You really want Xenoblade Chronicles for Wii then.

Absolutely. I'd go for Xenoblade Chronicles too.
A real blast and maybe the sum of what's the best in the genre. Kind of demanding but not too punishing when you lose combats.
I've only played around 25-30 hours but the story was very engaging and it was just the beginning.

:D So I'm a really slow player.
Now I have to check how much I played. I was still in the swamps right after the dinosaurs area.

I was fast reading. I thought you said it will end around 30 hours, sorry.
You are not slow player. It is usuall progress.
Do you use gamepad while playing? Game feels like it was made for gampad.
ANd if you have smash bros, it is also played better with gamepad.

Yes, I played with the "classic controller" and the game was clearly meant for it.
The game feels more like a 100-150 hours long. How long did it take you to complete it ?

You have listed a lot of things that are in almost every JRPG.
Comment has been collapsed.
Wow.... thats... a pretty extensive list that covers quite a ton of all JRPGs :P

uhm.. in that case... there are a few good suggestions in the thread already, hopefully you'll find one that you like! :D

tales of Zestiria might work other then the save issue I think while health doesn't rest also it is a bit easyer to get it back in some ways I am not sure

there are really a lot of savepoints , but the fighting system is a little aggravating (unnessessary complicated)

it is the sameish in some ways but also not I mostly play on auto mode due to not wanting to kill my thumb anymore =p.... I miss turbo controllers......

I am pretty sad that i didn't own a console all these years. Today I looked at this game and cried that i haven't played it. Turn based rpgs have always been my favorite beside hack and slash but it's so limited on pc. Now that i am starting to find jrpgs i am sad that i haven't played any of them.

Chrono Trigger for SNES or Playstation One. But, as forementioned sequel Chrono Cross, it wouldn't allow you to save at any time. Of course you could do this any time on map, no problem there.
Comment has been collapsed.
If you liked Chrono Trigger you'll probably like Black Sigil on DS, it's pretty much got everything that made CT fun aside from the whole time travel element. Only thing you probably won't like is there are a lot of random encounters, but it's really easy to run away.
It does have a couple glitches though, like one of the dual techs being unobtainable because the event that's supposed to unlock it doesn't work right. There's plenty of gameplay videos on youtube so I'd suggest watching a few first.

Try Grandia & Grandia II, or Legend of Dragoon, they're dated but hold up.

Grandia 2
Legend of Heroes Trails in The Sky
Legend of Heroes Trails in The Sky SC
All the above games don't have random battles(at least as fas as i remember). Instead the monsters move around on the map and they have to touch you, or you touch them, in order to fight them. You can evade most of the fights if you bait them then run away

Have you checked out Trails in the Sky? It has a direct sequel that came out not too long ago, so it's a good time to get both unless you'd rather wait for a sale.
Encounters can be avoided entirely except for scripted ones if you choose.
You can save at any time.
Status ailments clear except for KO. HP and MP reset when you level up which is fairly often and there are magic setups that regen health/mana as you walk (in the sequel to the first). Overall the game is fairly forgiving about party survival and once you learn how to pace yourself you should almost never have to use items.
There's nothing fan-servicey in the game other than 2 scenes total (both games included) involving a hot springs resort but there's no nudity.
There's a Recipe Book for crafting useful food for healing and buffing purposes that actually make it cheaper to craft food than buy healing potions directly.
The story's pace is rather slow compared to other JRPGs but there's also very little grinding unlike other JRPGs, almost every character is likable in some way.

Maybe Seasons of the Wolf? Doesn't fit all your criteria (it does have random encounters, and health doesn't reset after each battle), but you can save anytime. Also Planet Stronghold by the same developer. It has mostly avoidable random encounters; health doesn't reset, but there's an abundance of health potions and time to rest; and you can save anytime.

Valkyria Chronicles is the best guess that I have. You can save whenever you want, the fights are at pre-designated points in the game, the story is rather dark when it comes to jrpgs (the closest we have to a game that talks about the Holocaust) and the only thing that carries over from battle to battle is character deaths which are negligible.
Great game and I highly recommend it but you are asking for a jrpg without a lot of jrpg elements so don't expect to get many different games to choose from.

