I'm wondering, how does the Recommended tab really work?
What determines what games end up there? Is is based on an algorithm; I suppose it not curated? :P

The reason I ask is that I in the past thought it was somewhat useful, for example games or DLCs that I entered giveaways for a lot (and that for some reason wasn't on my wishlist) ended up there and now they don't.
Seems to me that its usually the same type of games that ends up there; same categories.

If its selection is based on games that a lot of people enter giveaways for anyway, what's the point?

Not really a critique as such, mostly curious. Ideally, it would be best if the selection was based on the users preferences, but I don't see that as very realistic.

Do you use the Recommended tab often?

Pretty sure it's based on your past entries. I think after you've entered a giveaway for the same game 3+ times then it will appear there.

I thought so too but some games I've entered for a lot don't show up on the tab.

This used to be true. It's been broken for months.

I answered 'No' in the poll, so I guess I haven't noticed.

just like you said, it used to have GA in it that i joined often... since some time now it doesnt.
since then i started to use it less and less.
youre also not the first one wondering about what happened to it and posting a discussion... to my knowledge no real answer came from them.

Yes, it would be great with an official statement, since I for one has never seen one, either in the forums or in the rules/regulations.
(about the function itself and if its been changed)
And I would assume others are wondering about the same thing.
IMO no use having a feature people use less and less in its current form (if that is indeed the case).

I'm quite sure it's not based on my past entries, or at least not on just them, I find many games I never entered for, there, even a couple I'm not interested in at all from time to time. I thought it was for "more expensive" or AAA games, but how the system sorts that is a mystery for me. FilthySouls' hypothesis could be correct, though.

Let me try to demystify it a bit. The recommended page looks at how popular a game is on our community wishlist, and a combination of metascore and release date. This means it'll include older games with a great metascore, and recently released games with a good metascore.

As a few people noted, in the past it also included games you recently entered but that had a couple of issues...

  1. It didn't take into consideration how often a game was given away. If two giveaways were posted for game X and a user entered both of them, and 1,000 giveaways were created for game Y and the user only entered three of them, it would include game Y, even though they most likely prefer X.

  2. It didn't factor in points. Users are likely to have more entries in games that require fewer points, so it would incorrectly give preference to those games.

  3. It was a bit of an endless circle where it was recommending games because a user entered them at one point, and the user was entering them because they were recommended. It was easy for a lot of mediocre games to get trapped in the loop and clutter the page while overlooking better options.

In short it needs some work, but it might be worth checking once in a while to see if you missed any giveaways for games high on our wishlist, or games with a high metascore.

I personally preferred the old version which showed games I entered mulitple times before. Nowadays I barely use it.

I was looking for this kind of explanation for a long time, thanks. Still - in my opinion, looking at the games being recommended to me, this tab is sadly more or less useless now. Used to work way better before, even considering the issues you've listed. Food for thought I guess.

Most of these recommended games end up on my hide list. I agree that it worked way better before

As others have said, I too prefer the recommended tab as it was before, which was more useful IMHO. It was great for keeping track of games you entered a lot for, but weren't in your wishlist. I personally don't wishlist every game that I'm interested in, and I also enter only those games that I think I'd enjoy playing (regardless of points). I don't think that the users that think that tactfully about their points are concerned about the recommended tab. Even if it wasn't a perfect system, I still prefer it. This is all just my opinion though, but I felt you should hear it.
