I've been building my steam library for a few weeks now, as I recently decided I'd had enough of consoles moved on to PC gaming - I've loved the experience thus far and have a few games and have tried some F2P titles - but what I'm really missing is community, either in game or through a team/clan. Even though I have a couple of friends I play with regularly, it's not the same as when I'd play Halo/Gears/Mechassault (Way back when) and consistently be able to find a full team of people I can voice chat and game with.

What are your suggestions for VoIP on games & also, what games and communities could I get involved with? I like competitive multiplayer - I don't think I'm quite up to speed with any PC games to be competitive but I'd like to get better!

Go play some css. I started getting friends there :-)

:P It's funny that I like playing competitive but as a new PC gamer. I really do find it intimidating jumping on games like that and being the noob myself. I'm sure there are plenty of new player servers on CS though. Does CSS have a more solid community than CS GO?

Same with me. Years ago, I had no trouble getting a huge party to screw around in Halo custom games, but now I can only ever get a couple. I had a bit of luck with playing L4D2 (on PC) and frequenting a group of servers, but it took a while.

Even on Halo 4 I could easily get a party together for team throwdown or competitive/fun customs and find scrims. :) It does seem harder to find new players on xbox now most people sit in party chat.

Natural Selection 2 used to have great community (with microphones). Not sure if the new players that got it on the last sale use them though.

Need friends? There is a solution - Dota 2.

Honestly, my keyboard/mouse skills are lacking and I'm scared of being a feeder and letting my side down. So I've not played DOTA2 properly yet, if there are absolute noob rooms I'd totally play on those.

Bots, my friend. Keep practicing and play in public rooms later.

Ah, I might do that. It's a double edged sword. Can you find bot matches to practise in with others?

Your best bet is first finding a game you're really into and then finding a few local (well, as in good ping and reliably up) servers to frequent. I've long since given up on the truly competitive side of gaming (oh QWTF, how I miss thee) but I used to have a pretty great time playing of all things TF2 Prophunt (it's like hide and seek, basically, think it is more or less dead now though) on a couple servers where just about everyone was chatty and under the influence of something.

That sounds pretty crazy, I like TF2 a lot but haven't got involved in any PVP servers - just the mode where you take on waves of bots.

+1 but -1 at the same time...is that possible? Maybe I should give this a +-0 lol..

Team Fortress 2 is nice to play, but I would say it's only good with friends..otherwise the real teamwork is lost in the game :P

I'd like to play TF2 with friends, I only end up ever playing with two friends though. It's tough to really run a team as three.

Tf2 is a pretty good option if you find a server with friendly people. You can play it competitively as well once you learn the game a bit better.

I've enjoyed the games I've played, something about push to talk chat rustles my jimmies after being an xboxer though.

My advice: bind duck to shift and push to talk to control. Or push to talk to shift.

I miss friends to play with too, that has made me play much less these days. I'm not interested in TF2 in the slightest though, but CS:S, CS:GO are great.

If you voice chat I'd be happy to play with you, don't have CS though!

well... all i have to say is... fuck multiplayer.
But if you like it, try TF2, you can have a lot of fun on some servers, even when your team is full retarded... but watch out for traders... tey are... strange.

Starraft, maybe

But, in general you have to be in a real Clan to get real companions.
