Dark Souls seems decent and lotsa ppl been talking about it.

Torchlight 2 looks fun, I played the first one for about 30 hrs i think andthen kinda got bored of it. not sure if the same will happen with torchlight 2 since its multiplayer, although i have no friends that play it.

Should i get one of them? or is there a good game on sale atm?

Thanks.

Dark Souls: challenging, difficult, not for people who get easily frustrated cause you will die a lot, but overall a masterpiece among ARPGs. Torchlight 2: the poor man's Diablo. Both are worth it, imho.

You mean the Diablo for people who refuse always-on DRM and a complete lack of single player when the first two games of the series were heavy on that?

And yes, you CAN play alone in D3 - but it's still just one-player multiplayer. For a game to be truly self-sufficient idiotic things like demanding an internet connection every second need to be absent

"You mean the Diablo for people who refuse always-on DRM and a complete lack of single player when the first two games of the series were heavy on that?"
Technically no... because if you're comparing Torchlight II to a Diablo game, it'd be Diablo II, not the abomination that is Diablo 3.
So yeah, Torchlight IS the "poor man's Diablo (II)", however, it's still a great game and I would highly recommend it to anyone who wants something similar to Diablo II.

Fair, I may have taken the "poor" part a bit too literally, thinking that D2 surely must be available for $20 by now.

"Torchlight 2: the poor man's Diablo.". Good one. Implying that some game is better because it's expensive. Even if pricing would be the other way around, I would still get Torchlight 2 and not Diablo 3.

The phrase "poor man's _____" is a way to compare two things where one (the cheaper price) is often has some flaws or missing features to the other (more expensive one).
it's not better because it's more expensive, it's more expensive because it's better.

Now don't get me wrong, I love Torchlight II, it's a great game... but Diablo II does a lot of things better. Conversely Torchlight II does some things better than Diablo II. However in the story department, I find Torchlight II kind of lacking.

I own both Diablo 3 Collector's Edition and Torchlight 2. Does that make me rich and poor at the same time? :P

On a more serious note, I find myself spending more time on TL2 than D3. D3 isn't that bad by any means though, just that TL2 appeals more to me.

IMO I find Torchlight II more enjoyable than Diablo III, I didn't even try Inferno 'cause it was boring as hell. :c
Also, the always-online in D3 pisses me off.

I think Torchlight II has better replayability and great co-op fun. And it isn't such a shitty port like Dark Souls.

Speaking of which, the sales on these games are ending in 13 hours. Anybody wanna get into a 4-pack for TL2 really fast?

in 30 minutes you wont get the full point of torchlight in my opinion, i know for sure tl2 is worth the money and time, but in torchlight one i kept learning new things about the game which made the start of the game a lot more fun, now i am already lvl 62 and enjoying the game so much, when i finish with TL1 i am heading to play TL2 :)

Both are pretty boring.

As for Torchlight 2, I just no longer have fun playing Diablo-like games even though I was a fan of Diablo 2 in it's time. I play TC2 in multiplayer with friends and it still doesn't seem to be entertaining. I suppose I need not to mention that the story and all the quests in it are cliche, passive skills are more viable than the active ones and you end up holding your left mouse button and never even touching anything else and it is rather simplified compared to Diablo 3 in terms of skills and attributes.

Dark Souls has nothing to offer apart from an artificial challenge. It's story is sparse and barely exists. It has a truly horrible coop multuplayer, I haven't seen anything worse, ever. The game has poor level design. It's repetitive. Getting your video and control setting done properly is a pain. And even if you did get them, the controls (even with gamepad) will be your worst enemy throughout the game. As WraithFluX said, they could've just released an artbook.

Dark Souls is the most original game I've played in recent years. Can't argue about the sparse story though. When I finished the game I was like - so what was that all about, why do I kill all of this people, and why do I set my self ablaze. And then I read some of the lore. On my second playthrough I tried to talk to each of the NPC. Only after that the story began to piece together.

Anyway, tears.

Dark Souls is amazing, but if you are going to be playing it on the PC you will need a Cotroller (Xbox360 or something simmiliar would do) and i'm not sure if you still need that community patch for the resolution. Do some research, the PC port has some problems, but the game is amazing!

dark souls....you die VERY often- even "easy" enemys are hard. It is very very hard. Hardest RPG on the market. Do not buy it if you haven't played through Super Meat Boy with all levels A+ and all bandages. That is what you need to play through Dark Souls.

The ability requirement in Dark Souls is completely different from Meat Boy. It IS hard, but you do not require cdrazy execution, unless you try to do things like parry-focused builds or something. Meat Boy requires much more executionwise than Dark Souls.

When u choose Dark Souls for PC, than its easier to play with a XboX360 Controller, and its more fun to play.
If u use an Playstation Controller, its hard to find or remember which Button is for which control, so i would recommend DS + XBox360 Controller !
And many Times to get Angry :D

PC ARPG that requires a controller? Wtf? :) That's enough to turn me away from it.

