So, out of the blue a Valve employee messages you on Steam and says he "accidentally" reported you and you have to click a certain link to avoid the incoming ban?

Leaving common sense aside (because no Valve employee will ever, EVER, message you), if you go into panic mode, check

  • this Steam group if the profile messaging you is a member of that group and/or
  • this list if the profile wears the official Valve employee badge.

Or, maybe, check if the supposed Valve employee has the following gift in her/his inventory ;)

Leaving common sense aside

I think you missed this ;)
BTW, check the forums for how often people fall for this scam and afterwards ask for help here

I have to agree with him/her.
Your "steps" are a total waste of time/brainpower.

It's like saying:
If you see a landmine and leave common sense aside.
check:

  • the "I'm standing on a landmine and need help" steam group
  • the "how to disarm a landmine while standing on it" tutorial
  • if you have a nailclipper in your pock....eeerm...inventory

No....just no...

Yeah, it should be "besides common sense they just don't do that. Ever."

A lot easier than remembering a group to check, and item to look for...

To add onto this, make sure that the same information matches, not just the name and image since they can be copied (this is a tip more for trading) since of course: at the end of the day, no professional institution is ever going to contact you via unofficial means like this, like Steam so you can do all the checks you want to see if it's a scam or not but it's 100% a scam just because they won't be contacting you.

But also dang, I just clicked a bunch of profiles to see that gift and they were either private or their inventories were private (and even if I do get in, they may have gifts private).

Pretty sure that's just an Inspect Element joke. Valve employees get the Valve games I think (there's a sub for that, check SteamDB), but it wouldn't make sense to give them every single game on the platform just because they work on it. Imagine if a supermarket cashier could get everything in the store for free... Doesn't make sense, right?

Long time ago, when Valve Employees had public accounts (so, over 10 years ago), people would see various employees with thousands of games on their profile (and only playing 2 or 3 of them).
So unless there was a policy "you must but everything as Gaben needs his 30%", they did give all the stuff to employees.
No idea if still true.

And in those times, when there barely was 1000 games released on Steam every year, it wasn't that much of a issue to give those games as a bonus. Especially since it's digital, which means there's no actual supply lost (as opposed to supermarket cashier, where store would lose a thing they could sell to customer when they give it to cashier -).

Makes sense, I guess.

Especially since it's digital, which means there's no actual supply lost

Go tell that to the triple A gaming companies. :D

I think Triple A companies care less about losing supply and more about losing demand... Just turning 20k "first world prices" people from pirates into buyers is one million dollars exchanging hands...

Don't ever click links in Steam chat

Wasn't there a thing where a .jpg image link disguised the actual link?
But yes, even if it's a friend, it's better to just search for the link itself using google or another safe search engine.

You still need to be in the Valve's network to activate it so the sole gift is not enough

Then I want a gift AND that precious IP, of course!

Stay safe out there Amano, don't ever click on unknown links and stay cautious of anything suspicious.

Scams aside, I've never seen the "Entire Steam Library" thing before, that's actually hilarious. That is literally all the games. ALL OF THE GAMES. Unlimited games. INFINITE GAMES.

The problem is, if you're gullible enough to fall for this, i don't think you'll be the type of person to google and check if it's a scam, so this doesn't really help anyone.

There's no need to verify their identity. Regardless of who they are, you shouldn't cooperate with them. In the unlikely event that they're telling the truth, nothing bad is going to happen to your account as a result of a single erroneous report.

Alright, alright, I get it :D

Mainly, I just wanted to show that offficial Valve employees have their own group and have that official badge.
But I thought, hey, you need a topic for linking them. Due to on every official employees profile they warn about that well-known employee impersonator scam, I thought: Hey, this is my topic!

Might not have been one of my brightest ideas, I have to admit :)

People do fall for these things, making the topic definitely isn't a bad idea. I had to disconnect my grandmother and restrict her internet access because she's very gullible. (There was an incident where someone called her and told her my brother was in a car accident and needed money for the hospital bill, and they were just a concerned friend)
So it's easy to imagine that older, or younger, gaming members would fall for something so simple. A reminder doesn't hurt anyhow.

Anyone who claims to be a Valve employee is actually a Nigerian Prince in disguise.

I wonder how that would look like in the library? For me it's cluttered already with 400 games...