Disgaea is coming out for PC next year, and while it's a tactical RPG, it has most of the stuff you mentioned. It isn't overtly sexual, there are no random encounters (because battles are in special arenas), it lets you save whenever you want (only outside of battles though).
If you have a ps2 laying around, try to get the .hack//G.U. games. Fantastic rpgs, though a couple of characters might bother you.
Persona 3 and 4 are also good picks, they have really good story, the enconteurs aren't necessarily random, you can avoid most if you're careful, the character design is great and while you need to save at save points, they are frequent enough not to be a huge bother as long as you don't fuck everything up.
Those 3 are my personal holy grail of JRPGs.

The Last Remnant - http://store.steampowered.com/app/23310/
Only one i know that fits your criteria.

This is a little sideways, but how about a Harvest Moon game, or something similar to that? It might be easier if you say what you want, instead of what you don't. There's a lot of JRPGs where you don't have to heal very often for example (I never really have to heal in most final fantasy games between battles).
Rune Factory is a fantasy version of Harvest Moon, but you need to heal more often, though not too much, and there's no random or turn based battles.
ADOM and TOME are fantastic, and you can play them for free (you may have to download them from their respective websites). South Park: The Stick of Truth is a really great JRPG, but it has South Park humor, so whether you'll enjoy that is up to you.

Well since you mentioned playing Bravely Default and enjoying Chrono Trigger, I'll recommed one of my favourite DS games, Radiant Historia. It offers an alternative take on time travel, focusing more on a specific set of events. It does everything you requested. No random encounters, no sexual anything, status effects disappear. There are plenty of save points (there's always one before bosses) and you get a skill that allows you to stun monsters and avoid combat pretty early on. Eventually you'll also be able to run around undected.

Here's some more games, besides Trails in the Sky, you may or may not enjoy, all of which are on Steam...also sorry for the size but as a fellow RPG enthusiast who's looked high and low for fun ones that are worth playing... hopefully something I list will be helpful.
I don't think I saw anyone mention Fairy Fencer F(from the makers of HyperDimension Neptunia) but although I haven't played it, I have heard a lot of good things about it and that it does a few things differently/better than the HyperDimension Neptunia series.
Last Dream - It was made using RPG maker but it's easily one of the more thoroughly designed ones available (It does have random encounters but you can lower the encounter rate). It basically uses the default sprites/models for everything but there's a lot of neat extra content to go along with its main story. It's not too hard on the wallet, has a lot of party setup options(class choices affect the game), replayability and lastly they're going to be releasing an expansion and full sequel to it.
Child of Light: The world map plays like a plat-former somewhat but the combat is entirely like a JRPG, turn-based, multiple characters form the party, choice-based talent trees/skills/magic and equipment to collect of course. The story and dialogue alone makes the game worth it and it looks gorgeous... the one and only downside to it is that it requires UPlay to play, if you can get past that though it is so worth it.
Cthulu Saves the World: It's somewhat short but very amusing. You can also buy it as a 2 for 1 with Breath of Fire VII. It's also an rpg with similar comedy and length but you can grab both for a dollar or less on a sale which makes both very good value.
I'd also like to mention Avernum: Escape from the Pit and Avernum 2: Crystal Souls... these games aren't JRPGs and they aren't for everyone for sure. They've been remade based on remakes of a series called Exile by Spiderweb Software from way back in the dial-up age of the internet. They've been streamlined to suite a more modern audience though so you can save wherever (which is essential since you can very easily kill yourself like I often did ^^;) enemies can be avoided but they will also often chase you. There's multiple endings, turn-based combat and a completely customizable character/party creator... the only downside is that these games are still old games and today's impatient gamers can be critical of them just for that. If I can get even one person to discover them and enjoy them then this box of text was worth it. :P
These games I haven't actually played but they're high on my wishlist since they look really interesting:
Mugen Souls: I hear it's been heavily altered like several Agarest games so it may fall into too much fan-service though.
Machina of the Planet Tree -Planet Ruler- : Another RPG Maker game, it's been heavily customized into an anime looking game and overall looks pretty good but the reviews say it's a little short.
Eternal Senia: This one is entirely free but has a pretty good story from what I've seen and hopefully the creator will make a sequel or something to that affect.
Epic Battle Fantasy 4: It has a ton of recommendations so it must be doing something right.
Evoland 1 & 2: They aren't 100% JRPG but they pay homage to some of the old-school favorites.

