Not in any capacity trying to offend or discredit said thread/s, thread owners or posters but if you have a key for a game/DLC/anything else, why paste it as plaintext when you know for a fact that the bots will get it and if they don't the ninjas will? Would people not rather have the keys reach someone who'll atleast be likely to play and enjoy these titles? IMO it really isn't much of a hassle to substitute letters or make little riddles or even give them to others over private messages. I've seen time and time again how after 20 seconds the keys are already gone and how people complain about duplicates and such. So sad to see how that many games are going to freaking bots or ninjas that probably never even play them.

No. Wrong. And you're stinky.
Yes! That's what I've been saying!
Debateable. WIll comment :)

The most gifters, sadly, don't care.

I think I mostly post keys in the mentioned thread when I got the key for free, or it doesn't give CV (or both), or I think the game has too low quality to qualify for a giveaway (in my opinion) and I don't really care if it gets played or not. It's not really a difference to public giveaways I think - many games you create giveaways for in public won't get played either.
And you never know if the ninja plays the game or not. Just because someone grabs a key in mentioned thread doesn't automatically mean the game doesn't get played. (EDIT: ok to be honest, that's probably a rare case)
A bit sad is that many do not say that they claimed a key. (maybe many are unregistered?)
The bots are indeed annoying (if it's true these keygrabber exist on here!) and keys should be (at least a little bit) encrypted.

Well, I see a fair number of AA or indie games being posted. I even managed to snatch an indie game and and SpeedRunners recently (though one was in the Anti ninjas key drops and one was over DMs). It's true that it's very very unlikely for AAA games to be posted on there but I do see alot of games that I would play or DLCs for games I own and that are actually quite fun and well rated so I'd say it's less an issue of it having only bad shovelware games (That do exist and are a large part of key threads like this one tbh.) and more an issue of the ones posting the keys not caring enough about them going to the right hands. Granted, not everyone is the same and threads that are more protected against ne'er-do-well ninjas and bots are just as big as the Orphan Keys thread but still, sucks to have so many keys go down the bot drain. Also what's stopping unregistered people from making an account and thanking the people they took the key from properly? If you're gonna enter my lawn and take my garden gnome you better knock on my door and thank me for it.

Yeah you are right, not only "bad" games are given away in this thread. And yep it's a bit sad most games won't get played. But it's a general problem on SG sadly.
Hmm there could be reasons someone doesn't want to make an account. Or doesn't want to post anything on the forum and stay anonymous. But yeah not saying a word feels strange to me sometimes. When I get a gift in real life, I won't turn around from the gifter and leave with the gift in my hands without saying something to him. 😛

Only in real life you kind of have an obligation to, and even if you choose not to at the very least they can see your face and know who they gave it to. Though I suppose that doesn't really matter at all in the grand scheme of things since knowing who took your key/gift doesn't really do anything. Eh.

Finding fault with someone for the way they give away something just doesnt sit well with me.

Again, I'm not trying to criticize anyone for their altruism; I'm just finding an issue with the fact that I bet most (or at least a large amount) of these people know the keys are getting mostly and almost always to bots and if not bots then key thieves and so I'm proposing the question at the head of this discussion: "Orphan Keys? Why?", why orphan keys and not any other thread like it? I really like the idea as an idea, but in practice they aren't actually giving it away, they're throwing away. IMO it's like giving away concert tickets by putting them in a paper shredder. Maybe you're right and I can't judge people for giving away their own stuff and they totally have a right to decide what to do with it but this thread was just a genuine question I kept asking myself and wanted to see if people agree at all and if I'm just thinking about this the wrong way.

Calling ppl thieves for literally not saying thanks is wild btw. If you require gratitude, are you really gifting stuff or are you just exchanging something of value for gratitutde? Of course i understand saying thanks is just basic decency, but requiring it always felt weird to me.

I think you misunderstood or maybe I misspoke. I don't believe people are required to thank others for anything, though it is very rude not to. Maybe the term is a bit exaggerated but I stand behind what I'm saying. IMO giving something away isn't the same as throwing it out to the masses out your window the same way taking something isn't the same as sneakily snatching it away. I don't hate or even dislike ninjas but I disapprove of their sleazy attitude and lack of respect ( To me ninjas and bots are one and the same because I will never know which one got them.); I do, however, very much respect the ones giving things away, whether in giveaways or in threads like this or others. And still, while I respect them (and while I obviously don't disapprove of them giving away their old keys) I personally don't see a point in throwing them away (harsh terms but that's how I see it) and hoping someone who actually wants them will get them and not some bot or someone who probably isn't likely to even take the effort to look at what the key contains and who'll stick it into the activation prompt as soon as it's up. In the end I feel that lurking on that thread, taking keys and not having the decency to say literally anything, not "I took the key" or "thanks" or literally anything else is pretty damn scummy, and whether it's ninjas or bots who take them, I will never understand why people would rather paste them plaintext than encrypt the keys or even give them over DMs.

