this feels like a trap, so now going to put my neck on the chopping block anyway:
Joker
The Dark Knight
Star Wars: Rogue One
Comment has been collapsed.
Ah so probably not a Christopher Nolan joint ;) in which case, maybe a superhero film...
My hot takes, again:
Deadpool & Wolverine
Iron Man
Spider-Man 2 (I don't think this movie is over-rated... but you might ;) )
Comment has been collapsed.
I saw Deadpool 1 & 2 and was underwhelmed. I think Ryan Reynolds has become unbearable lately.
Iron Man was fine. I was more let down as things just continue to drag in the MCU. (Homecoming being the biggest bummer I watched because...)
I think Spider-Man 2 is still the greatest comic book movie ever made.
Comment has been collapsed.
No Patterson
Top gun is sooo overrated. But no cruise and no planes.
American History X is very good but some parts are really simplistic to move the story along.
I get why it would be considered for this list.
Suplee being a bag of crap is weird when you watch My Name is Earl like
He don't like crab man...
But no Nazis
Comment has been collapsed.
I like me some Birdman even with its wonky bits.
But yeah it could easily be argued as overrated for that year.
No Keaton in my movie though.
Also I think Spotlight is more overrated. Birdman had some fun and jazz and one gimmicky idea; Spotlight is just a regular film. Good but not great at anything really.
Comment has been collapsed.
Terminator one is good but it does have cracks from its budget and age. But I think it holds together very very well. T2 has higher highs of course but furlong is so cringy at times that it really hurts the movie. "Are you calling mu-wah a douchebag?" 🤢
All blade runners are boring. There's a bunch of goofy stuff like the androids flipping around dressed like dolls and such that just like.. what? And the 19 versions including the one where they just drop n-bombs throughout. Visually impressive but empty.
And then 2049 did the same thing. Visually impressive but empty.
But I said no robots, no Gosling, no Denis Villanueva and I'm adding no Ridley Scott.
I love me some Silence of the Lambs. I think all the acting is so strong
The only real thing I fault is the convenience of Hannibal wearing a guard's face.
But I'm also willing to admit I'm bias.
No Foster and No Hopkins.
No lambs or FBI.
Comment has been collapsed.
No horses
Hugh Glass as a real man
Not as pretty
Man the Revenant looked good and tom hardy was fantastic. I can understand the slow pace and isolated feel being a turn off: and that the man vs elements story is sort of like torture porn in a way.
Also the movie I'm thinking is shorter
Comment has been collapsed.
Both overrated. I explained thoughts on Gump below.
No war thou.
Green Book is alright. The backlash seems way more extreme than it should be for a well done if simplistic movie.
The movie I'm thinking of isn't as "uplifting" or "heartwarming"
Comment has been collapsed.
Haven't seen Chicago
Not a musical
Big Lebowski I get. It's hype is insane but like it does have good moments.
Not a corn bros pic
Ferris is the best of those teen 80s fluff pics honestly.
But the movie I'm thinking is not a comedy
Not teen
Not fun (not intended to be)
Comment has been collapsed.
I didn't see Infinity War. By the time they actually got around to it it's like
Y'all had 30 movies and time traveled to unkill everyone like
Deflated stakes for sure so why bother.
And BP getting a best pic nom when the special effects looking ps2 AF is a joke.
Not a marvel movie though
Comment has been collapsed.
The Godfather
The Shawshank Redemption
The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King
Comment has been collapsed.
Haven't seen LotR. But no orcs/dwarves/elves or kings.
Godfather gets overblown for sure but it's still very good.
Not a mob movie
Shawshank I find doesn't get the same fervor when people talk about great movies. It's like everyone accepts it as really good movie passively.
Not a jail movie.
Comment has been collapsed.
In fact, I don't think any of these movies are overrated.
Titanic
Barbie
Fight Club
Comment has been collapsed.
All good movies
I think fight club might be the weakest outta the lot though
Titanic has one of the most genuinely terrifying scene put to film. Unmatched by any horror movie. When they hear the water in a distant hallway. Holy smokes dude. The only thing that has came close to making me as anxious was Swallow cause I watched it while my wife was pregnant and seeing Hunter hold that dirt had me sweating bullets.
No boats in the movie I'm thinking of thou.
Every time I watch Barbie I laugh and cry. It's made with such love when it should be the most corporate thing in the world.
The movie I'm thinking of is corporate as hell.
Fight Club is such a bro movie. It's a great time and it's like really good to start viewers on a path to more and more layered and complex films. The acting is solid and it's just so good and grimey.
Very close in ways to the movie I'm thinking but also not. Does share an actor thou.
Comment has been collapsed.
Gladiator is a fine movie, but that's it.. fine.
It's wet design really pulls it together but outside of the actual coliseum fights I only remember the guy touching grain.
More modern setting for mine.
Good Will is good but feels somewhat formulaic. Damon's haircut is terrible but the acting is solid enough.
My movie not Boston thou
And no math.
Gravity I haven't seen but
No space
Comment has been collapsed.
I was working off The Dark Knight being "closest" implying a Heath Ledger movie. I think the average reviews of 6/10 are pretty generous, I put it more like 3.5/10. I'm all up for a Terry Gilliam fever dream but this one just doesn't work well, even with the substitute actors.
Next round of guesses, bearing in mind these are movies I think are overrated and mileage may vary
Frozen
The Curious Case of Benjamin Button
The 40 Year Old Virgin
Comment has been collapsed.
Very smart to work off of that.
I realize I conflate Dr.Parnassus with Mr.Magorium's Wonder Emporium
At least the one about the sad store is kinda memorable
In a 5/10 way.
Honestly I think Gilliam movies are overrated as a whole (except 12 Monkeys)
Never saw frozen or button
Not animated, no pitt and not a Judd Apatow movie.
Here's a hint that won't help anyone
Utah punks love this movie. They talk about it all the time.
And it's not SLC Punk. That movie feels like an episode of Malcom in the Middle with how Lillard talks to camera and punks are so dense they don't even realize Bob dresses as a homage to Travis Bickle from Taxi Driver unless you sit them down and tell them. I saw it one time and was like "oh that's it? Yeah I'm good never again" and they made the sequel and filmed a Screeching Weasel concert for it and I didn't go to the concert cause i had work but like.. man i wish i called in cause that wouldve been sick.

