you're ignorant. get informed. there're three groups targeting Steam, EA, Battle.net, LoL and other services with DDoS.

and if you don't know what DDoS, then you might be part of the problem. install a firewall and protect your PC.

Must be some hackers again. At the moment, hacker groups are going crazy with DDoS'ing Steam.
Just hope they don't hack into the main servers and steal our account details :/

Hacking and DDoSing is different, hacking is very hard. I don't think you have to worry too much. :)

I know, but after they DDoS the servers, they could hack into them and steal our account information.
You remember the PSN hack, right? 30 days down and all account data stolen.

The PSN servers got hacked, not DDosed.

That's what i am saying! Firstly, DDoS so noone can change their passwords and then HACK INTO the servers and STEAL the account information.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

If they DDoS, how are they gonna hack into the servers if they aren't reachable? One is a breach, the other is not, and they are mutually exclusive of each other. If someone was going to try to breach then they wouldn't try to DDoS first and draw attention to themselves. A breach is something you do quietly without notice.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Hmmm.. Good point!
As i read, the way they did it with PSN, was that they firstly DDoS'ed the normal frontend servers. (The user-interface, store, things like that), and then they hacked into another server that holds all the account information.
I'm not entirely sure though...

Indeed it's possible that an attacker could use a DDoS as a diversionary tactic, but any security team would have to be blind not to see it. It would also mean that the one being attacked would have to have their servers spread across several networks and have them be able to run independently of each other. In Steam's case this is not possible as all the servers would eventually need to phone home, such as to a central key database for activating games, customer database, etc. In this instance most of their servers are reachable and the ones that aren't don't time out from a lack of return traffic, they simply respond back with a backend error or a blank page in this specific case.

That's why all evidence points to this not being DDoS. A likely assumption is that Valve is being their usual spastic selves.

I've worked in a corporate datacenter for 19 years managing security in case you are wondering. What I see happening with Steam right now doesn't look anything like any DDoS I've ever seen.

I too have worked at datacenters since the late 1990's, but in todays day and age, you can't count out many possibilities. IMHO, there are many attention seeking manchilds out there and many copycats. An the gaming community, there are many. A DDos attack from these people are a possibility. Or Valves servers are running on P3 processors with a T-1 connection. Shit, once at my old job, someone brought a down a server because a guy thought it was a good idea to charge his iPod on a Cisco router.:-P

Again anything is possible. :-)

Indeed, anything is possible. Since I don't work for Valve I can only speculate. Unfortunately much of what has been thrown around these last few days has been nothing but speculation. Once the rumor of DDoS took off and Kotuku was stupid enough to reprint it, everyone jumped on the bandwagon. It's possible that other services are being DDoS'd now in response to all this excitement but I can't comment on that as I don't really follow any of the common gaming services except for Steam. So I just look on in amusement as certain people are in utter awe at all the leet Twitter haxors popping up from out of the woodwork regaling tales of their skilled exploits and taking credit for Valve's internal problems.

At the same time, I find amusing the knee jerk reaction on people blaming Steam. IMHO it's hard to believe that even if all of Steams active users are in a scramble in buying and trading cards, it would bring down the Steam servers. The data involved in those transactions is minuscule even if people are constantly refreshing to update pages.

As for now, I just wait and see what transpire in all the connection issues. Those people at Steams IT dept must be pulling some serious hours for the last few weeks.

Well, I don't know. You should look on Facebook. Apparently nowadays if your friend hadn't logged out of his FB account and you happen to notice that then you're a "hacker" and you "hacked" his FB account.

People are so dumb nowadays. Or it's easier to see because everyone has access to the Internet and to writing one's mind.

Not really. I use the term "hacker" synonymously with all kinds of activity that could never be construed as actual hacking (i.e. scripting, game cheats, code modding) -- that doesn't mean I'm stupid, it just means I'm not anal enough to care about the specific definitions.

"Hacking" is a catch-all term in this day and age, whether you like it or not.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

funnily enough, every action that you mentioned, scripting, modding, etc. is in some way hacking. it can be used in various way correctly. but hacking is not for crying out loud ddos or as some people think, loging in some account that left there his/her username and password. if you really think that the term "hacking" is term for anything these days, then you are part of the problem.

Hackers are not crackers.
Hackers builds and makes good things, while crackers breaks in things and steals stuff.
This is not the same.
I am blaming the media for misleading information. :c

Gaben sat on the server and broke it. Now the Steam team is looking for a replacement (not a replacement of Gaben, I mean a replacement of the server :P), but they need a very specific one. It must support G.A.B.E.N. technology (General Activity Before Eating Noodles).
Please be patient, and have a good day.

Anyone else think that valve is just going along with this whole DDoS story just to keep from looking bad? I recall quite clearly that steam has been having issues starting as far back as the smissmas update. I think valve caused this themselves and now they're probably really glad that people are believing that it was caused by a couple of stupid kids DDoS'ing their servers.