Thanks for even more suggestions! Really appreciate you taking so much time to write this all out!
I actually started up Last Dream yesterday. Haven't gotten far enough into it to really decide how I feel about it yet but the fact that it's got so many good reviews on steam seems like a good omen (and that you would bring it up as a recommendation of course!).
I've played Avernum 4 and really enjoyed it! I'm definitely going to be playing Escape from the Pit at some point.
Will definitely look into the titles you mentioned!

That's like saying : "Help me find a piece of shit in the road!" Seriously...play a western RPG. In those, combatants don't take turns twating each other over the head with ridiculously huge swords that most people wouldn't be able to lift, let alone swing, the protagonists aren't annoying emo, angsty teenage cunts with spiky hair and the plots aren't nonsensical bullshit that no one gives a rat's ass about.

WOW, I expressed a personal opinion that just so happens to be quite negative towards a genre of games and you respond by insulting me. WOW!!!! That's...pathetic.. Were you raised in a barn in some USA southern state by sibling parents? Cause it sure looks like it. Am I supposed to automatically like whatever you like? You had to know such a comment would come when you created this thread. Seriously...or are you just that dense to think the world is all pink rainbows and butterflies? And just FYI I gave some pretty solid reasons for my opinion. Just take the most representative series of JRPGs out there and analyze it and you'll see clearly how right I am. But perhaps you're the type of guy that likes horrible characters like Lightning or Cloud... In which case, all I can say is: =)) =)) =))

I guess you really are a hill-billy. I mean, what else could I think of the fact that you put equivalence between insulting a genre of games and insulting a PERSON?
Comment has been collapsed.
Yeah but if you take a JRPG and take away like everything that defines that genre, is the result then still a JRPG, just cause it is from Japan? Are the Souls games then also a JRPG just cause they are from Japan even if it has quite nothing to do with the typical JRPG genre? ._.

The same argument could be used for WRPGs, compare the early ones with the modern ones. Genres evolve, but much like you can trace a lineage between Kingdoms of Amaluar or Diablo 3 and Ultima, you can trace a lineage between a modern JRPG like Xenoblades or The Last Story to Final Fantasy & Dragon Warrior/Quest. Sometimes it's appropriate to divide things into further sub-genres when games differ too much from each other, and that's probably what should be done with JRPGs at this point, considering how different they are from each other at this point.

Fnord explained it well. There's more to what might contribute to a JRPG to make it a "JRPG" other than what I mentioned in the OP. Such as:
I'm sure there's more elements to what makes a JRPG a JRPG but I'm not really an expert on the matter. Point is, JRPGs do have a unique feeling to them. They may not share all the same systems and certainly do not include everything listed above all the time but they tend towards that kind of style. I just picked out certain aspects I didn't enjoy as much as others to try to find a JRPG that fits me best :)

I've recently gotten more interested JRPGs but there are certain things in a lot of JRPGs that I just do not like. So maybe a more fitting title would be "help me find a turn based RPG game"?
I might be a bit picky so your suggestions don't have to match these criteria entirely but it'd be nice if you pointed out which ones they do fit.
Overall, I guess I'm just a casual. But anyone have any games that come to mind? A good story would be preferred obviously. Hopefully not too cliche.
Totally unrelated GAEnded cause a thread like this should just have one. It should be a JRPG but I don't have any to giveaway right now. Besides, my last 2 GAs were JRPG bundles anyways.Comment has been collapsed.
