Seeing the other guy's post on Life of Pi book, I realized that there are many great books out there to read. Now however, a quick search of the best books to read comes up with the ones that the critics love. After reading most of their plots on wikipedia, they tended to sound dull. What are your favorites?

I'm going to have to say the Saga series from Brian Vaughan so far. I haven't been so enthralled in books in a while. Great writing, characters, art, everything.

"American Psycho"...just kidding, was pretty boring and sick :/ but if you're interested in a sociopaths mind, I recommend this one^^

Loved "It" and "The Stand" by Stephen King (read a lot of him and those are actually the best),
Ok..perhaps not suitable for you..German Classics like Goethe, Schiller..

some good books: 1984, Daemon (Daniel Suarez),etc.. read so many, that I don't remember them atm xD

Everyone loves The Hobbit, but my favorite fantasy novel so far would be The Shadow of the Lion. It takes place in Venice for the most part. I also enjoyed Elie Wiezel's book Night, telling the story of his life in a Nazi concentration camp.
I've just started A Game of Thrones and I already love it.

My short list:
Carter Beats the Devil by Glen David Gold (unexpectedly most gripping story I've encountered)
The Forest of the Hanged Foxes by Arto Paasilinna (the book which makes you smile a lot, could be unavailable in English)
An Instance of the Fingerpost by Iain Pears (a true mystery, not for Dan Brown's fans :P)

Take out Lord of the Flies and this is a good list. I'm also a pretty big Dick fan (what?!). I've read almost all of his books/stories.

When I was a kid I loved the Harry Potter saga. Since I bought the first book, after watching the first movie, whene I was like 11 or 12, I lived the dream of living in Hogwarts (still waiting my letter) and I've grown up with those books. I have the italian and english version of all the books, it helped me to improve my english :)

I loved The lord of the rings, Storm of Steel of Ernst Jung (in German "In Stahlgewittern"), In Praise of Folly by Erasmus of Rotterdam and some history books :)
