Welcome to the Cozy Zone, the corner of SG dedicated to sharing and discussing cozy games. Get yourself a blanket, some hot chocolate or herbal tea, get comfy in your chair and enjoy the good vibes and the good gibs too.

I'm certain most of you are familiar with the concept of "cozy gaming/games" by now, but to avoid any confusion here are some excerpts I stole from articles written by people who are better with words than me, which should give you the idea:

These kinds of games encourage players to take things slow and enjoy the cozier things in life, which is why they've gained a reputation for being 'cozy games'. While there isn't an official definition for what a cozy game is exactly, those that do fall under this categorization have a particular vibe that is easy to spot. Typically, a cozy game will be laid back, have minimal, if any, combat, an endearing art style, and will wrap its action around a wholesome story.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Whether the ideal cozy game consists of task-based satisfaction or getting to project personal feelings onto a melancholy storyline, there are options suitable to gamers of all backgrounds. The genre is very flexible, populated with RPGs, platformers, point-and-click adventures, life sims, and much more. These are the games to play after a long day of work, on rainy days, and when you just don't feel like crawling out of bed.`
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The core idea behind [cozy gaming] is the combination of appealing colors, atmospheric music, and playability. In addition, a game should also be fun and relaxing, contributing to the experience that can be referred to as cozy.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Cozy games are predominantly identified by the comfortable atmosphere, aesthetically pleasing design, and task-focused gameplay. Cozy games are not always easy or relaxing, though they can be.

With that out of the way and skipping the whole "in these hard times we all need more cozy time in our lives" preamble (heh), let's get straight to what the Cozy Zone is supposed to be about:

My giveaways of cozy games. To be honest (at first) I just needed a place for my next gibs, as it so happened that I was in possession of some amount of keys for this particular type of games, but instead of going with just another one-time train I decided to make it an ongoing thread. So for now the plan is to do GAs for this thread with games of the cozy kind on a somewhat regular basis.

Your giveaways of cozy games. Everyone is welcome to join me in making GAs for games that fit the theme. No strict guidelines, use your own discretion when deciding if the game is good for this thread. In general, fitting games usually have one or more of these tags on Steam: Relaxing / Family Friendly / Cozy / Wholesome / Cute / Comedy; and here are some tags that these games usually don't include: Violent / Gore / Survival / Psychological Horror / Hentai / Dark / War / Military / Dystopian (these are just some examples of some of the most popular tags). In any case, if a game seems cozy enough to you, feel free to give it away. Just make your GAs private (aka invite-only).
Special Cats tag exception: as a result of the FCDSCGC-2023 event, cats were proclaimed the mascot animal of our thread and thus any game that has a 'Cats' tag on Steam is allowed to be given away here, whether it's cozy or not.
Every active giveaway will be featured in the OP (if I'm around at the time it's running).

General discussion of cozy games. Random cozy games discoveries, thoughts on latest games you've played, discounts alerts and everything else related to games of the cozy kind.

Recommendations for cozy games. Do share your favorite games, well known or not. Hidden gems are especially welcome though, cause many niche games often go largely unnoticed.

Cozy events. So, events have become a semi-regular occurrence in our thread, and I'm looking to make them an integral part of the Cozy Zone experience moving forward. If you want to host an event in the thread which requires some coordination or have an idea for a future event, please contact me on Steam; otherwise, feel free to post your cozy trains, celebratory GAs, puzzles and whatnot at any time. You can also contribute by either partially or fully sponsoring the prize pool and/or by donating cozy games for events (as I might struggle to fully cover these prize/GAs-wise on my own, so some help is always appreciated; again, contact me for this).

If you wish to just bump the thread, feel free to so, but keep in mind that the recommended way to bump is the cozy way, which is achieved by posting:
♦ pics of your adorable pets ♦ pics of your cozy gaming space ♦ pics of anything cozy or cute ♦ light-hearted memes ♦ links to relaxing music (make sure to check out our own cozy playlist ♫ too) ♦

One rule in this thread: good vibes only, so please let's make it comfy for everyone and keep the negativity to the minimum.

