Seeing the other guy's post on Life of Pi book, I realized that there are many great books out there to read. Now however, a quick search of the best books to read comes up with the ones that the critics love. After reading most of their plots on wikipedia, they tended to sound dull. What are your favorites?

It's the "Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy", not "To Space". But +1, everything Douglas Adams

The Eight by Katherine Neville, which is really, really great.
The Bourbon Kid series: The Book With No Name, The Eye of the Moon, The Devil's Graveyard, The Book of Death.

Michael Crichton was one of my favorite authors, too bad he passed away already. And I mentioned Prey before ;)

Even if you're not into reading all that much, most of his works transfered into movies. Just from the top of my head:

  • Jurassic Park (from his Dino Park)
  • Sphere
  • Andromeda (Strain)
  • Congo
  • Rising Sun (Nippon Connection)
  • Timeline
  • 13th Warrior
  • the Great Train Robbery
  • Emergency Room (yep, based on his works, too)

I loved a saga that i think its not that well known called "The Secrets of the Immortal Nicholas Flamel", there are 6 books they are all fun, fast and easy to read, full of adventure. The author is Michael Scott. I totally recommend it

I'm too tired to make an exhaustive list (I just arrive from a hard test) but besides some others titles mentioned before, you can select any book from Terry Pratchett

"A Long Walk" - Stephen King (as Richard Bachman) - i'm a huge fan of King and I find this book most terrifying, brutal and outrageous.
Lovecraft stuff about Cthulhu - enough said.
"Catch-22" Joseph Heller - it's classic, god dammit.
"Elantris" - Brandon Sanderson - I was just astonished by this book, maybe because I started to doubt if there can be any good fantasy book written nowadays.
"Solaris" - Stanisław Lem - hard thing to get through, but it was worth it. I also recommend any other books written by Lem. This man was amazing.
Recently i'm reading "I am legend" by Matheson and although I haven't finished it yet I find it very good. I think I will love this book when I got to the end.

World War Z is my favorite non-classic. The movie was awful and nothing like the book.

I LOVED this book. I highly recommend everyone who is interested in knights, magic, or castles to read it. This is in my top 3 favorite books of all time. Amazon allows you to take a peek inside so you should be able to read a little bit of it. clicky

William Gibson is my favourite writer! Neuromancer (my top book so far), Count Zero, Mona Lisa Overdrive (it is supposed to be serries). I recommend Haruki Murakami too!

Yes, William Gibson is the master of cyberpunk. But be aware that in his later works, like Pattern Recognition, he changed style and setting significantly. Most notably, it's not cyberpunk anymore.

I liked the Fountainhead, but I think that depends on the kind of literature you like. It's pretty long.

I think everyone should read Ayn Rand, if only to see what overly-indulgent writing and disastrous personal philosophies look like.

The Idiot, by Fyodor M. Dostoievsky. Hands Down. Better than LOTR. Haven't read the "Song of Fire and Ice" series though, heard that's pretty good.