Sid and Nancy comes to mind, but I think you already excluded biopics
American Psycho
The Professional

You probably had the same experience as I did of a lot of people saying how great it was and then after watching I though "meh" The only thing I really remember is that there's an entire scene of them comparing business cards.
I think I'd like to play Dishonored if that key is still available
Comment has been collapsed.
The Shawshank Redemption :D
Or else
The Green Mile
Escape from Alcatraz
Comment has been collapsed.
Hey oh!!! Cool Hand Luke.
A movie that feels like it has religious implications but is ultimately better if you ignore all that completely and just have a nice time with George Kennedy and Paul Newman.
So pick a game
Or double it and give it to the next person?
Comment has been collapsed.
I agree about leaving the religious aspect to one side, of course parallels can be drawn but it's a great movie even without them. The end made me angry the first time I saw it (thankfully ad free) but I realised after that it really couldn't end any other way. While I suspect many people crave the karmic injustice's comeuppance of the Shawshank Redemption, this movie I feel hews closer to the way the world really is.
Prize-wise, unless you're really desperate to shift your keys I'd be happy to let the next guy/gal have a double treat, still enjoying your previous generosity, very slowly downloading Mafia over public wifi on my breaks.....it's gonna take a while 🫢

I haven't seen Crash or The Notebook or Gravity
No Gosling in my movie though and no space
Dune is insanely overrated. I found it so slow and flat. Honestly any Villeneuve movie can fit here.
His best being Arrival (thanks to Amy Adams mor than anything) and his worse being Enemy. I hate Enemy.
But I'm not thinking of a Villeneuve movie. It doesn't have space. No brolin or chalamane.
Comment has been collapsed.
I personally haven't watched Crash out of all the movies I listed here but that's one Oscar-winning movie that most of my friends told me to not watch because it was that bad.
You're right about Dune. I think out of all the latest hyped movies, Dune was the biggest offender. The story went absolutely nowhere in its 2 and half hour run time. It was an absolute super snooze fest.

