I have almost completed Dark souls, it's a masterpiece. I think it fits your criteria very well, but I won't surprise anyone with this game!

I never really played ninja gaiden, I played a little bit of the very first one, there was no way I was going to be able to manage to get passed the second boss so I never ended up playing it again. Only difficult games I've played since are Dark Souls 1 and 2. Loving this series, I'd definitely recommend it if you haven't already played them.

I love that one. I didn't get to the end, it's becoming harder and harder. I remember the bonus level about moustachium, my working solution was looking like that, with very few empty zones.
By the way, the difficult game that pops to my mind is Hotline Miami. I guess I was able to go through first fight only. My speed skills are really bad but, hey, anyway I know how to make moustachium :)

Guess what ? I launched it again before getting to bed yesterday. I played for one hour and an half and while the game is not easy, I find it enjoyable this time. I must have missed something the first time I tried it (probably the precise timing when getting close to the ennemy and attacking). So: thank you :)

Obligatory Dark Souls comment, but after I got the hang of it, I really enjoyed my time there.
Dark Souls 2 was a bit easier in my opinion, but dying and losing a bit of your maximum health got me in a rough spot during the first hours of playing the game

Anyways, my real pick for this thread is Wasteland 2. I went in with no idea of the game whatsoever and I got rekt very easily. The game is awesome, but I'll need time to understand its mechanics.

I started with Demon's Souls on the PS3.... Every release after that seemed a little easier, but I not sure if they really are. I think it is more likely that we learned the mechanics of the games and are more prepared for what they are going to throw our way. Still Dark Souls 3 is at the top of my most wanted games right now!! Can't wait!!

I don't know the original game but Dark Souls 2 SotFS is harder than Dark souls. But not in a challenging way more like "here have a 5 man ambush" kind of hard. Even though normal story was manageable at some point i thought that dlcs was made to play coop :(

Battletoads or Contra (no code) for NES. Dark Castle for Genesis also comes to mind.

I'm currently playing The Long Dark. You can play perfectly and still meet an untimely end thanks to, well, many factors (freezing, wolf attack, starvation...etc).

FTL was pretty hard. But after a while I got really good at it and I could beat normal with something like an 85% success rate. There were still some occasions that took me by surprise though, which is why I find it to be such a brilliant game.

Hard Reset maybe? Not sure if that counts because this game shows its true form on higher difficulties.
Hotline Miami 2 (It was easier at the beginng but had harder final boss).

Some of those I have to disagree with, Streets of Rage and Golden Axe were pretty easy, especially by the standards of super hard gaming back in the day. Commando's I'd have also said was pretty easy except the last level is harder than life itself.

Other than that, great list! Aladdin was so hard.

Easy?? No they werent, they were mega hard, ive never even completed Golden Axe 2, their super hard.. well for me anyways.. i didnt know english, didnt read alot and just pressed buttons... i watched my cousin play Commandos and we were stuck on the waterfall/dam level, unbeatable...also there are hard modes you can turn on but i never bothered and they were too hard on normal as they were.. thank you.

In Golden Axe: Always try to approach enemies diagonally. Me & a friend finished it while drunk on our first try, so it's not all that hard, as long as you know how to approach enemies. Approaching enemies diagonally is actually one of the main tricks to beating beat 'em ups from that era.

I've actually beaten a good number of games on your list. Aladdin, Streets of Rage, Desert Strike (SNES version, but it's more or less identical), Golden Axe 2, Sonic & knuckles 3 and Arcanum (Arcanum is just poorly balanced. Get the first level of black necromancy and the game is a cakewalk)

Hhrrrhn... diagonaly... i didnt utilize that enough, mostly just went straight directly head on against enemies, waiting for them to get up, only to be charged on and wake up lashed away, i can never forget those attacks that constantly hit me, urgh... charging skeletons, club bad guys and charging purple lizardmen, i simply cannot forget them... this diagonale aproach, i learned it when i played Streets of Rage Remake last year, that definetly made it far too easy for my liking...WHAT?! Drunk?! First try?! Impossible!! Thats freaking so hard to believe, my gosh... so my speedrunning non dying Dead Space pro playing friend is not alone to, geez... thats shocking to hear honestly.. i know i was just a kid back then but, ugh, im horrible, horrible, horrible.....

You have..? Huh.. well.. uhm.. good work then i guess, they were too hard for me, im just trash at everything... dont remember if i actualy beat the first Streets of Rage, the bosses are litearly a nightmare, from first to last, you have to beat freaking around 20 bosses in total, as 1 player and Mr. X. Just finishes me off and other times me and my relatives too with ease, occasionaly by the bloody areobatic girls instead, second game was a tons bunch easier... SNSES?? Ewww :( Desert Strike enemies were devastating and the chopper fragile.. i watched my cousin ace Urban Strike and Jungle Strike though... Sonic 3 last LAST boss was untouchable so i lost...(i was...am dumb and awfull, okay..?) ... i never tried anything else in Arcanum other than armoring up in that mechanical big plated suit of armor guarded by that mechanical spider and robot, that one particular sword and swing away at people( well thats what i specificaly did the last time but before that i just watched my cousin struggle trough the game, dont know we just stopped playing at some points...other games im going to guess..?), not advance all that much, travel alot (me and my cousin were convinced if we were singing while fast traveling, the grizzly bears wouldnt kill us, it worked for a good while), and eventualy die.. didnt get almost nowhere in story, did some quests, traveled around and messed around, we didnt know english or much of reading or didnt bother or. Something like that, it was a special time for us with Arcanum and we still love the game from our early teenagehood... also sounds like a necromancer build is a huge cheap cheesing way of the game, but alright, its there after all...

Crisis Core PSP on easy difficulty is just press x to win ......

Comment has been collapsed.

Uh, wrong? You have to strategize, win strong loot, equip the best suitable gear and so on. First off, there is no easy difficulty, normal or hard. Secondly, ever tried to do ALL the missions? The higher end game tier ones are impossible, enemies get one hit kill attacks, if youre not a proffesional at dodging and getting the most out of your gear, you'l just end up losing all of your Phoenix Down's and lose repeatedly... thirdly, theres the hard difficulty, which is too hard... now FF7 Remake is definetly looking like press x to win, Cloud looks so out of control while Zack is so tame, one of the reasons why i dislike anime games..

Hey, using retro games is CHEATING.

If you really want to do hard old games, try Toki : Going Apespit. The design choices were awful, but I beat it anyway, because hell hath no fury like a gaming-fixated child with nothing better to play >:3

Or you can go the whole distance and say Eternal Champions. Old 2D beat-em-up where the AI outright 'cheats' as it ramps up in difficulty. By the time you reach the last boss, any single blow you try to land on the enemy will be likely be intercepted by pixel-perfect counters, and that's before the last boss himself. Gruh. Though that falls in the 'artificial difficulty' category...

Hard to say what the hardest games I've played are, there are several that I can't beat, but here are the hardest that I've beaten:

Gothic 2 with Night of the Raven: Combat is very unforgiving, and getting good at it takes time.
Schizm/Mysterious Journey: It's like MYST, but for people who thought that MYST was far too easy.

Le me at Gothic 2 NotR.
I see a fly, get my sword ready and stat running to the fly. FREE EXP!
Fly is not a fly, is a motherfucker bug from hell. Hellbug calls his friends.
I start running away because the first hellbug almost killed me.
THEY CAN SHOOT, THEY CAN SHOOOOOOT aaaand I'm dead.
