points generating too fast? its only true for the high levels. but it seems now every user will "suffer" becouse of them,by reducing points. so now the scripts are the main problem. if someone has the spare time to check in, why you should punish them, while we are not the part of the problem.
hoping for the best

I hope my special skills (ctrl+m1, ctrl+tab) for faster speed joining wishlisted GA will not be banned :S

The points thing worries me. I mean I'm sure I'm the same as most people, 95% of the time I have loads of points. Then a Humble Bundle or something comes out, the site gets flooded with games on my wishlist, and I'm empty.
Not sure if theres a solution which doesn't make that effect worse, while helping what you're trying to do :/

I am going to start assigning suspensions to users that are using these scripts
How to proof that? Thats like finding a fake giveaway, everyone knows its a fake but the mods must wait 7 days to see if its exactly was a fake.
First do something about the regifters and the one who dont activate the gifts. Sometimes it takes months till these users get the suspension.

fucking LOL at all the scripters coming out of the woodwork

So will be insta and permaban?
I use a lot of scripts but none for autojoin (anymore).
What if some of my scripts/extensions trigger a ban? Extensions like Easy Steam Gifts or Extended Steam Gifts.

Unless the extensions start joining giveaways by themselves, you're not at risk.

I hope that I will have better winning chance in the future. :) No more offline people will enter giveaways.

This is a great change and I hope it stops the autojoiners, but I'm not sure how you are detecting the script users and I hope there is a good way to detect them without false positives. I have never used a script, but I pretty much live on this site and do a few things that may look suspicious. Ever since the Labyrinth puzzles where you have to check 100 giveaways on each page to find the correct one, I started using LinkClump which allows you to right click and highlight as many links as you want and open them all at the same time in new tabs. I use this all the time when someone posts a lot of giveaway links without saying what games they are. This happens often with ESGST giveaways because they just show up as stars next to the users name and you can't see what games they are giving away, so I just open them all at the same time in new tabs and look through them since there is no other way to see what they are.
Also, I usually only have 2-4 pages of giveaways on the main list because I have over 8000 blocked, so it doesn't take long to look through all the pages. The way I enter giveaways every day is to go through each page and open each giveaway I want to enter in a new tab and leave it open. When I am ready to enter them I will use Control+Tab to quickly switch through them all and click enter on each page. I do this because it is quick and I want to read the description on every giveaway if there is one. Most giveaways don'e have a description or it is just a few words, so I often enter giveaways a a high rate, probably 2 or 3 a second.

Regarding ESGST GAs.... I just click the Black star button in the header, this way all the GAs get listed. Everthing I want to know can be seen this way, which game, the level, number of comments and entries and all that. I can then join the ones I'm interessted in. No need to click the stars next to the user names or in the comments.

I use that as well, but I either have an older version or I have not enabled a setting to show that information. I see a list of all the giveaways there, but there is no information, it just shows a list of the 5 character URL codes for each giveaway and you can click on them. I use LinkClump to highlight the entire list and open them to see what they are. It would be easier if it said what games they were for, maybe I'll update the script. Thanks for the info :)

Great if you can get it to work. Thanks for your good work.

In order to lessen the number of bots currently on the site one would have to lessen the incentive for using one (reducing point generation) and set up anti-botting checks,
along with suspensions of course, and even permanent ones.
The question ought to be how certain we can be of one's usage of such material, in regards to a possible false positive.
If we can't practically commit to saying that there would be no false positives, I feel there shouldn't be absolute punishments.
And yes, considering SGTools protected giveaways, a suspension, even if it was for a day, can still be considered kind of absolute.
In turn, if we can't have such a foolproof system so that we can give away suspensions like candy (to users who have gone out of their way to cheat the system, mind you),
I feel like Yirg's suggestion has merit, where no heavy-handed punishment is meted out, but instead an antibotting check for an extensive amount of time.
Also, I'd like to know if we have any statistics on the matter, as they may shed some light onto how many use such scripts, the distribution of offenders between levels and so on.

I don't get the limk between SGTools and suspensions. What do they have to do with each other?
Comment has been collapsed.
SGTools has a default rule, about those that have had a suspensions, not to be able to join the protected giveaways.
We don't have stats on this I believe, but a lot of people, and especially train creators use SGTools to protect their GAs.
Having a suspension therefore, could stain one's account beyond repair.
Speaking of which, I'd like to see SGTools integration in giveaway creation in SG, don't really know why there isn't any.
Does anyone know perhaps of any reason for SGTools-checks to stay separate from SG?

Errr.... no.
First, there is no way for SGTools to even know that you ever had a suspension. (I've been suspended once in the past and it never prevented me from joining any SGTools protected giveaways)
There are rules available about VAC and Community bans, but those are related to the Steam account, and have nothing to do with Steamgifts. You can also get banned from SGTools itself by their admin, but once again nothing to do with Steamgifts.

SGTools is a completely separate website operated by a completely different person.

Wow, I didn't know that. Thought a suspension here = SGTools ban. Don't know why really..
Think I'd seen a forum post of somone not being able to enter an SGTools protected train because of it or something like that.
Thanks for the clarification though :D

About the 2nd point, I wasn't sure but I pretty much thought it would be a wholly different "entity" than SG, but I was perhaps asking more about the general consensus of having the choice between using fixed rules for giveaways or not.
What I mean to say is that some of those pretty much "standard" SGTools rules are pretty neat ideas
(Multiple Wins / Not activated) for Steamgifts not to integrate the choice of using them during GA creation.
I can't see any negatives on having the option to create GAs with those filters as well (along with levels, region etc).
Is there something glaringly obvious I'm missing though, on why this hasn't still been implemented in SG?
Comment has been collapsed.
I think that cg didn't want to overcomplicate giveaway creation. More filtering options means more possibilitie for someone to screw up when creating their giveaway and more work for the support crew to fix those.
I've so many people create SGTools protected giveaways having to go back and edit the rules a few times because they made mistakes, so it could quickly become very problematic on SG where you can't edit the parameters of your giveaway once it's created.
Comment has been collapsed.
Ye, I can see how that could become a problem. Also, if it became popular, it would mean the punishment for
multiples/not activated would be more severe than it currently is. The severity of those infractions though is another
topic all by itself :)
Steam should just remove trading cards all together, that would actually lessen the number of bots.
Anyhow, sorry for the rant, and thanks for your insight on the matter :)

SPOTTED THE BOT USER!
Why is this disgusting news? It's always been against the rule and people have been asking for this feature for years. I'm just glad it's finally being put in place.

Hi SG,
I want to remind everyone that using scripts to automatically join giveaways is against the rules. To help clarify, I updated the site guidelines today:
I would like to try reducing the usage of these scripts through two approaches...
The last few weeks I've been logging and reviewing data. On average, a user with scripts enters 4x as many giveaways as a user without scripts. I believe this happens because users currently receive a high number of points, and scripts are able to use those points more efficiently. To fix this issue I want to lower point distribution to a more reasonable amount. This will allow users casually visiting the site a couple of times a day to use all of their points, and therefore reduce the need and advantage of using such scripts.
Secondly, starting October, I am going to start assigning suspensions to users that are using these scripts. I feel they do not benefit the community in any way, and I want to try to ensure SteamGifts stays a fun and social place for everyone to visit. Of course, that only happens when real people are interacting with the site.
If you have any thoughts on the topic, please leave a comment.