Active giveaways

from Ellendyl Euro Truck Simulator 2 (lvl 2+)
from s4k1s 4 games cozy Cakeday train (lvl 1-2+)

Current streak of consecutive days with at least one GA running has been going since: January 15, 2023 (approximately)

A few upcoming cozies from the "Women-led games" showcase for your wishlists, some with demos for your short play needs

Copycat, a narrative game that allows you to literally be a cat and do kitty things! (Demo)
Pieced Together, a super cozy-looking scrapbooking game about friendship and growing up.
SunnySide, a sleek farming/dating sim in the Japanese countryside. The tags say "turned based combat" but I can't find anything on this. Probably won't be worse than Stardew's "combat" though
Tiny Glade, a relax and kick back builder game where you doodle cool castles (Demo)

My brother!

It still works. ;)

With the little joysticks too??
I played so much Video Olympics where literally every game was a variation of Pong with more or less paddles... took me years to find out that's not what Hockey looked like in real life!

Oh, I probably went through about 5-6 of the original joysticks. Started buying third-party ones, even back in the 80s. But I got these great ones from Epyx (remember those guys? They made a lot of C64 games) with microswitches circa 1986-7, and they still work like the day I bought them. Astoundingly good technology.

Biggest issue is just converting the signal to a big screen these days because most of them don't have a coaxial port in the back. So you have to jump the Atari through an old VHS to convert the signal to RWY component cables because most TVs still have those ports.

My wife surprised me at Christmas with a new Atari...looks exactly like my original wood grain model, except scaled down about 20%-30%. And no, it's not one of those ones with just a bunch of stuff built in. It takes the original cartridges and everything! It's literally a regular Atari. However...it has HDMI out on it! Man, that saves so much hassle. Now I can just grab the HDMI cable that I leave plugged into port 3 of my receiver, slam it in the back of the Atari, and we're off to the races. Very cool.

But I got these great ones from Epyx

Ooooh the really cool looking ones! Never saved enough money for those back then. I kept breaking the piggy bank to buy games lol
I remember Epyx! They also made Winter Games, one of my first games for my Amstrad CPC a few years later.

So you have to jump the Atari through an old VHS to convert the signal to RWY component cables because most TVs still have those ports.

Creative!

My wife surprised me at Christmas with a new Atari

( ✧Д✧) Dude! I didn't even know these existed!! (I know what I'm getting for Xmas! but I'll have to literally ask my gf because she knows nothing about consoles, unlike your wife obv)
And with HDMI! and taking the old cartridges?? It's like you just told me you got a unicorn for Xmas, Grez!!

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Yeah, it's really super cool. It also comes with a multi-cartridge that has like 10-12 games on it. You just flip the dip switches on the back, then put the cartridge back in, and voila! Different game! I owned most of them already (yes, I still have my original Combat cartridge, and yes, it still works), but there were at least a couple that I didn't have, so that was pretty fun.

I still have around 50-60 cartridges, and other than one or two, they all still work.

Rotoscoping is cool!

I think our Atari must have died in the Great Storage Room Water Leak. We had worn out the controllers with vigorous Combat and Space Invaders. And I gave up my Lynx to my Atari friend, for the betterment of his Atari parties. And our NES needs a new blade thing. We're mostly Wii, Switch, and PS5 gamers now.

Speaking of, Spiritfarer is nice for the between play, but watch for a few poignant cut scenes. Fun and lighthearted co-op, if you have someone who likes to jump about.

And speaking of cats and co-op, Kitaria Fables is pretty mellow, with some slashing. A little shorter than I'd like on story, but not too stressful if you're in for some light grinding with some farming bits. Story is there, just not Stardew or Spiritfarer level.

Wii. We also have X360, PS2, PS3, and a multi cartridge system hooked up, but they see erratic use. MegaMan collection, Katamari, Armored Core 4 (ousted recently by AC6). PS3 was busy with Sonic Generations (solid game but annoying end boss) but we just beat it. These games are not cozy. :D (I feel you on Spiritfarer. I miss the frog. "Berries!")

Are there cozy rhythm games? Spiritfarer had that mini game... I love Rock Band, and Elite Beat Agents, and would love something rhythm game adjacent.

Permalink

These games are not cozy

Haha I was just thinking that. Thread hijacking nostalgia led us away a bit but there really wasn't that many cozies back there.

Are there cozy rhythm games? Spiritfarer had that mini game

Oooh yeah that's a fun one. I don't think I have come across many. I did just play the demo for Dustborn during Nextfest and it's part narrative, part rhythm game with a comic book style but the demo does have some combat and fascism seems to be part of the story so i don't think it'll end up very cozy.