The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford (2007)
Comment has been collapsed.
It's an interesting film with some fine acting and themes. I admit despite growing up with a plethora of westerns thanks to my parents I struggled to recall many westerns without shootouts, even the comedies. I thought it might have been Rio Bravo at first, the siege/shootout at the end is such a minor component of the overall film.
If it's alright with you and the next bloke I might actually put my hand up for a game this time, Chasm if it's still available. Thanks for keeping this up, I don't have alot of time to browse at work but it's a nice brain teaser when I can.
Comment has been collapsed.
You're absolutely right about that but it says something that he still stands out even amongst all the high level actors (Hudson, still in his heyday, Taylor towering over things as expected and also James Dean's still present bright-new-thing status).
Some actors seem to have luck, I'm thinking especially of Kirk Douglas in The Strange Love of Martha Ivers, that set them right off on a path of recognition while others can take years (of still impressive and consistent performances) or more even before success finds them.

Activated. Thank you!
For everyone who also tried, it's a release date :)

Adam McKay did very loose biopics with Big Short and Vice
Not about banks
Not politics
I actually don't know what catch me if you can is
It's one of those really embarrassing gaps I have in movies
Like why have I seen Pet Semetary Bloodlines but not certified classics?

Overrated movie:
Forrest Gump
The Breakfast Club
Everything Everywhere All at Once
Comment has been collapsed.
Forrest Gump is for sure overrated. I think it slides from passable to being hailed as great by being quotable. Like if you're thinking of "Momma always said" it's gotta be good right? Earworm logic.
But no war in my movie.
I hate the Breakfast Club. John Hughes has like 2 good movies and then stuff like long duck dong and the "Take off your glasses, you were pretty all along" kinda trash just gets set aside because people love the soundtrack or something.
Also we just gonna ignore the kid brought a gun to school cause they spent an afternoon being ignored by the teacher and smoking weed.
Not brat pack.
Not teen.
ETEWAAO
Being the longest movie title ever
I love it
But I see how the emotional momocan seem manipulative and the action might not blend for some.
But no multi verse
Comment has been collapsed.
By my mind, Donnie Darko and Blair Witch Project are about as overrated as movies get. In fact, when I saw BWP at the theater, people got pissed at me when I started laughing at the absurdity of it all.
I'm not interested in winning games though, lol.
Comment has been collapsed.
Donnie Darko is garbage. The middle school philosophy, the pointless nature of forcing the movie to loop. the just waste.
Is up there in the "Why do we still talk about this position?" Pantheon.
But no time loops in my movie.
Also BWP gets my goat because people act like it incent a genre that was around way before.
The movie I'm thinking of isn't found footage
Comment has been collapsed.
I'll take the obvious three off the table right away.
Aliens
Terminator 2: Judgement Day
Mad Max 2: The Road Warrior
Comment has been collapsed.
Alien is better than Aliens. Let me explain; I hate newt. She sounds like a dental drill and I find her addition detrimental to the film.
T2- the same but Edward Furlong
But liquid metal robot is so cool I still say it's better
Never saw Mad Max 1
But if we talking better sequel with that Fury Road is 10/10
No aliens robots or deserts
Comment has been collapsed.
Might be showing my age but it's really a classic, not just of sci-fi either. Whether younger sci-fi fans want to admit it or not it really paved the way for so many movies after it. Though I admit alot of my sci-fi faves are "old school". At least I got to mention A.I. without my seemingly customary experience of having random internet people try to convince me they're aliens at the end 🤦♂️
If it's ok & still available I'd like Blade of Darkness, my colleague reminded me this week that it's actually the game better known as Severance back in the day (spoilers: I'm old) and I remember having a decent bit of fun with that.

I got GOG keys to hand out and to keep them from getting ninja'd decided to make a game of it.
I'll state the genre of movie I'm thinking of
You can guess as many times as you want, but you can only make one comment with 3 titles until I reply then you can post another. If I have multiple movies being guess you can make a comment on each
Winning one does not mean you can't enter another. Feel free. It's all about the getting the correct guess.
Ask for hints, I'll answer if I think it won't make it too easy. Hints do not need to be attached to a guess.
