I'll try to remember to post a quote daily. Here's a start:

We're each of us alone, to be sure. What can you do but hold your hand out in the dark?

Ursula K. Le Guin

Happy 85th birthday, Ursula K. Le Guin!

Obviously I invite others to post here, but let's keep it posi!

"All men dream, but not equally. Those who dream by night in the dusty recesses of their minds, wake in the day to find that it was vanity: but the dreamers of the day are dangerous men, for they may act on their dreams with open eyes, to make them possible. "

The perversity of nature is nowhere better demonstrated by the fact that, when exposed to the same atmosphere, bread becomes hard while crackers become soft.

Once more, the more to aggravate the note,
With a foul traitor's name stuff I thy throat,
And wish – so please my sovereign – ere I move,
What my tongue speaks my right-drawn sword may prove.-From Richard II, spoken by Henry Bolingbroke, future Henry IV.
One of my favorite openings to any of Shakespeare's works is the scene in Richard II, between Henry Bolingbroke, then Duke of Hereford, and Thomas de Mowbray, 1st Duke of Norfolk.

Do not hunt for fleas on your arms or bosom in front of the patron or in front of the servants in the hall. (1111-12)

“...one day when I was a young boy on holiday in Uberwald I was walking along the bank of a stream when I saw a mother otter with her cubs. A very endearing sight, I'm sure you'll agree, and even as I watched, the mother otter dived into the water and came up with a plump salmon, which she subdued and dragged onto a half submerged log. As she ate it, while of course it was still alive, the body split and I remember to this day the sweet pinkness of its roes as they spilled out, much to the delight of the baby otters, who scrambled over themselves to feed on the delicacy. One of nature's wonders, gentlemen. Mother and children dining upon mother and children. And that is when I first learned about evil. It is built into the very nature of the universe. Every world spins in pain. If there is any kind of supreme being, I told myself, it is up to all of us to become his moral superior.”

"We are, perhaps, uniquely among the earth's creatures, the worrying animal. We worry away our lives, fearing the future, discontent with the present, unable to take in the idea of dying, unable to sit still."

“At some point, we as a country will have to reckon with the fact that this type of mass violence does not happen in other advanced countries. It doesn’t happen in other places with this kind of frequency. And it is within our power to do something about it," President Barack Obama said.

(Please do not reply here with hateful comments. What happened in that church in Charleston is a tragedy and a horror, and nothing else.)

That's an important reflection. Here in Mexico we are suffering much violence and the reaction of our leaders goes from hiding their heads in the sand to just saying things are being done about it.

These incidents keep happening and treating them as isolated things won't go anywhere towards preventing them.

President Obama to the church in Charleston, quoting the words that MLK delivered after the deaths of four young girls in a Birmingham church:

"They say to us that we must be concerned not merely about who murdered them, but about the system, the way of life, the philosophy which produced the murderers. Their death says to us that we must work passionately and unrelentingly for the realization of the American dream ... and if one will hold on, he will discover that God walks with him,and that God is able to lift you from the fatigue of despair to the buoyancy of hope, and transform dark and desolate valleys into sunlit paths of inner peace."

José Rizal

Before becoming a celebrated writer, journalist, and revolutionary, Filipino national hero José Rizal (born June 19, 1861) went to medical school so he could help his mother, who was going blind. At the age of 25, he completed his eye specialization and used an ophthalmoscope to operate on his mother.
