If you look at the top of the page, you should see the words "Home" then "Giveaways" then "Account ([A NUMBER]P) that number is the number of points you have. You get points automatically over time. You spend points to enter giveaways. The number of points each giveaway costs is listed on the giveaway's page, and it's the same as its price in the Steam Store (15 points=$15).

Oh, I see, heh. I just saw that you hadn't entered any giveaways yet, so I thought I'd lay it out just in case you were genuinely asking. Especially since when people really do ask these questions, the responses tend to be either sarcastic or "read the FAQ."

my point total only ever reaches the cap if a big bundle comes out or something, generally speaking it is usually pretty low.

I actually agree with OP. With the super high number of points, you have a ton of people entering into giveaways for games that really aren't that interested just to use up their massive amount of points. I mean, i'm an offender of this, i get points so fast that i enter into giveaways for games i don't really find appealing (magicka). If less points were handed out, people wouldn't enter into giveaways for games they weren't truly interested in and thus the chances of winning would increase for those that are interested in the game since there would be less entrants.

I don't know if this is discussed or explained somewhere, and if it is i'm sorry, please let me know.
But with this system in SteamGifts, I can have 300p in a couple of hours. This ability makes no need for this point thing at all.
So, wouldn't it be better if points are given for example 1% of the price instead of 5% ? So people would tend to spend points only for the games they really want.
