Microsoft Security Essentials (MSE) not Updating Definitions.

For some odd reason, my MSE isn't updating. Yes I have a genuine version of Windows. I'm running Windows 7 Professional, and I have a internet connection of course. The last time it was updated was 2 days ago, and whenever I hit the update button it show's that it's starting update, but a second later it just switches back showing the button again.

I have the same problem mine is last updated on 1/20/13 11:27pm Eastern Time.

It must of fixed itself. This was happening just a few days ago. If I get anymore responses like this, then I'm closing the thread.

Same here. Connection error with Windows Defender on Windows 8 starting today. Last updated on Jan 14th.

Well anyways, I found a manual download for MSE definition updates, if anybody wants it, here.

To install just Run as Administrator and you're set.

To be honest, MSE used to be good, but the last couple of months it has been the worst in independent tests. I myself use Avast, it has a free version which works great and I haven't noticed any performance issues with it either.

I would link a source, but I am unable to find this at the moment. I believe http://www.av-comparatives.org/ is one of the links, but I am currently not able to visit this website.

Well I have have Malwarebytes for the scanning mainly. I mostly have MSE for the active protection.

That's the problem, it doesn't pick up on a lot of 0-day stuff. Which is most of the time why you have active scanning. And also why you want it to be updating ;)

Looks like mine updated itself a few hours ago, but now it won't when I try to (probably because it's up to date). I don't know what to tell you other than manually update it like you have and wait it out.