As for T2 - got it, love it. As a big D2 fan, i pre-ordered both D3 and T2. Don't play any atm due to lack of time, but when this changes I'l always prefer T2. D3 was a big let down

From what DS looks like it's more a God of War-type game with RPG building. Kind of like how Borderlands is an FPS with gear and stats. The controller requirement comes as a product of the primary playstyle, not the RPG elements

The hell? How it is God of War? its nowhere near it.

Dark Souls is VERY challenging game. True action RPG, with more RPG inside. This game wants to kill you. A mere skeleton can rape you with combos and evasions.

Dark Souls is much better played on gamepad, because it is much easier to pull off blocks and attacks or make perfect timing for counter.

From my short time watching the trailers that was just the feel I got from the combat system - it was not a comment on the difficulty. Though I'm starting to get the same feeling as a few others have mentioned - if DIFFICULTY is the best feature of the game you keep mentioning it really doesn't sound very well rounded...

Nowadays there are hardly any truly challenging games and really satisfying at the same time. Difficult is the best description for this game, because it feels great when you defeat boss which can kill you with a mere fart. By using dodges, proper blocks, terrain advantages and other things. Demon's Souls made me remember how to truly enjoy gaming and Dark Souls continues that well.

It has nothing to do with god of war. There is no game that is as far away from god of war as Dark Souls. It is slow paced, atmospheric, and does not hold your hand. Hell it does not even limit you from going into areas you are not prepared to. It is a slow paced game where if you rush, you are dead.
But then again dead is literally a slap in the wrist. Get it.

Might be, might be. I never had a PS to actually play God of War so I don't know the details of how those play out either beyond a bunch of commercials showing you a dude in 3rd person jumping, dodging and swinging at enemies. So if this game DOESN'T feature a three-dimensional combat system of separately encountered groups where your attacks, blocks and dodges are performed by button combinations on a controller I am way off.

The system sure as shit doesn't look like the Diablo style ARPG, so I really don't see where everybody gets off throwing that label on it as if it explains everything. And since the primary focus of every single review/recommendation of it is "this game is HARD, but if you don't mind that it's pretty fun" the actual mechanics are pretty damn opaque to us uninitiated.

As far as it being played in third person nad having a lot of combat, yes, Dark Souls could be compared to God of War, as far as actual focus and gameplay style? Not at all, since in GoW you are easily able to dispatch multitudes of enemies, and have a character that feels rather powerful in some interesting setpieces. Dark Souls is more deliberate, slower paced, and your character does not feel like an overwhelming force (particularly since in the end, player levels or gear are secondary against knowing what you are doing), hell, even the most basic enemy becomes VERY dangerous in groups. Also, while God of War is billed as cinematic and has a loooot of dialogue from kratos, Dark Souls is sparse there, it does not even bother to cram the subplots down your throat (hell, you only get to understand some things by reading item descriptions AND background details), it is a... More subtle maybe? game.

Also, isn't Torchlight the one being compared to Diablo?

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Yes, Torchlight is the one being actively compared to Diablo. I was trying to express that both these styles of game fit in the ARPG category, so just saying that (like a lot of people seem to do) like it tells you much about the actual game mechanics isn't necessarily helpful.

Your explanation is pretty much the first one I've seen that actually explains anything about the game and combat beyond "you'll die a lot." So thanks; I had already purchased it but was strongly considering trading it away instead until I read this post

I am glad I could at least persuade you to try it. It is a great title, that being said, there are two things that are required for it to be properly enjoyed on the PC. First, you need to get DSFix, and maybe Gibbed's Intro Skipper, one allows you to increase the internal rendering resolution, because the game renders at like 1024x768 or something, same thing it did on consoles, and on higher resolutions it just scales. Not good. DSFix also has a bunch of other useful options, worth using.
http://blog.metaclassofnil.com/?p=258

The other, skips the FROM/Bandai Namco/etc splash screens, which makes testing DSFix much easier, since launching takes instants, not minutes anymore.

I'd heard about the DSfix, but the intro skipper sounds very useful too. If this game is as hard as it sounds I'll be happy to be able to play a lot of short games without the intro every time :P

Get both if you possibly can. Dark Souls is the best title on all platforms, in my opinion. It does require a pad, because it was made with a pad in mind, it was not made for a pc controller at all, though there are mods that improve the keyboard controls.

Torchlight 2 is the best Diablolike since Diablo 2.

I found the original Torchlight kinda dull to be honest.

I'm really not sure why either. Maybe because it was a little slower when compared to Diablo 2. I still can't figure out why I didn't enjoy it as much because it's a well made game.

Anyone else feel the same? Is the sequel any better?

The original was done in like 6 months. It was not the most polished title. Torhclight 2 is considerably more expansive than 1, better paced, it does have some issues like Outlander being rather boring to play as, but T2 is just amazing ¿.

Particularly in multiplayer. It gets really, really crazy in multiplayer.
