So, backgrounds and emoticons are not tiny cosmetic features in your book?
Are you even trying to make any point with your post?

Hit the metaphoric nail right on the head there I think.

Because when you reach level 10 you can use showcases and a chance to get foil cards. Also with every level you get other bonuses. Which is by far more than just cosmetic features like background and emoticons.

I know about the showcase you get once you hit level 10 and the 5 extra people you can have on your friend list each level. And I heard you can get a second showcase somewhere around level 20? Anyone any idea what else you can get and at which level?

Valve has said it's one Showcase every 10 levels.

At what level can I exit the program and go back to my old profile format?
Comment has been collapsed.
I personally preferred the old layout. It put right at the top the stuff I wanted to see, like comments. And it put stuff to the side the stuff that I didn't find that important, like what games the person was presently playing. Eh, but I guess it all depends on the information you prioritize.
I'm pretty easy. While I prefer the old one, I know Valve can't please everyone, so it's all good provided the majority is happy with the change!

i just wanted to get to level 10.. now that i'm there, i don't care too much anymore

Let people do as their wish. Stop trying to judge others behaviour, specially when it does not affect you in any way.

The trading card system is a rip off and nothing else. They give away worthless stuff that doesn't cost them a single cent and make a huge profit with it when users trade this crap on the market. Probably they were jealous of Blizzard and Diablo 3, so they decided to implement their own system to rip off kids.
I sold all my cards (which weren't many since the only game supporting it I play is CS:GO), got a few euros for it and that's it. Still a bit shocked that people are really stupid enough to pay a good amount of money for a worthless, digital trading card, but to each their own. On the other hand there are people who pay for Dota 2 or a Trading Card Beta invite (which I also sold) even though you can get both for free, so it's not really that surprising.

LEt me explain this. People have money. People like those cards. People decide to spend it on them. People have fun or get a sense of joy and completionism. People have fun. You rant in a forum because they are stupid. Guess who's not enjoying.

Sorry, if something doesn't make sense, it doesn't make sense. I already said 'to each their own'. The digital trading cards are worthless and the idea behind them is almost evil. It's pretty obvious, Valve doesn't have to invest any money (almost at least, only for implementing the system and then for the few bonuses you get) and gets bags of money in return. Same as Diablo 3 where people sell and buy worthless digital game items only for bragging rights while Blizzard makes money with each transaction. Of course you can spend your money however you want, but if you decide to use it as toilet paper I don't feel bad if I say it's a waste of money. Even if you told me that you enjoy using money as toilet paper.
Apart from that, they're called 'trading cards'. Not 'selling cards'. It would be perfectly fine if you could trade them or collect them yourself. I have nothing against Steam achievements for example, which is a nice feature. You have to do something and you get some kind of 'medal' in return. But paying real money for it is just weird from my perspective.
Don't want to start a flame war though. I think my thoughts are perfectly logical, but not everything has to be logical. People pay for getting advantages in f2p games, people pay for Diablo Or Warcraft items, people now pay for Steam trading cards. Who am I to say they shouldn't do that.

People put value on different things you know? You even said it yourself, some people are actually interested in collecting cards just because they think it's interesting. What gives you the right to say which hobbies are a "waste of money"?

A) Your thoughts are not logical
B) You are contradicting yourself
C) Stop treating the rest of people as if you were over them and in moral and logical high groud.

Any arguments you have? Seems like you are the one who is contradicting himself if you tell me that everything I say is wrong without having any arguments at all and then tell me I'm on a moral high ground.
The trading cards are a rip off, you have to pay money for them (at least if you want a complete set) and get nothing in return (at least nothing that would justify paying the current price for a full set). The cards don't even exist and can be duplicated ad infinitum. And actually they are, each time a new person joins the beta or a game that is part of the trading card mechanic is bought new cards appear out of nowhere, naturally lowering the value of existing cards. Plus new games will get added, again lowering the value of other cards. There is only one party that benefits - Valve, who make money whenever one of their completely worthless cards changes hands.
And not everything humans do is fine because it's a 'matter of taste'. There are a lot of incredibly stupid things humans do, and yes, many of them are not a matter of taste in my opinion. I firmly believe the slightly vulgar (sorry) saying 'Eat s*** - millions of flies can't be wrong' has some truth in it. I don't care what people do with their money, if they like getting ripped off - fine. But they're still getting ripped off.
My whole post was not directed against the people buying the cards anyway, even though I said you'd have to be stupid to buy them. Maybe I overreacted a bit and what I said there was stupid as well, I guess most people (including me) did similar stupid things in their lives already. So I correct and apologize myself - doing it is stupid, but the person doing it is not necessarily stupid as a whole. But what Valve does is a scam and nothing else in my opinion. Other companies do the same, but that doesn't make it any better.
Comment has been collapsed.
How is it a scam? There is no trickery involved. Yes, Valve is the one who makes money. That's how companies work. They do things that make them money or they won't exist (not saying valve wouldn't exist without cards but striving to find ways to make their company grow is a natural and obvious thing). Personally, I don't really give a damn about the cards so I don't buy them. I don't lose anything by not participating. The only people who are giving Valve money for trading cards are doing so of their own free choice while being well aware of what all the options are and what they're getting for their money. In a situation like that I don't see how that's a "Scam".
Yes, you're free to have the opinion that it's stupid and a waste of money. I kind of agree. But a scam...? That's not what a scam is. There is nothing fraudulent about this. Valve could charge $100000 for a non-essential service (cards/backgrounds, etc) and as long as they make it clear what it is for and what it does then if someone decides to buy it it's on them. It's not a scam.

It's called being open-minded, moron. Try it sometime.

I sold the cards for games I don't want and used the money to buy the cards I needed in order to make a full set, I never spent any of my own money.

Valve Profited......and??? If I was opposed to them making money then I would not be using steam. Valve profits from the games you purchase and the gifts you purchase to make giveaways on sg. I got some digital cards and Gabe Newell got a few pence from some other guy over the internet, I will sleep easy at night.

It is not about whether he deserves my money or not but he will get it, if I use the steam store/steam market etc that is just how business works.
Comment has been collapsed.
I agree. I hate that I cant complete the sets for all my games without spending money. I could do 1 set maximum.

I just like collecting them, and the freee stuff you get is cool, and i got loads of coupons now and profile showcase is nice
Comment has been collapsed.
I just got in the beta today, and enjoy collecting them, Im not doing anything different, I'm playing games which I normally play and I occasionally get a free card, I don't see the big fuss over it, don't like it, leave it alone, its quite simple.

I don't see how I'll ever get a full badge if the game only drops halve of the cards?!
Comment has been collapsed.
Showcases. And they're adding games (like Borderlands 2) so someone might still manage to get foil cards at some point.
Comment has been collapsed.
Good plan. I wasted my drops before I found about how foils worked :/
Only had HL2 drops left when I hit 10, and then all 4 were normals haha. Oh well!

I sold every card except for CS:GO ones, just because I wanted a background. But I see this trading card shit as a BIG scam from valve :/. Theoretically it's impossible for everyone to have even a badge for all games they own with cards (with that shitty drop rate), and it makes those crazy persons that can't stand NOT having a collection, put money into steam wallet just to but a few cards. So, hundreds of cards are being "traded" in steam market, and valve always gets a piece of the action :)

If you are not bothered about a badge, which is a tiny cosmetic feature, why don't you just sell all your cards, and buy a background and emoticon cheap on the market?
You'd get most of the benefits and make a profit! You can get the XP for your level from doing the Community Ambassador badge so you wouldn't lose that either...
