Hello steamgifts users. I want to start by saying this ain't another thread to compare computer specs and to see who's got the biggest D.

What do you guys think about the specs that games ask for to be played in decent fps with decent graphics in the present?

My personal opinion: Games these days ask for a lot. I feel like developers don't want to optimize anything. The money hunger is too big.

For example, Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor's recommended system requirements are: i7-3770 + hd 7950.... which in my opinion is a lot
And since when can a difference between an i5 and i7 can be seen gaming-wise?...

Another example can be Far Cry 4's recommended system requirements (i5 + GTX680).

I'm starting to think that soon we'll need 1000$ i7s with GTX Titan in order to meet the minimum requirements.

I currently own a i5-4670K and a HD 7870XT and I feel that in less than an year I'll be forced to upgrade.

graphics evolved like what, 20% from the last gen, and we need 200% better specs to play games that look almost the same, I know there are more effects and stuff but still

The game examples you chose are games that are not optimized well for PC, at all. Go Ubishit.

I agree, but more and more games come out like that. I'm really afraid when GTA5's gonna come out.

SoM ran really well on my PC when I didnt expect it to (high settings, FX8350 + 660Ti). I thought it was fairly well optimised.

What if I told you that you dont need to have the game maxed out to play it. Sometimes the game looks just fine even without 16x anisotropic filtering.
Also, If you compare the price/performance of the new gtx 970, you can tell that the games arent the only ones getting better. I bet that when the rest of the 900 series comes out, it will be a small step for man and a huge step for the pc budget gaming

i don't mind buying the console itself, but the games cost more. steam has a lot of insane sales. consoles have sales too, but still cost more.

What do you mean with "Goes on like this?" System requirement growth is at an all time low, so your computer will last a lot longer than it ever has in the past. We are just seeing a bump in system requirements because we recently got a new console generation.

I always hear people running games below the minimum.

This is what always happens when a new generation of consoles comes out. Same thing happened when the 360 and PS3 came out - PC requirements suddenly exploded. But the good thing is that they will not go much higher from now and then they will stay where they are for a long time (more or less).

It is always a bad idea to buy a new PC right before or shortly after new consoles come out. I hate that I had to buy one because my old PC malfunctioned, if you'd buy a new gaming grade PC in one year you can be pretty sure that it will be good enough to play (almost) any new title for the next 3-5 years with a decent framerate. My 2009 PC (Core2Duo e8400, 4gb ram, ATI 4890) was good enough to play most (even new) games until last year, when it malfunctioned.

My 2007 PC (E8400, 4GB DDR2, GTX 650(GPU:2013)) still plays the games on medium-high with ease. I never pay attention the recommended requirements. They always exaggerating.

System requirements seem to be a lot more generous these days than they were 10-15 years ago. A modern game usually runs well on something right around min specs, where in the late 90's, it would be just about playable (obviously there were a lot of exceptions to this rule back then, as well as now). Not only that, but system requirements are growing a lot slower these days. During the late 90's, a computer lasted 2-3 years before it was unable to run new games, these days a mid-range computer will last you a good 5 years.

Consoles are slowing down, multiplatforms games need to run on consoles too, which are very slow compared to high-end PCs.

I'm pretty sure they are overestimating requirements, just to keep someone from suing, because that's how USA works.
