That was what I thought. I had 2 keys for the game and checked 1 this way and then when I sent it to the winner of my giveaway they claimed the key had already been activated and sent me a screenshot of it. I thought they were full of it, but wanted to ask around first to make sure I hadn't burned they key by checking it. Thanks much for your response.

There is no way to "check" if a key has already been used or not. If you don't have it, once you try to activate it on your Steam account, it will be automatically added to your library and thats it, end of story or it will say it's a duplicate key (if someone already used it). If you already have it, it will only say that you already own the game, regardless if it was activated by someone previously or not.

I have Hamilton's Great Adventure on my account already. I also won a key for the game at a LAN party, but want to be sure no one else activated this key already (so I can give it away). How do I check to see if it has been used already?
If I punch it into my steam client will it just burn the key?