A quick seach with the Cozy and Rhythm tags does not yield many results except maybe Love Crescendo but it's more of a VN than a cozy.

I have Blue Wednesday wishlisted and it feels like a proper cozy with really cool art and music too. It has a free "prologue" if you want to give it a whirl and see if it scratches the itch

I remember another one that's on the tip of my brain but I can't pinpoint it.

Edited: I know! It was Mirth Melody

Played a few game demos from Nextfest but so far not much cozy to report besides Mythwrecked: Ambrosia Island which is a very chill exploration game with a mystery narrative and a fetch/discover quest system.
The demo is over an hour of gameplay but no save so don't start playing if you want to complete the demo and don't have a good 90 mn to sink in it

Someone in the purchase thread said they'd bought Stardew Valley (the new 1.6 update gave it some fresh life). I haven't seen anything cozy that I don't already have that has enough discount or excitement for me that I've been wanting to splurge on it. But I'm still peeking around looking for bargains.

Nuclear Blaze is a game where you put out fires. The regular mode isn't very cozy (and the New Game+ mode decidedly not). But it has a kid mode where your spray automatically goes the right way, and you walk around to save the hiding cat. And that sounds adorable. (The cats are charming and apparently fire resistant.) I recently got that. Short but fun. It has a ton of settings to make it as easy as you need.

I knooow! I read about that! As if I needed an excuse to sink even more hundreds of hours into the game! (and I haven't even played the big story mods yet!)

I'm trying out Stardew Expanded mod, and it's a lot of neat bits added in. I think it, plus the 1.6 adds, makes for an interesting replay. That said, this is like my fourth or fifth playthrough, and I petered out partway thru the island. I gather some of the other large story expansions add new towns and such, that make you walk around like crazy, and aren't as consistent in content as Stardew Expanded.

I may have also added a mod for cuter farm animals...

Stardew Expanded is definitely my first stop. Now I guess I'll try a vanilla run first with 1.6 before I do anything else

You really can't go wrong with cuter farm animals.
I only have a mod to save anywhere because I was going deep in the mines and I had to stop playing to work and I kept starting all over again lol... and the Planned Parenthood mod because I wanted to see my wife pregnant and not just get babies on the front porch one day

So, the Steam sale... I already have Potion Permit, which is on sale. It's kind of Stardew-ish, with a central town and your house and people missions, but people have a bit less dynamics. Not awful though. Some gathering out in the wild monstery areas. I like the mini games to treat people and particularly the potion mini game Tetris. It's not crazy long like Stardew, but I feel like it might merit the $10 price if it looks like your thing. I wouldn't have minded even MOAR, but we are spoiled rotten with the Stardew dev.

Also, I would pick up Dave the Diver, but I just bought the shiny physical release on console. If you get the game soon, you can get the free Godzilla DLC, which has a limited time of availability (end of the year I think?) Probably licensing reasons.

Looks interesting! Low-key exploration games are perfect for unwinding. I can see why you would like to know about the themes though.

It looks soulful, which is a great thing but at the same time could also mean maybe going in a bit deeper than I would like for a kid.
I'm just going to buy it for myself anyway so I'll do that and I'll buy her a copy if it passes the sniff test when I play.

The Star Named EOS
Similar vibes to Behind the Frame: The Finest Scenery, but a little too puzzle heavy.

Lumbearjack is free on Epic games this week (starting nowish). It looks like if you had Haven Park get industrial, and one of the bears decided to slowly ax away the industrial bits... It looks slow paced from what I watched, anyway. Cozy with a side of ecological based morals story? Ah, 'casual' someone suggests.

Platformers may not exactly be "cozy", but I find them relaxing if they are not too difficult. I find comfort in the repetition of jumping. Being cute, like this one, also helps. 😆

Tbf that's mostly precision platformers. Casual platformers and the like should get a cozy pass, however.

Same for me! Sometimes I jump boot up Celeste and put my brain on autopilot while dying in game every 3 seconds. It's weirdly relaxing.

Reviews seem very positive so far. Ofc a lot of them mention Stardew Valley but not so much in a "yeah just another clone" and more as a point of reference when it comes to the game's quality and writing.
Seems pretty chill. Wishlisted.
