Hello there. I'm studying some english this year, trying to improve, sounds nice in the CV (the curriculum, not steamgifts :P) and its useful and blablabla. Like every year they force you to read some adapted books, which is the best path to thate and evilness but stil... I really have no idea what to read, so I'm asking for directions in here, mostly because everyone in here talks in english. Most of the books are also adapted so its no big deal, what I'm looking for its a nice story, best way to counter attack an obligated lecture :(

So far, for christmas, these are the options:

Jane Eyre by Charlotte Bronte
The Perks of Being a Wallflower by Daphne Du Maurier
The Go-Between by LP Hartley
The Devil's Arithmetic bu Jane Yolen

Personally I don't like the first one but this is without any reason. I just don't like Jane Eyre. Don't know how, why or from how long. No idea. If its recommended it will be readed, of course :P

I would like to put the giveaway in the poll, but my fear was the game was the most voted, so its in here(it's a bundled game but still... Best i can offer now)

Thanks in advance and sorry for my english

So it's just 1 of the 4, we can't give different titles?

No. My teacher is basically burnt with her job and wont accept any other book. That is "too much work" for her and its out of the question. Sad but true. We can discuss this "burnout syndrome" and the "state of the education" in other post or this one too. The class we just agreed to accept because any kind of "negotiation" with hers will be seen as a direct attack agains her personally or with her ways of teaching.

Its a pretty much weird atmosphere, yes.

That's one... quite random list of books. I'm not familiar with "The Go-Between", but it's pretty hard to make any connections between the other three writers.

Anyway...

Go with Daphne du Maurier. When it comes to female writers, she and Edith Nesbit are perhaps the best in my opinion. But are you sure about the title? I don't think there's a book of hers that goes by such name.

I would personally recommend "Love Story" by Erich Segal
but given the above scenario I would recommend the 2nd option as I have seen the movie and it was quite good.
