The Steam Summer sale is just around the corner! We're going to try something different with the event this year. While there will still be an event and rewards, we won't be featuring special trading cards, or any mysterious cards in the lead-up to the sale. Keep your eye out for more details when the sale launches, it should be a fun event.

Some clarification concerning the wording.

we won't be featuring special trading cards, or any mysterious cards in the lead-up to the sale

These are two separate sentences. You can't take a part from the second and combine it with the first.

we won't be featuring special trading cards

meaning: no sale cards, period.

or any mysterious cards in the lead-up to the sale

also, additionally no mystery cards prior to sale

Saying there will be cards during the sale just not before is, unfortunately, wrong. Also:

going to try something different with the event this year

just delaying cards for a week wouldn't really qualify as 'something different'

This.

(That fucking announcement though... doesn't not inspire confidence in this so-called "fun" event they'll be announcing since the last several have all been lackluster).

call me cynical but i find the timing suspicious. they waited until everyone who buys cards to sit on for the sale badge had gotten their purchases in before making the announcement. i would've saved my few cents from card sales to put towards a game if i'd known, as surely (some) others would've done too.

I see what you're saying but at the same time we kind of just always made assumptions that cards will be there every 'event'.

During Lunar you couldn't without spending, so... we'll see.

wasn't there a "free" amount of tokens given upfront without buying anything with cash money? i seem to remember the ~opening of the red envelope and getting some in relation to how much i've spent in the past or something. might've been a fever dream tho, that sale wasn't very memorable outside of the pig emotes anyway.

Dependant on the previous spendings on the Steam Store, but yeah.
Seems from some screens in this topic we are in for a repeat of that... not that interesting :/

I hope it won't be saliens again. I like games but it was so hollow and boring soulless to Monster Summer Game.

Hopefully not, though taking the words literally "something different" would suggest anything done before to be off the table.

so should i craft my sets now or wait till the sale?

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

No point in not waiting. If it turns out there is literally no reward for crafting badges, you're not really losing anything by waiting a week.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

No harm in waiting. Sure there might not be special cards but that doesn't mean it couldn't be like there's a mission to craft a badge, or fill up a meter by crafting badges or something like that. I'm not in a hurry for levels so personally I'm just going to hold onto my sets until there's an event they're useful for.

wait till next sale maybe? if your going to craft them it's better to wait a week than to find out you could have gotten something after you crafted them.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

exactly. just wait. If there is any reward this sale for crafting the badge you can decide yourself, whether or not its better than extra cards.

They aren't getting huge profits from the sales tax for sale cards so they will increase discounts to drop earnings even more, how does that logic work? The "fun" event will be some stupid DDoS thingy again that nobody cares for except getting a badge with scripts, like usual.

I would much rather get a game with bit less discount for free than have to pay for a cheaper one. But at least Gaben did a favor to the competition by removing one of the only things that made Steam stand out. So if I have to waste actual money on a game, I will buy it where it's cheapest even if it's Epic or whatever platform.

1€ to rent them for a month, not buy. Also haven't seen anything I'm interested there yet so not a real alternative.

Steam doesn't take the games out of your account if you stop paying a monthly fee. On Steam I can collect tons of games I will never play just because I get them for free and maybe play them years later if I ever feel like it. Also everything of interest on MS I already own on Steam. So why would I ever pay 10€ per month for a rotating selection of games I can play for a moment and then have them removed suddenly? Since that's the real price after the discount period is over, for that much even Humble monthly has a far better chance of containing something of interest and I would get to keep the games.

Same with programs in MS store, no real selection there so I'll stick to installing real programs instead of app crap. Also part of the reason I'm not going to support their store for games either unless they bring something actually interesting.

You do realize that we are talking about a subscription? It's 1€ now for couple months, not 1€ once and keep forever. Unless you only ever play games during those couple months it will become 10 or you stop having access to the games. This future is what I was talking about. Or were you talking about actually buying single games from MS store?

