Do you love Civ V and own it? Don't buy Civ VI.
Do you hate Civ V and love Civ IV? Don't buy Civ VI.
If neither of those apply and you love strategy games, buy Civ VI.

oh shit that's bad news for me xD
and there I read 6 is at least better than 5, while remaining behind 4.

With city sectors in 6 the game is quite different to 5, also borders in 6 aren't flexible anymore.
But it's quite fun in multiplayer with friends.

That's what every review, critical and friend, I've seen has suggested, and it's also what I've pulled myself from gameplay videos. Fundamentally, if we assume Civ IV to be Windows 7, Civ V seems to be Windows 8, while Civ VI seems to be Windows 10 (but without, y'know, the harddrive wiping, system shutdowns, updating issues, and various other gifts Microsoft gave us with Windows 10- well, hopefully, anyway. :P)

That is to say, it still doesn't hit the clean, user-friendly, easily customizable vibes of 7/IV, but it does seem to be a more polished and less easily forgettable version of its predecessor, and with a more modernized, accessibility-oriented design.

The only criticisms I've seen consistently thrown out are that the game feels too spreadsheety/number-heavy/math-oriented, thereby coming across more like a typical grand strategy game than a typical 4x game, and discontent from those who don't like the new district system (though it's worth noting that a lot of the number-crunching appears to occur there, so it may really be part of the same criticism).

So yeah, I don't see anything to indicate it's a worse game than 5 (which is good, I found that game so dull I gave up on it near immediately and dug out a copy of IV to play it for the first time in years. >.>;) It definitely does seem to be different enough to disinterest some fans of past games, though, so it's one of those you need to buy based on careful consideration rather than brand name appeal alone.

Beyond that all too common consideration of a game not meeting preestablished expectations, I haven't come across any criticisms of note thus far. (Maybe Amano can give us some further insights?) Well, aside from it pulling even further away from IV which, admittedly, is pretty disfavorable. :P

I did not say Civ VI is worse than V. I did say, tho, that there is no need to buy VI if you love and own V.
Why?
Because to me, VI feels like an addon to V. And not a neccessary one.
Same graphics engine, culture works the same, religion works the same, tech and science are the same, trade is the same, governors are the same etc.. So those are all there.
What is new are essentially three things (if I remember V correctly, it is a long time since I played it): City Districts, Disasters and the UN.

City Districts kinda divided the community, as far as I have read. Personally, I don't like them. Reason is, you buy many new buildings within the district but you don't see them. You only always see the district. So in the end, the district just gives you stats but you don't get the feeling of building and enhancing your city. This could have been handled way better.

Disasters are nice the first two or three playthroughs but after that, you just ignore them. You learn how to deal with or avoid them and afterwards, when they happen, your only reaction to them is: Meh.

Voting on the UN council on the other hand is a nice addition and adds another strategic thing you can steer in your favoured direction. On the other hand, if you completely botch everything regarding the UN council, it is not a big deal. So it is more fluff than a deciding factor.

Opinions are subjective. Always.
Many people including me don't like one of the major new features in Civ VI: City Districts. On the other hand, there are also many people who like districts.
It depends :)

Where is the necessity to buy VI without the DLCs if you still have 100+ chievos open in V incl. the DLCs?

Courtesy of ITAD:

Civilization VI Platinum Edition
Historical low:
$4.85
-97% at Steam 10/12/2023

...did that really happen? I'm going to cry for missing it. :(

By comparison, this offer isn't even very good, even before you factor in how much of a necessity the core expansions are to Civ games. :/

Yeah, it really did happen... for ~20 hours, then they remembered to cut the bundle discount from 91% to 71%.
The Anthology was on a similarly generous 88% discount (historical low $11.50), then got changed to 74% the same day.

...what actually surprises me is that we seem to get threads every single time it's on sale, but that time nobody even bothered.

for ~20 hours

That'd help explain why I missed it. ITAD listed it as being for three days, which had me quite confused. I guess maybe because they changed the price but it was still counted as the same promotion in the backend.

...what actually surprises me is that we seem to get threads every single time it's on sale, but that time nobody even bothered.

ITAD has the Anthology for $10 on Fanatical, for historical low, and I didn't see a thread for that either? So yeah, assuming that wasn't also a bug, it does kinda seem we're regularly missing seeing the best offers for Civ VI. Or at the least, I am. :P

..and that's on top of me still being ticked with Humble doing that $6 Civ VI Platinum choice offer, but through a coupon only given to people who'd done a previous discount offer months before, for a bundle I actually bought but ended up having to pay full price for because they didn't do the promotion in question until just before the end of the month. Meaning I effectively got screwed twice. -.-;

..I guess what I'm saying is, I seem to be rather cursed when it comes to getting a good deal on Civ VI. :P
..and I might also be saying that Humble and I may or may not be in a blood feud now. >.>

But really, I'd immediately snap up the game at $5/$10 for platinum/anthology. :/

Imo you are better off waiting for Civilization VI Platinum Edition offer either in a bundle or heavy discount.
You need the DLCs for the full experience.

I'm surprised Sid Meier's Civilization®: Beyond Earth didn't get a discount.

So what's the deal with the Leader Pass being free at one point? Apparently if you owned everything up to the New Frontier Pass you got the Leader Pass for free. Is that still a thing?

I ask because I bought Civ VI Platinum before New Frontier was released. Completing the set with the bundle that includes the New Frontier and Leader Passes costs $15 (in my region), but getting the New Frontier Pass is way cheaper (and I can get a legit key for even cheaper at GamersGate.)

That and the complete the set bundle has a messed up price on purpose, it adds the single DLCs with no discount at all so it's more expensive than the passes themselves.

Your Attack 👛 -2
2025 7️⃣ sooon? +1
🙂If we are going to beat the “test of time,” we might as well play. (Time Thieves)...
But I tend to give priority to Civ4 or the one I used to play with.
