these games last for hundreds of hours with custom maps

Even without custom maps, actually. Community is much more important, i.e. finding the right group of people to play with.

+1 for this.

I'm a L4D veteran. Played the first game on Garena (i currently play the second with friends) for 1 or 2 years before buying it on Steam. I had an awesome team of friends, we always played together, always the same ones and it was great, mainly because we were always doing hilarious shit along the way. We only played the original maps, we passed each campaign like 100 times and it was still fun, so as you can see this dude is right. The community is more important than the custom maps.
I mean, its good to play different campaigns once in a while for a change, but the team is the most important thing.

To be honest, L4D2 has horrible community, at least when it comes to public games. I would have gotten bored of it after 100 hours if it weren't for private group that focused on realism versus (with added mods for additional challenge). That pushed me to 350 hours. That group strongly encouraged using microphone (I think it's even obligatory now) and having someone to talk and mess around with while playing always makes things more fun.

It's also worth noting that I have ~100 hours in Alien Swarm which has only 1 campaign with 7 missions. I played with 3 friends from real life and that just proves it's not what you play, but with who you play.

the last time i played l4d2 there was hardly anyone playing like 4 games or so?

It must have been the time of day or something. I play with friends, nightly, and we usually have two or three games of 8 people going at a time.

Private/Friends Only groups are a must if you want to avoid the asshats that infest the internet.

borderlands 2

perfect.

You just need to buy 1 copy and run your steam offline so you can finish it on LAN while steam is on offline mode

Would like to know how it works precisely, you just use the same account in 2 different computers, that's it?

Download BL2 in 1 PC, copy the whole folder in another PC, sign your account there. Sign in offline mode.

Repeat

Huh. Never knew about this method. That's pretty cool. Though I'll never use it because I don't have LAN friends.

Magicka of course. Don't listen to guys that says "it's stupid and buggy", when you play with friends, nothing matters more than fun. And you will have A LOT of fun :D

Magicka is so much fun, the only reason I don't play it, is that non of my friends want to play it. -_-

Yes. It is fun with a full team. We spent our first hours randomly killiing eachother. Intentionally, or by accident, it was funny.

I just started Warframe(f2p) and i have to say that it looks very interesting and nice. And it suits your need of co-op cause this game is way better when you play with friends.

Pretty big fan of Warframe as well... I've thrown a bit of money their way as well as they're really involved with the community and are constantly putting out amazing content.

Borderlands 2, TorchLight2, Left 4 Dead 2, Mass Effect 3 (has an awesome co-op multiplayer, not player vs. player).

There's even a mod for Torchlight II that increases the multiplayer cap to 8 players if you happen to want to play this way.

Daydreamer has a great list, there. I would only add Castle Crashers and Terraria. My nieces (aged 7 and 9) play those two games together and they have a blast. (I only get to play with them when they don't kick me off my own computer. QQ)