I couldn't care less about what others find cool or not, even if I had 20k games on Steam I would still mostly play the couple I am actually interested in and would have bought even with real money. Like I paid $94 to back Pillars of Eternity 2, but not going to give MS 1€ to support crap I don't want.

Edit: seems like it's actually just 4€/month for the PC game pass, 1€ for now. But will probably go up to 10€ when it's out of beta and they have enough games.

It better be fucking worth it is all I'm going to say. Sale events have gone downhills in the past years so hopefully this means they will not provide cards and instead focus on making sale events actually fun for once, and not that they are simply not providing cards because "reasons".

we won't be featuring special trading cards ... in the lead-up to the sale

sounds like there still be cards?

or maybe it refers to mystery cards only?

No way to know for sure at this point in time, but it certainly suggests we won't be getting cards from crafting badges. Guess I'll sit on my pile of sets for another 6 months, heh.

The full quote is "we won't be featuring special trading cards, or any mysterious cards in the lead-up to the sale."
Unless that was modified past 4h. So no, def. No cards.

Maybe is kinda ambiguous to test the waters. If enough people complain, maybe they add cards after the sale begins

Permalink

It's not ambiguous at all. People just massively lost the ability to read... somehow.

Permalink

People just don't want to believe there's no trading cards this time.

That is the most logical conclusion since the announcement is crystal clear.

Permalink

Hopefully this is the return of achievement hunts then? I know some people will ruin it using unlockers and swapping save files with each other but I know myself and a few others would enjoy it. I wonder if Valve intends to phase out trading cards soon, I'm sitting on thousands of drops because I don't like idling my games...maybe it's time to pull that trigger and sell them while I can.

2FA and here we go plus you could set all the parameters as you wish and it'll take about an hour to sell 1000 cards.
Or even faster.
the irritating thing I can't overcome is you have to confirm those deals manually from the phone but after time it's also done pretty fast.

Maybe we will have another event where we compete by crafting badges and get sale cards, so they didn't want to ruin that by having people craft before the sale. If there is no reward at all, at least I can make many times more money by selling the sets instead of mystery cards.

Let's hope the sale gives us something to do with six months of accumulated trading cards... :) Would be nice to get rid of them... :)

If they have decided to really render them useless, it's time to sell the cards instead of crafting and find another game to play.

Ugh, after going to all this trouble, there's no way I'm going to sell these stupid cards... :) I can see crafting all the badges just to get rid of them, and saying ok, we're done now. :) But turning the whole mess back into wallet money seems a bit anticlimactic. :)

Kinda curious about what's going to happen. I seem to remember there was one sale where crafting badges did something but I don't remember what. Like there were different teams, something like that? Can't remember at all. :(

I'm pretty sure first day everyone was "how the heck are we going to do this?" then the level 1000 badges came in and the aliens just got obliterated by all that gear. Then Valve added upgrade for upgrade till 1million became max.
Didn't get in a group that reached that though.

Mine were never bought so turning them into a virtual currency would still be a plus, only thing lost would be time to trade them to usable sets. The ""fun" event" will be some retarded DDoS clicker like always no doubt. Gaben imagines that's the best fun anyone can imagine while everyone else just scripts that crap because it actually is no kind of fun ever.

Fun event = another clicker game all of us will play through a browser UserScript or external program?

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

well, there will be still something, the 2cents per each card market fee income is pretty huge for valve with like daily 100k sold cards per card day (i know it is more during the sale but it ends up around 100k/day as average with the additional 1 month) so around 40X0,02X100kX10=800k usd free income.

I am looking forward to something new, cards were boring, many exploited with additional accounts and actually the lunar sale rewards motivated me to buy more on steam than the 1new card for 10usd spent rewards during summer/winter sale.

With XBox Pass, Google Stevia and uPlay Whatever-it's-called for free or $1 I find less reasons to buy games. Valve should step up their game if they want to keep the lead.