To say "thanks" after someone got something for free is basic manners.
Each one that don't do it got raised bad by his parents.

It don't need to be done because someone "demand" it.
Each one should do it from their own because it shows that this person respect the "gifter" and/or what he got.

And each one that don't repsect the "gifter" and/or what he got, should get nothing (in the future) or maybe a few slaps from the parents to correct the behavior...

Some of the keys are offered there because people aren't sure they'll work. That was part of the point of the thread, I thought.

True! Haven't thought of that, thanks :) Yet, still, I feel as if giving away these keys in a more "sterile" environment is still better than just throwing them out plaintext and letting Key-sus take the wheel.

Not everyone has the same amount of time to dedicate to such things. Better that they key is thrown out the window, as you say, than languishing unused, perhaps. I see it more like sticking it on the sidewalk with a free sign on it. You have no idea who takes it, but it's more likely used than put in the trash.

You're not wrong, but it's very unlikely the key will land in good hands. It's usually a place for collectors either way.

The main purpose of said threads is to drop keys that one either isn't particularly sure about, usually old stuff we're uncertain if it still works, or one doesn't care enough to put any effort into making a proper giveaway. And also for keys for other places besides steam that have a limited appeal in this forum, but those are more of an extra.
And I'm pretty sure that most of the comments saying "duped" or similar are meant to let know the user that dropped the key that it has already been used, not exactly complaining if you ask me.

But I'll agree that some sort of obscuring on the keys is preferable to just copy-pasting them as plain text and as such it should be encouraged, because keys as plain text only attracts bots and those are a nuisance.

If you have keys for games these you would like to see them played, you shouldn't giveaway them on sg at all. There is like 95% chance it will got to some autobot joiner, idle alt farm or collector who won't bother ever start it at all.

Yeah :( I feel like that's why groups like TalePlay are a thing, why "play the games you won month" events are big here and also why I regularly give away alot of my keys on there or on puzzle threads. Here's to hoping atleast most of my given games are played eh? :)

I gave away Hogwarts legacy, Horizon forbiden west, few copies of Days gone and Horizon zero down, some smaller unbundled games. Can confirm people on sg rarely actually want to play games.
Kinda lost my motivation to try do any giveaways at all as I don't have bundle rests last years and were just buying games directly for giveawaying them.

That sucks so bad. I assume that's how people must've felt when they decided to make these "mandatory play" groups. Maybe find or make a small group where people give away good games and actually play them :)

It give a part of members in the "play your win" groups and events that don't play the games and fake the play time and the acievements with programs.

And if they don't do it in a dumb way, you have nearly no chance to caught them.

There are some users who ask who wants the key and the first one who answers gets it. But not everyone does this, and I respect their decision because it is their key, they decide what to do with it. Then others try to encrypt it in some way, but anyway, there are people who take it and do not thank or maybe they were already used and did not know. I believe that those who do not worry about encrypting it do so because, in the end, there are users who take the keys and are not able to thank.

I'd risk that most of the games on SG go to people who won't play it to begin with.

I'm still not fully set on the rules I'd prefer - one wins hundreds of games and ignores them, others wins thousands but play them, somebody won only 10 and has no intention of ever playing them... I know I don't have control over the games after giving thrm away, but it still frustrates me every now and then. Then I move on, to return to the thought half a year later.

Being aware that I'm repeating what others have already said, and without taking your question as critical of the process that I (and others) choose to use:
I very much use that particular thread for keys that I am not sure are valid (either due to age, or if I am not sure whether they've been redeemed and so on). For those I would much rather throw them out in a situation where people/bots/aliens/etc. know there is a chance they are dud, rather than get someone's hopes up too much. If I've got greater confidence in the keys I'll use another approach.

Huh, I respect it. I guess it all comes down to personal preference. I personally couldn't, I'd rather someone solve the "encryption" and get bummed about it not working or being a dupe than to almost guarantee a person won't get it.
