What would you choose?
I have the same opinion about Motorola, that's why I started to look at those chinese things.
Not too easy to find smartphone with a thick phone case, I'm just looking for something like this :)
Old Samsung Solid would be good, but it's just getting too old, I need that android for work/gps/studying.

How does your old phone not being updated to a recent OS version disqualify the producer? Motorola has recently been one of the best, if not the best, in providing OS updates. But unfortunately support for old phones is notoriously bad all around - although there are plenty of community made ROMs with more recent OS versions for just about every moderately popular phone. Might want to take a look at those to breathe some new life into your phone.

I'm not familiar with those phones, and although new or previously unknown Chinese companies have been making excellent phones in the last few years, I fear that those will give you precisely what you said - they will look sturdy, but whether or not theythey actually remains unknown. I've heard some good experiences about the Xcover series when it comes to durability, and the most recent one may not be as hopeless as a phone as the first one was, either.
Your best bet is probably to try and do research on those Chinese phones to find out if they'll give you what they claim, and if you remain unsure, go with the Xcover.

I've had the top premium phones for the last 5 years, twice a year changing.
Last year February (2015) I took out another new device, then came to the realisation that there's no real point in me upgrading anymore.
The only real changes for me these days are the screens with better resolution, since we don't ever need all that computational power, and anything around 10-15MP camera will do.
I have a new device to be scheduled again for April, but I'm not paying anything more than my base contract going forward.
Even my dev work doesn't need fancier phones, as it works on even the most basic of Android phones.
I've tested the Huawei Mate S, which is one of the best out there at the moment, but if you want real quality on budget go for the Huawei Ascend G7, so much more value.

there still are some very good options from them. Not the newest that are out there, but phones which were the best 2-3 years ago.
I really don't need Quad CPU for phone and 2 GB RAM.. I wouldn't even use that xD
Such "flag" phones from 2-3 years ago, are currently 3-4 times cheaper and most of them are supported to newer OS. But the resistance is questionable.

I have a Huawei P8. In my opinion it has the best quality/price ratio.
I think that those "chinaphone" are a waste of money.

Do you know why those Chinese phones are so cheap ? They make agreements with shady companies and send the phones with thousands of bloatwares/malwares installed. You might see Ads even with no application running, just switching screens generates some ads and you'd be lucky to just get ads. My friend used his chinese phone (xy something I don't remember the name) for a month and then it got thousands of viruses and malwares, it started to freeze every 30 seconds.
Samsung is a shitty brand, they make terrible OS. The TouchWiz is crap and full of bugs and Samsung phones also have shitload of bloatwares.
Motorola seems a good choice among them but I'd suggest a Sony, even a cheap Sony is damn good.

I have no idea what 'rooting" is, I read somethings about it yesterday, but I'm not advanced user to do it myself.
Not sure if I'm talking now about the right model, but probably Samsung Xcover 3 takes 3/4 of space for opetating system and it's hard to install anything on this phone (on SD card) without that 'rooting' thing.
Comment has been collapsed.
Rooting your phone is like getting access to everything on it. Without it, you can't uninstall most of the built-in apps, modify OS overlays, etc. You can even try to recover previously deleted data or install applications on SD card (which is impossible without rooting the device). There are 2 major cons of rooting - losing warranty (rooting can be reverted though) and "bricking" (permament freezing) your phone if you don't do it correctly.

Try Xiaomi phones. I've got the Mi3 at the moment, it's pretty strong (5" Full HD screen, 2,3GHz Quadcore CPU, 2GB RAM, Adreno 330 graphics), reliable and the 64GB ROM version costs only $160 on Ibuygou. Be wary of CPUs variations, supporting different network types (WCDMA, CDMA etc.). Just don't go with 16GB version, it's a bit cheaper, but doesn't support memory expanding using microSD cards (or any other).

More than a year already and that's my best phone so far. The only problem I have encountered is Xiaomi's UI, called MIUI, which is really RAM consuming - the phone likes to run slow if you have much applications running in the background. It got patched already though :)
If Mi3 is too strong for you, take a look on Redmi 2 / Hongmi 2 (it's the same phone with different names depending on selling region). Unfortunately, because of only 1GB RAM installed Redmi would have to be rooted in order to run completely smooth.
PS Z tego co widzę jesteś z Polski, więc jak masz jakieś pytania (nie tylko odnośnie Xiaomi ;)) to śmiało dodaj mnie na steamie ;)

I know nothing about the phones you mentioned but I'm pretty satisfied with one plus phones...my boyfriend had one plus one for almost two years (I think) - with the combination of OtterBox + Tempered Glass Screen Protector that phone still looks new and is without a scratch. He recently gave this phone to his dad and got himself one plus 2 (he needed 2 sim card slots because of his work), got https://oneplus.net/hr/otterbox-case-for-oneplus-2 in black and https://oneplus.net/oneplus-2-tempered-glass-screen-protector. I wanted to get one plus one but got one plus x in the end because it's at least a bit smaller and I got small hands :/ I did notice you added that you don't want anything too big so probably these phones wouldn't be any good to you...but it is just an idea if you find a phone that you like that you could get tempered glass and a really strong case for it - it might solve your problems. Hope this is at least a bit useful :/

I'm retty much enjoying LG G2, had it for two years and so far so good.
The downside? Obvious: large screen with no borders, thus if it falls on its edge on a hard surface you're instantly down a hundred plus bucks for a new glass.

I haven't heard of the phones you've listed, I'll look into them later and post an edit. What I can say now is that from what you've previously said here, I think a Xiaomi Redmi 2 with a decent case and a tempered glass screen protector could fit your needs at around $115 with accessories. But, that means you'll be importing, so there may be VAT (depends on your country).

