go" key that had been added and one other game.

Wow these guys... I'm trying to activate all my keys, but I think they're blocking IP addresses if you try to access the site too much. Activated 5 keys or so, suddenly can't load the page anymore. Logged into school VPN, activated another 5 keys or so, then again suddenly can't access the site anymore...

Yes, had the same issue. Clicking slower helped a bit, but some ip changes were still needed...

Wouldn't surprise me. They don't even appear to use encryption on their site, which I always thought was odd and lazy.

Yeah, I got this email this morning. Very sad. There are lots of places selling steam keys but there aren't a lot of places selling DRM-free, so it's a real loss. They were one of the good guys, I agree. sigh

"We know that it's not a great message to receive at the end of the year..." - posted 8th Jan. is that end of year? RIP logic. no wonder they went out of business. lel

On a side note, Get Games store has also been down for weeks now. I don't know if they had a catastrophe or what, but I'd have to think that it was the absolute worst time of the year to not be online and doing business.

just about every other file I'm DLing gets a "this file is not commonly downloaded" malware block from chrome; at least we know video game piracy isn't a thing because if there were such a thing as piracy the files would all be commonly downloaded.

And Groupees might be next. They used to have their site cluttered with loads of crappy bundles, now there's only one really crappy bundle active alongside two music bundles. Mark my words!

I think a lot of places simply don't expect people to have much cash left after Christmas. Humble have no main bundle up at the moment and the last few weeklies have been a bit poop (riff trax and a uplay rebundle). I'm sure Groupees will be full of crap again soon.

From the Primordia dev: "I wish it was $.50. IIRC, it was $.17. Groupees was a catastrophic decision by WEG, although potentially it spread word of mouth: we sold 40k keys and made like $5k for it".

From the Quest for Infamy dev: "Yeah, god, Groupees - the amount we made in a Groupees bundle was very similar to yours. Never again".

There's always a dev or publisher who doesn't understand the economics of bundles, and ends up complaining what a mistake it was after the fact. This has happened countless times. It's the reason why the Humble Monthly is taking over, because putting games in cheap bundles is something a lot of devs are no longer willing to do.

What, having only a few bundles going at a time is cause for concern? Having lots of bundles running simultaneously only started around Q2 last year. This was pretty much the norm before.

Well, yes, sure. After the last Be Mine I really got worried what's going on behind the curtains at Groupees and now nothing new for such a long time.... :)

The day that happens I will throw my hands up and yell "Hallelujah!!". I used to be a avid supporter years ago, but with the shady anti-consumer things they have been doing in more recent times I have completely gone the other way. It just goes to show you how far they have fallen and how far they have veered off-track.

I'm not sure on the developer side of things, but I've personally never had any issues with Groupees, and they seem to sell quite a lot of every bundle that comes out, I don't forsee them going the way of shinyloot, nor do they have nothing but crappy bundles.

Sure they throw out an occasional stinker but then again just about all bundle sites except the Humble Monthly and Indie Gala Monday toss our stinkers. It just happens with so many games getting bundled..

Permalink

Desura's kind of weird. There are some (thankfully relatively few) games that don't have links to installers on the site and must be downloaded from within the client.

I've too put it off since I know it's going to be a pain.