If you are adamant about Android (even though IMO under the premium category it runs terrible), then try something from Huawei or Xaomi. They both targeted the international audience and are known for their decent to excellent quality and durability (just not of the battery, although I have seen a Samsung of the same price range regularly die faster than a Huawei when the company changed the phones of the newcomers from Galaxy).

small phones is a issue... I like to carry my phones on my pockets so it HAS to be small. lately I bought one bigger (5.5') but it is not the same thing. I still miss my old phones.
my advice is the Defy+ is the BEST device I ever had. it is a very outdated phone you can install another Android on it (4.0.4 and so on) and it has a LOT custom ROMS out there (they are all in xda-developers). The phone is VERY strong and never broke with me (got it stolen). my best advice: get the Defy+ and fully customize it (I can help you out... I still remember something).
in other hand, if you want something better, with more technology and modern features like new stock android updates and things like that, you should go for the strong chinese one. I, myself, only pick Defy+ if I'm available and ready to fully customize its android's.

WAY faster and smoother than stock... but in other hand it consumes more battery. you may want to carry an extra battery when it is possible (pineng extra batteries are a very good and reliable choice). surprisingly, defy+ is a very strong phone with a lot of unused potential (that's why people explore it so much). I really miss all that customizable options on phones.
take a look (note: there are better and more polished ROMS than this one)

with what you wrote here, I'm almost decided, will wait and check what people write, but I really don't need anything expensive and super cool (yeah, I have grown a long time ago from times when having expensive phone was adding +10 to coolness). Now I need something durable and usefull. Something which will work next 3+ years with me.
Reinstalling Android to 4.0.4 will cancell warranty, right?
Comment has been collapsed.
in brazil motorola don't care about it... but in other countries I heard it do cancel but not confirmed. you may want to full customize when the warranty is not available anymore (I usually do that). in addition, you can always unroot and get back to stock rom (like was original... I don't know if it leaves any tracks).
in your case, if you will wait to customize, download everything you can... they may not be available in one year. since everything was on my notebook (they stolen it together with my entire house) I don't have it anymore.
I'm pretty sure that you will spend a lot of time looking for the perfect ROM for you (and lots of fun I think) with so many options of customization.

i would just get whatever phone you like the, Samsung Galaxy S5 Sport would likely be a pretty good one for you the S5's are better then the S6's imo because they have replaceable battery's and sd cards, the sport is a bit more durable and is waterproof for 30 minutes, but then get yourself a otterbox phone case they have some pretty damn durable ones out there for about any phone and range in cost from anywhere from $30-$100 depending on how durable you want it some of them cover the screen and all.

I don't know where you are in the world right now, however in case if you are looking for really tough phone you can try these out.
tuffphones
In case if you want fast and good phone with a reasonable price you can get OnePlus One. Pretty awesome phone, and you can use a toughened glass protector and a good case cover to go with it.

Phone from good company like: Samsung. OH cmon Samsung really? That overpriced crap

The Motorola Defy+ has quite a few custom Android 4.4 firmwares. However my understanding is that they tend to be quite sluggish. It's an old phone with old hardware.

Hey folks! I would like to ask for some advice from you. This is a huge community with people from the whole world, so I expect to find some helpfull tips.
My old Samsung Wave S8500 is broken after 5 years of using (sometimes in hardcore conditions). It had strong metal cover, so it fell a lot of times and just 2 years ago I managed to break the screen, but it was still working! Unfortunately some days ago it fell And half of the screen stopped working, so it's time for a new phone! I'm currently using some creepy, old HTC that is totally not for me.
While my old Wave S8500 had some creepy badaOS it was pretty resistant which was the most important for me. But now I'm looking for a resistant smartphone with Android and these are generally my the most important conditions! if possible also not too expensive :P It just can't broke too easily.
So in last 3 days I was going through a lot of sites reading about phones and their functionality. Phones that I found and would be most suitable for me was Samsung Galaxy Xcover but it doesn't look like it would resist the first fall, Motorola Defy+. Resistant models of Sony Xperia are out of my reach because of their price.
So I'm almost decided to buy Motorola Defy + as it is very interesting phone, but looks like you can't update your android on this phone from 2.3 Gingerbread to anything newer, it's not supported. Additionally looks like Motorola is not supporting EUROPE anymore.
And then I accidently found some Models of cheap Chinese cell phones which are 'strong', has a lot of usefull options and looks solid like nothing else. Phones I'm talking about: Discovery V8 or V9, JEEP Z6, Hummer V5.
Those phones are imported from China, only a few business firms have it available in my country and looks like they give 1 year service warranty.
Here's the main question what do you think about those phones, just if you can write anything useful about pros and cons or anything that would encourage or discourage me to buy it, I would be really grateful :) Or maybe should I choose Defy+ after all? I'm just in 'dead end' no idea what to do.
Or maybe you want to suggest somethine else.. I'm open to suggestions! My main condition: Smartphone with Android that is very resistant! (A must is a good GPS and good range and flash IP67 or 68 would be nice(nothing found about calling range of those Chinese phones yet! if you know please tell :D) Runbo x5 would be perfect but is out of reach because of price :P Hopefully it can work at least 3 years.
There's obligatory giveaway hidden: probably not too well :p
I'm also offering some (not too many) whitelist spots for most usefull people. 2 giveaways are ongoing till Sunday evening.
btw. I'm totally not caring about how it look.
btw2. not interesting in anything too big (over 4''). Bigger screen = easier to break.
